The move toward electrifying everything from cars to heating to stovetops is expected to add further demand to an already stressed electrical grid. The founders of a collection of San Francisco startups think they can help. Voltus, WeaveGrid, SPAN and Bidirectional Energy are working on ways to provide supplemental power when and as needed or to moderate or shift power demand to later times. I spoke with each of their CEOs — Dana Guernsey, Apoorv Bhargava, Arch Rao and Angela Zhang — as well as industry experts Christopher Knittel and Nicole Staple about what the companies are working on and how their services could help the electrification push. It's no surprise the companies are based in The City. As I wrote about recently, San Francisco has become a major hub in green-tech development.

New: I took a ride in an electric school bus for this story: In an industrial corner of Oakland, wedged between a 10-lane freeway and a freight terminal, sits California’s newest source of renewable energy: a squadron of shiny yellow electric school buses. It’s the first all-electric bus fleet serving a major US school district. Starting in August, the 74 vehicles will also supply 2.1 gigawatt-hours of electricity to the Bay Area power grid, enough energy for 300 to 400 homes. The buses are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 25,000 tons annually in a city where 72% of public school students come from low-income families, who are disproportionately impacted by pollution from Oakland’s busy port, truck traffic and manufacturing facilities. Alameda County, where Oakland is located, has some of the nation’s worst air pollution, according to an American Lung Association report released this month. Free link for seven days. Here are a couple of pieces that I called out this week in our "Top Reads/Hot Takes." https://lnkd.in/eg_cHZmm In the pipeline construction business, private inspectors report safety concerns to developers, but there isn't sufficient enforcement that problems get fixed, according to an E&E News investigation. This excellent reporting exposing a "potentially deadly gap in the regulatory apparatus" is especially critical, reporter Mike Soraghan points out, because we're going to need lots more pipelines. https://lnkd.in/e4yj6bAj Salesforce's Marc Benioff and the World Economic Forum launched their goal to plant or conserve one trillion trees by 2030 at Davos in 2020. So far, the project is behind schedule, Sophie Alexander at Bloomberg reports. The number of trees pledged to the effort is less than 15% of the goal and 2.6 billion trees, less than 0.3% of what's needed, has been planted or conserved, according to admittedly imperfect records. The West Coast continues to excel when it comes to the transition towards zero-emission transportation.   The latest update from the Washington State Department of Ecology highlights that the state had the second-highest rate of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle sales in the nation, following in the footsteps behind California – and with Oregon achieving the number three spot.   By implementing a zero-emission vehicle standard and making significant investments in new EV charging infrastructure, Washington is leading the way in efforts to reduce transportation emissions and increase access to electric vehicle charging.   As we work together across the nation, we can continue to learn from the best practices of states like #Washington to achieve clean transportation and decarbonization goals by continuing to provide incentives for EV purchases, and public-private partnerships with a focus on increasing reliable charging station deployments.   https://lnkd.in/eX2Z3riV #evse #cleantransportation #evinfrastructure #evsales #charging
