Governments are increasingly procuring and relying on AI tools for applications that can upend people's lives, from criminal investigations to social welfare screening. At the same time, the lack of strict procurement provisions means that AI systems often aren't properly assessed before being implemented, which can have serious consequences for those impacted by decisions made using AI. A new Issues in Science and Technology essay provides guidance to help ensure that AI vendors are transparent and thorough and that governments consider the human rights implications of new AI systems. Our recent Climate Conversations webinar explored the important roles that women play in climate science and research, as well as the barriers that inhibit their contributions. During the webinar, social scientist Kripa Jagannathan highlighted her experience collaborating with other women scientists at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said that that pandemic revealed many of the unique and often hidden struggles faced by women in science, and that having women at the table isn't enough. "Our systems really need to support us thriving and sustaining when we are in these positions. And it cannot be an illusion of power; it has to be empowering in the most real sense."
