The Cowboy Channel

About us

The Cowboy Channel is the official network of ProRodeo and the first 24-hour television network totally dedicated to western sports and the western lifestyle. Headquartered in the Fort Worth Stockyards, The Cowboy Channel features content focused on ProRodeo, bull riding, roping, reining, barrel racing, and other western sports genres, along with western fashion and music. The lineup also features a wide variety of “live” coverage from major western events showcasing the world’s toughest and most talented cowboys and cowgirls. On June 19, 2017, Patrick Gottsch, the CEO of Rural Media Group, made an announcement. He revealed that on July 1, FamilyNet would undergo a significant transformation, becoming The Cowboy Channel. This rebranding would shift the network's focus to Western sports and rodeo events, which had proven highly popular on RFD-TV. Gottsch expressed gratitude to Sony Pictures Television for their contribution to the network's success but acknowledged the intense competition in the classic television space. Networks like MeTV, Antenna TV, Cozi TV, Heroes & Icons, and various streaming options had made the landscape fiercely competitive and crowded. Therefore, the idea of a Western sports network was seen as a unique opportunity to stand out in cable and satellite lineups. The Cowboy Channel's initial programming included encore presentations of events from RFD's The American Rodeo, the Calgary Stampede, and the archives of the Professional Bull Riders. Sony's archived content was subsequently moved to its own GetTV at the beginning of 2018. In 2020, The Cowboy Channel signed a multi-year agreement with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, securing the rights to televise their major events, including the National Finals Rodeo.
