“It’s a much more dynamic system, and that requires us to really look outside the box and look at innovative solutions to meet those energy needs,” said Shana Louiselle, communications and public relations manager for Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO). “With aging infrastructure, upgrades are going to be needed to handle the shift.” Don't miss the many perspectives collected by Daniel Moore, which added color to the recent Summit on Modernizing the Power Grid at the White House and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rules that include Grid Enhancing Technologies. https://lnkd.in/gtJXRXsX

The WATT Coalition supports education and policies to expand the deployment of grid-enhancing technologies.
About us
The Working for Advanced Transmission Technologies (WATT) Coalition advocates for policy that supports wide deployment of Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs), to improve grid operations and planning. In operations, these technologies reduce congestion costs and improve economic dispatch, situational awareness and reliability. In planning, they reduce the time, cost and complexity of integrating new generation and load. WATT members include Ampacimon, LineVision, Lindsey Systems, NewGrid, Smart Wires, and WindSim Americas Inc. Learn about unlocking more value from the grid at watt-transmission.org.

Stephen Smith, President of National Grid Partners recently wrote an article in Forbes Technology Council on the pressing need for rapid electrification. “While we build out new infrastructure, we also can get more out of existing transmission lines with a raft of new innovations. According to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Energy, grid-enhancing technologies such as dynamic line rating can safely add as much as 30% capacity to existing lines. This could buy us the time to connect more load and renewable generation while we build out new capacity.” Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eHhBv8k6

Daniel Moore at Bloomberg Law writes about how state and federal regulators are increasing their focus on Grid Enhancing Technologies. He quotes Pablo Ruiz, CEO of NewGrid: “Rising demand is very much pushing the industry to be more creative to get more out of the existing grid. There are not too many options to increase grid capacity than advanced technologies like GETs, and that’s pushing the industry.” https://lnkd.in/gtJXRXsX

Before thinking about sophisticated and expensive solutions for the #EnergyTransition, the smart thing to do is to explore cost-efficient technologies that can optimize the use of the power infrastructure we already have. So I am very happy to share two initiatives that we are supporting in this regard: The first is a study to estimate the potential of #GridEnhancingTechnologies for Latin America. Interested firms who want to participate in this study can submit their EOIs and see the details here: https://lnkd.in/escFr6SN (REOI 24-002). And if you want to know more about Advanced Grid Solutions, what they are and what benefits they can provide to existing power systems, don't miss this webinar organized with Global Power System Transformation Consortium National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the RELAC initiative with top experts from the industry: ✅ Topology Optimization – Xiao Li, NewGrid ✅ Advanced Power Flow Control – Joaquin Peirano, Smart Wires Inc. ✅ Dynamic Line Rating – AJ Hall, The AES Corporation ✅ Energy Storage – Suzanne Leta, Fluence ✅ Virtual Power Plants – Kevin Brehm, RMI ✅ Advanced Flexible Transformers – Ibrahima Ndiaye, GE Research ✅ Advanced Conductoring – Emilia Chojkiewicz, University of California, Berkeley ✅ Point-to-Point HVDC – Lampros Papamgelis, ENGIE Register for the webinar here 👉 https://bit.ly/3XHi72b WATT Coalition IDB Invest Ricardo De Vecchi Galindo Julián Eduardo González Martínez Marcelino Madrigal Arturo Alarcón Global Renewables Alliance Melinda Marquis Daniella Rough Karin Wadsack

We applaud the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's action to continue advancing transmission line rating solutions with today's unanimously approved ANOPR for #DynamicLineRatings! Hilary Pearson, our VP of Policy & External Affairs and WATT Coalition board chair, shares her thoughts: "With demand spiking, extreme weather intensifying, and increasing congestion straining overall grid capacity, today’s decision by FERC to initiate a rulemaking will help to ensure that Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR) become an even more critical tool in the toolbox to achieve a common-sense solution – squeezing all the capacity that we can out of our existing grid. We appreciate FERC’s continued leadership in advancing transmission line ratings solutions and pursuing criteria for DLR to help support just and reasonable rates."

Today FERC opened a new rulemaking proceeding on Dynamic Line Ratings! Julia Selker, Executive Director of the WATT Coalition, said: “WATT is pleased FERC is working to identify where inaccurate line ratings are creating unjust and unreasonable rates and developing policy to correct that.” Transmission constraints cost customers billions of dollars every year by blocking the delivery of the lowest-cost generation. Utilities can use Dynamic Line Ratings to measure, rather than assume, line capacity. This will often increase throughput while ensuring safe system operation. https://lnkd.in/ghTDDht9

Federal Energy Regulatory Commissioner Allison Clements: Grid Innovation Champion! Through her and her team’s work on FERC Order Nos. 881, 2023 and 1920, she contributed to transformational policy for Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs). She has also highlighted the need for collaboration and work at the state and federal levels to fully unlock the value of GETs. Presenting this award, WATT Chair Hilary Pearson said: “The WATT Coalition thanks Commissioner Clements for taking the time to understand the value of GETs on the transmission grid and for consistently advocating for policy to address the structural barriers to grid modernization.” https://lnkd.in/g-KP-F43
