New research from the BBB Wise Giving Alliance highlights a crucial issue: 73% of donors believe it is vital that charity appeals are truthful. In an era marked by widespread misinformation, building trust with donors has never been more important. The "Give.org Donor Trust Special Report" surveyed over 3,100 adults in the U.S. and Canada to understand their priorities in charity accountability. Key Findings: - Truthful Appeals: Donors are increasingly wary of misleading information. They want clarity and honesty in how charities present their appeals. - Transparent Spending: 75.9% of donors emphasize the importance of knowing how charities spend their money. Transparency in fund allocation builds donor confidence. - Protecting Donor Information: 60.7% of respondents prioritize the protection of their personal information, highlighting the need for robust data security practices. - Impact and Overhead: Donors prefer long-term results and high-quality programs over short-term gains and high volume. They also understand that overhead costs are necessary for charities - to function effectively. - AI Concerns: The use of artificial intelligence in creating appeals is met with skepticism. More than half of the respondents view AI-generated content negatively, fearing it may compromise the authenticity of the message. BLOG BUZZ Approaching a prospective donor for the first time can be intimidating, but cold calling is an effective way to gather information and start building relationships. Here are some key tips: Remember: A cold call is not for asking donations, but for getting to know the donor. Be Curious: Focus on learning about the prospective donor's mission and goals. Prepare: Have a menu of potential follow-up interactions ready. Research: Know who you are talking to and tailor your approach. Outline: Script your opening statement to ease into the conversation. Stack Calls: Prepare multiple calls to increase your chances of a conversation. Relax: Take a moment to calm your nerves before calling. Execute: Pick up the phone and remember your mission. Neutrality in Controversial Times: What Nonprofits Should Know In today’s polarized world, nonprofits face tough decisions about whether to take a stance on divisive issues. Harvard's recent policy of "institutional neutrality" highlights the complexity of this choice, especially amidst controversies and workplace divisions. Here are five key principles of neutrality to consider: Neutrality is a Stance: Declaring neutrality doesn't mean you avoid taking a position; it means you accept all answers, which can be powerful or problematic depending on the context. True Neutrality is Unsustainable: Once an issue is raised, true neutrality is lost. Leaders must recognize that even a neutral stance is a choice that will be scrutinized. Neutrality Doesn’t Shield You: Adopting a neutral position won't save you from defending it. Internal and external stakeholders will still ask tough questions. Benefits of Neutrality: It can maximize your reach and talent pool, fostering a culture of free expression and critical thinking. It might be the most inclusive option for some issues. Moral Choices: Choosing neutrality is a moral decision. It's essential to own this choice and recognize it as a meaningful act of judgment and values. In the end, neutrality can be seen as cruelty or curiosity, cowardice or courage, hubris or humility. The key is to choose wisely and embrace your stance with conviction.
