WhiteSpace Architects often derives inspiration from those who paved the way for Hawaii-based architecture throughout history. One of those who we are often inspired by is Vladimir Ossipoff. A mid-century modern architect, Ossipoff gained recognition for his adept utilization of airflow to maintain comfort within buildings amidst Hawaii's tropical climate utilizing extensive eaves, thoughtfully positioned apertures, and innovative ventilation systems. Here are examples of a few of our projects that utilized Ossipoff-inspired ventilation and cooling designs: 1: North Shore Residence 2: School Street Office Center 3: Hekili Streetscape Plan #ossipoff #hawaiiarchitecture #islandliving

Construction is underway for the new Girls Athletic Locker Room at Waipahu High School! Our design includes a space with locker rooms dedicated to the female athletes, showers, trainers’ facility including a large treatment room, team meeting room, laundry facilities, restrooms and ample storage. The design will create inclusive restrooms for all genders, including a gender-neutral locker room for a single individual with a shower and bathroom. #educationalarchitecture #hawaiischools #schooldesign

We're ecstatic to have sponsored the Women in Architecture luncheon on June 27th, in partnership with AIA Honolulu. The event at Mariposa was a huge success, bringing together 30 incredible architects to celebrate and champion diversity, equity, and innovation in our field. We were honored to be joined by three trailblazing leaders: Kimberly Dowdell, AIA National President, the first African American woman to hold this position. Lakisha Woods, AIA National Executive VP, the first African American woman in this role. Vicky Schneider, Chief Strategy Officer, whose strategic vision is shaping the future of architecture. Thank you to all who attended and made this event unforgettable. Here's to building a more inclusive and inspiring future together! 💪🏽♀✨ #WomenInArchitecture #AIAHonolulu #DiversityInDesign

Meet Alessandra “Ali” Olsen, Senior Architectural Designer • Assoc. AIA, D.Arch! 🎨 Best place to shop for local art: Local Markets 🍽️ My favorite restaurant: Any of the Arancinos 🐶 Where you'll find me on my day off: Spending time with my pups, family, & friends 🏋🏻♀️ My preferred way to work out: Dancing hula, walking/jogging with friends or lifting weights at home 🍣 Little-known fact about me: When I went to the Snow Festival in Hokkaido with my sister, we were featured on a local tv show and were treated to free sushi. 🌅 My favorite place to watch the sunrise or sunset: I love any sunrise or sunset, but growing up in Kailua makes me partial to watching sunrises on the beach there. 🏠 My favorite WhiteSpace Architects Project: It's hard to choose just one favorite WSA project because I truly love them all for different reasons. However, one project that stands out to me is a new home in Kailua. I'm excited to see it constructed because it was the last project I worked on with Pip. The entrance features a picturesque garden path nestled between the main house and garage, and the design beautifully embraces indoor and outdoor living.

The answer to great design is blowing in the wind 🌬️. Inspired by midcentury Hawaii architect Vladimir Ossipoff, we're paying tribute to his brilliant Sill Vent solution for Hawaii's high wind challenges. The Sill Vent, a fixed glass window with a vented sill, ingeniously incorporates an insect screen on the exterior side and a sliding panel on the interior side, offering controlled airflow while keeping out unwanted pests. This detail is a game-changer for windy sides of homes, where opening the main window isn't always practical. By allowing air to flow in a controlled manner, the Sill Vent maintains a comfortable environment while ensuring adequate ventilation—a perfect balance of form and function. A modern adaptation of this concept can be seen in our Kailua Cliff Residence project, which adapted the Sill Vent into a dual-use window seat. WhiteSpace Architects strives to adapt concepts from traditional Hawaiiana architecture into functional, contemporary designs. Slide 1 of this post shows our sill vents in use. Slides 2 and 3 are real Ossipoff sketches including sill vents. Slide 4 is our own WhiteSpace Architects sketch for the Kailua Cliff Residence sill vents. And lastly, Slide 5 shows the owners of the Kailua Cliff Residence enjoying the view. #HawaiiArchitecture #Innovation #ossipoff #architecturedetail

Undertaking a historical building project is a sensitive endeavor. At WhiteSpace Architects, we take the responsibility very seriously. With every adaptive reuse historic project, we aim to conserve resources and historic value, while prolonging a building's life with a modern approach. Our restoration of Bishop Bank was no different. We have more adaptive reuse projects for historical buildings in the works.
