"I have Down syndrome and that is the least interesting thing about me." Madison Telvin is an actress, a model, a media personality, and an award winning influencer with three Webby awards on her shelf. But let's pause for a moment. When I was born, people with Down syndrome had a life expectancy of 20 years old. Now it's 60+. Think about that quantum leap, and how much it will continue to grow. As society expects more, we will achieve more. We will see more people with diverse abilities thriving in the workplace. We will make more accessible spaces. We will foster environments where people like Madison graduate with degrees, marry and live independent lives, build, create and lead companies, vote, serve, and shape communities. Let us not only expect more of Madison...let us expect more of OURSELVES. #expectmore

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged 1-4 years in Miami-Dade County. Imagine if there were zero drownings in Miami-Dade County! Imagine if all children in Miami-Dade County knew how to swim! Imagine if no parent in our community had to experience the loss of a child to a preventable drowning! This week, an enormous step was taken to make that dream a reality. On Tuesday, a collaborative group of Miami-Dade County’s public and private sector organizations launched the Zero Drownings Miami-Dade initiative, a large-scale swim safety program aimed at teaching four-year-old children enrolled in public and private early learning centers and Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) kindergarteners essential water safety lessons. Designed to reach 20,000 students across Greater Miami, this initiative will offer each student ten, 30-minute, group swim lessons with a maximum instructor-to-student ratio of one to six. The program also includes a water safety curriculum to teach them to be smart in and around water, and a digital water safety course for their families. Finally, the Zero Drownings Miami-Dade initiative also provides free transportation during school hours to ensure access and increases the likelihood of children completing the program. At The Miami Foundation, we seek to build a Greater Miami where everyone can thrive, and we believe that our community’s challenges can only be solved through cross-sector partnership and collective action. We are so honored and proud to be part of this coalition. Zero Drownings Miami-Dade is a collaborative effort between The Children's Trust, Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the American Red Cross - South Florida Region, United Way Miami, Edu Foundation, the Templeton Family Foundation, and The Miami Foundation.
