Linda Griffin’s Post

Last night, we hosted a #Mozilla Policy Talks panel in Westminster on generative AI and competition. I was joined on the panel by Alex Davies-Jones MP, Shadow Minister for Tech, Michael Birtwistle, Associate Director at the Ada Lovelace Institute, all moderated by the Financial Times's excellent Cristina Criddle. We covered a lot of ground: what really counts as open source? How can we, as an open source community, better organise and communicate to policymakers? What role should regulators have v Parliament, and how should we resource for expertise? We're in the early days of AI, and for many of these questions there aren't yet clear answers. Working together with the open source community, academia, civil society, business and government, we hope to find answers to questions that can feel insoluble. To that end, here is my wish list of four impossible things: 🎈 We need to regulate, but avoid over regulating. 🎈 We need to hold large companies accountable, but we shouldn’t stifle growth. 🎈 We need to protect open source approaches (as bedrock of wealth and job creation in the internet for the last 25 years) without creating total carve outs. 🎈 We need to align all the voluntary codes and proclamations around the world with existing and potential law.

Thank you Linda Griffin. Even overseeing government work, AI Act, DSA/DMA and similar frameworks, I still believe in the plurality of frameworks, policy approaches, multistakeholder involvement, agency and representation. Along with Unesco, WHO, Mozilla does some important work. We had some amazing sessions (3 years in row) with the Mozilla Festival, exploring AI policy for neurodiversity, disability, marginalized communities and more specific areas.
