About us

Two years later, in 1968, UC San Diego School of Medicine opened for business. Congratulations to our own Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences!

Proud to share we are #7 in the nation for research funding based on a new report from American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP)! Our faculty secured more than $34 million in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other organizations.   “This impressive amount of grant funding, secured by a relatively small number of faculty, demonstrates the preeminence of our pharmaceutical scientists who are each experts in their respective fields,” said Dean Brookie Best, Pharm.D., M.A.S. “Our diversity of funding sources also shows our ability to attract competitive funding and solve numerous urgent medical challenges through pharmaceutical science.”    Issued annually, the AACP report is a comprehensive list of total extramural-funded research awards received by U.S. colleges or schools of pharmacy based on public databases and direct collaboration with schools to ensure data accuracy. “Our wide variety of funded projects each target a distinct and pressing area of human health,” said Elizabeth Winzeler, Ph.D., associate dean for research and innovation at the pharmacy school. “These projects will help fight malaria, protect the health of breastfeeding infants, uncover marine-based medicines and discover new drug-like compounds.”   Read the press release ➡ bit.ly/4bRQvL3 #Pharmacy #Research #PharmacySchool #AACP #UCSDPharmacy

Steve Anderson and Jim Parks didn’t know one another until one physician, Victor Pretorius, MBChB, cardiothoracic surgeon at UC San Diego Health, unexpectedly brought them together. After dealing with different heart conditions for years, both Anderson and Parks underwent heart transplant surgery on January 3, 2024. Both of which were performed by Dr. Pretorius. One surgery in the morning, the other in the afternoon. Six months later, both men are now in the same cardiac rehab class where they met and realized the similarities in their treatment plans, forming a fortuitous bond while they go through almost the exact same care at UC San Diego Health. Both shared that they could not have gone on this journey without their partners by their side, acting as caregivers and patient advocates throughout, as well as the multidisciplinary team at UC San Diego Health for the life-saving treatment. Most importantly, they are grateful for the incredible gift provided by their organ donors. UC San Diego Health is a leader in cardiovascular care and performs the most heart transplants in San Diego. Our patient and transplant organ survival rates exceed the national average for heart transplant programs, placing us among the nation's best transplant centers by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. Thank you Dr. Su! You are bringing academic medicine to patients who are often under-served.

We congratulate H. Irene Su, M.D., professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, on being awarded a new three-year grant totaling $750,000 from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society & Lymphoma Society’s Equity in Access Research Program! 🔬 The funding will support her novel project, “Impact of state health insurance mandates on affordability and utilization of fertility preservation in adolescent and young adults with blood cancers.” Infertility after cancer can be reduced through egg, embryo, sperm and ovarian tissue freezing prior to treatment. For patients who want to preserve family building options, they often then navigate a formidable maze of tunnels and wayward obstacles to access health insurance coverage. Equitable access to these pre-cancer treatment services is an alarming health disparity due to unaffordability and lack of access. 🧬 With over 15 years in oncofertility research, policy, implementation science, and clinical care, Su’s study results aim to advance goals of the Equity in Access Research Program to close gaps and increase access to affordable care. Using the Health Care Cost Institute’s data, the project will demonstrate cost-sharing burdens on young cancer patients and the extent to which current state laws that mandate insurance coverage are impacting affordability and utilization.
