We're thrilled to announce that, following our victory at the 2024 SXSW Innovation Awards in the What the Future (WTF) category, the USDA has awarded us an SBIR grant to advance our UbiGro greenhouse technology into a new domain: glass. This venture aims to unlock the high-value potential of glass #greenhouses with our quantum dot technology. UbiGro, our agricultural-focused technology, utilizes our proprietary #quantumdots to optimize sunlight. It transforms UV and blue light into more photosynthetically efficient red light, giving plants a tailored light spectrum that boosts yield, quality, and growth. "Our SXSW-winning UbiGro Cover product is a great offering for 90% of the market, and now we are thrilled to receive new funding from the USDA to develop QD-glass for the rest," said Dr. Matthew Bergren, Chief Product Officer at UbiQD. Advanced materials company harnessing the power of light for product innovations in agriculture, energy, and security.
About us
UbiQD, Inc. is an advanced materials company powering product innovations in agriculture, clean energy, and security. Founded in 2014 by Dr. Hunter McDaniel to commercialize breakthroughs in quantum dot nanotechnology, UbiQD makes use of technology licensed from LANL, MIT, WWU, and UW and is based in Los Alamos, NM. What differentiates UbiQD from its competitors in the quantum dot industry (total 2015 industry sales of ~$300 million with 90% annual growth) is its focus on a specific class of low-hazard semiconductor QDs composed of CuInSeS and ZnSeS, which are synthesized by an extremely low-cost manufacturing process. Typically, quantum dots are composed of either cadmium selenide or indium phosphide, both of which are highly toxic and extremely expensive, which limits their application to displays. UbiQD’s goal is to enter new markets enabled by the dramatically lower costs and negligible toxicity of their materials. In a recent ranking by New Materials News, UbiQD was selected as the #7 QD company with the judges stating: “Despite its age, UbiQD has quickly established itself as one of the most interesting and innovative companies in the sector. The low price point of its low-toxicity QDs means that it is able to enter industries that have so far been off-limits.” The dry Los Alamos climate provides the perfect conditions for reproducible nanomaterial production while the close proximity to Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratory allows for beneficial collaborations with leading scientists in the area.

Light is the fundamental ingredient for life, and we're reimagining how it nurtures our plants. UbiGro Cover is our advanced luminescent greenhouse covering that improves the quality of #sunlight plants receive by converting less useful UV and blue light into the red and far-red spectrum that plants thrive on. Embedded with our proprietary #quantumdots, UbiGro Cover can boost crop yields by as high as 30%. This provides a more sustainable and cost-effective solution for growers without imposing additional energy needs. Optimizing the light environment promotes healthier plant growth and helps us meet our world's growing food demand with creative, more environmentally friendly solutions. Happy #FluorescenceFriday!

Understanding the distinctive characteristics of #QuantumDots hinges on their size. These Nobel Prize-winning #nanoparticles, typically ranging from 2 to 10 nanometers (nm) or about 10,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair, exhibit quantum confinement effects. Their size directly influences their electronic and optical properties. For instance, smaller quantum dots (~2 nm) emit light at shorter wavelengths (bluer), while larger ones (~6 nm) emit light at longer wavelengths (redder). Their precise control over light emission and absorption makes quantum dots invaluable for #ubiquitous applications ranging from agriculture to clean energy and beyond.
