About us
The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is a state agency charged with building and strengthening Wisconsin's workforce in the 21st century and beyond. The Department's primary responsibilities include providing job services, training and employment assistance to people looking for work, at the same time as it works with employers on finding the necessary workers to fill current job openings. Under the DWD umbrella, a wide variety of employment programs can be found which range from securing jobs for people with disabilities, assisting former welfare recipients as they make a transition into work, promoting employment in the state through Wisconsin Job Centers, linking youth with jobs of tomorrow, protecting and enforcing worker's rights, processing unemployment claims and ensuring workers compensation claims are paid in accordance with the law.

American Family Field is home to the Milwaukee Brewers, and the stadium stands as a monument to the many skilled workers who built it. On Sunday, we gathered to honor three of those workers – Jeffrey Wischer, William DeGrave, and Jerome Starr – members of Iron Workers Local 8 who died on the job 25 years ago during construction of the ballpark. The Big Blue crane collapse still resonates with the community today, particularly with those who experienced it firsthand, many of whom were among the hundreds in attendance at the memorial. These men, alongside the more than 5,000 workers who helped build then-Miller Park, created countless memories for a generation of stadium visitors. The memory of what happened here on July 14, 1999, will be with this community forever.

July is #DisabilityPrideMonth! This annual celebration marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is an opportunity to learn about and honor the history, achievements, and experiences of people with disabilities. Did you know? In 2021, thanks to input from the disability community, Ann Magill unveiled an updated #DisabilityPride flag featuring an accessible design. The flag's six diagonal stripes represent sensory disabilities (green), psychiatric disabilities (blue), invisible or undiagnosed disabilities (white), cognitive and intellectual disabilities (gold), and physical disabilities (red). Magill waived copyright and entered the flag into the public domain to encourage use of the symbolic design.
