I’m a SEIU Local 1000 member and work as a Child Development Consultant in the California Department of Education. I love being able to provide important services to the State of CA and I take pride in my work and my ability to communicate with partners and local educational agencies effectively and efficiently. We are concerned about return to office because: 1. our division removed cubicles and is hoteling space 2. our parking and walking is no longer safe due to increased crime and unhoused especially near the state capital 3. staff were hired and live far away from our office, and many have saved time from commuting 4. gas prices will be increasing, eating in restaurants is increasing, staff cannot afford this 5. public transit is short drivers but will have increased commuters 6. employees who require child care will be unable to obtain part time child care or will have to pay for full time care if they are commuting to the office 7. children’s mental health will be impacted as they are used to their parents being home when they arrive home 8. staff will still be on zoom meetings but in their cubicle creating too much office noise and difficulty concentrating 8. we efficiently and effectively communicate and collaborate from home 9. adding more commuters to the road does not support the environment and will put more people on the roads increasing the risk of accidents Additionally, telework is a valuable recruitment and retention tool for our agency we have seen that with the hiring of consultants and members of management from other parts of the state. Telework has increased morale and productivity and improved our work/life balance. Say No to RTO.

In Honor of #Nationalpridemonth the Nevada Division of Child & Family Services are bringing attention to the need of LGBTQIA+ foster homes and allies in Rural Nevada. Here are 3 facts on LGBTQIA Foster Youth provided by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) 1. LGBTQ+ youth are like any other youth. Everyone has a sexual orientation and gender identity. LGBTQ+ youth go through the same milestones as their cisgender peers, such as attending the first day of school, going on their first date, and earning their first paycheck. Most, if not all, youth in foster care have been affected by trauma and loss due to separation from their families; they require acceptance and understanding. 2. Their LGBTQ+ identity cannot be changed. Medical and psychological experts agree that attempting to change someone's sexual orientation or gender identity does not work and could result in higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. So-called "conversion therapy"—any method intended to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity—does not work and can be harmful to a person's health and well-being (SAMHSA, 2015). 3. You do not have to choose between your faith and supporting their LGBTQ+ identity. Many religious groups embrace LGBTQ+ youth, adults, and their families. There are more and more affirming churches and religious groups that are providing affirming spaces to LGBTQ+ youth and their families and DCFS celebrates those religious allies that are often the backbone of support to many Rural communities in our state. Data from the 2021 Nevada Youth Risk Behavior Survey reported via NevadaTomorrow.org showed that 34.6% of middle school students in Nevada felt sad or hopeless almost every day for two or more weeks in a row. This staggering statistic highlights the pressing need to prioritize mental health support for our youth. At The Children's Cabinet, we understand the importance of early intervention and support. That's why we offer suicide prevention screenings in all Washoe County Middle Schools, using the nationally recognized Signs of Suicide Model. Our dedicated staff partner with school-based teams to identify signs of depression or suicidal thoughts among students. Through education and proactive intervention, we empower young people to recognize the symptoms of depression in themselves or their friends and to seek help using the ACT technique (Acknowledge, Care, Tell). Thanks for sharing this article on how budget challenges are prevalent in nearly every district across the State due to a variety of factors. While the State needs to further address fully funding education in the next biennium budget, district administrators also need to think creatively with how to continue to serve students with fewer resources. I believe that AI in general, and some new Microsoft tools in particular, could help administrators, teachers and staff with creating efficiencies, while still focusing on students. College of Arts and Sciences historians at the University of Oregon are putting their research to work by helping communities engage with history. Under the mentorship of faculty trained in public history, students are becoming the next generation of historians who can connect with communities and share histories in accessible ways. Through courses focused on public history, students explore how history is presented to the public, diving into the decision-making that determines what is kept, preserved, and memorialized, and exploring what it means when voices are left out. Athenian Dialogue Alert - Had an amazing time facilitating an Athenian Dialogue today for the Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders. We discussed Daniel Coyle's book, The Culture Code, and had super great conversations about 1. Creating a safe environment so everyone feels comfortable working together; 2. Sharing vulnerability to show no one needs to be perfect; and 3. Establishing purpose through a common goal and a clear path to get there. These are characteristics of high performing organizations that value culture over resumes. #IIMC #AthenianDialgoue #LifeLongLearning

Prone restraint is just another way that authorities transform schools into dangerous environments, especially for Black and Brown students, and students with disabilities. These students are most likely to be restrained, suspended, expelled, or even ARRESTED in school, from the youngest to the oldest students. Education Forward Arizona is committed to fostering an economically robust state by supporting initiatives and legislation that enhance education quality. Research consistently demonstrates that improving education boosts the overall quality of life for all residents. Currently, Arizona faces significant challenges with chronic absenteeism in K-12 education and stagnation in various metrics on the Arizona Education Progress Meter. Addressing these issues is crucial to ensuring students are well-prepared for post-secondary education and the workforce.   A critical concern is the high absenteeism rate among Arizona's K-12 students, over half of whom are of Latino descent. The proposed legislation, #HCR2060, poses a threat to this demographic by potentially increasing absenteeism. Fearful parents might keep their children away from school, compromising the learning environment that should always serve as a safe place for students to learn.   Federal law is extremely clear that K-12 public schools must not inquire about a student’s immigration status, ensuring accessibility for all children, including those from migratory backgrounds, regardless of their immigration status or that of their parents. HCR 2060 lacks provisions to protect schools, potentially exposing families with undocumented members to targeting.   Education Forward Arizona, in alignment with other education leaders and organizations, opposes HCR 2060, which is set to be reviewed by the Arizona House of Representatives on June 4 after passing the Arizona Senate. We urge collective efforts to eliminate educational barriers rather than create them, strengthening Arizona’s future by removing obstacles to education.

As long as poverty persists, so will hunger. 1.1 million Californians on SSI/SSP should not have to choose between food, shelter, and medicine, yet the price of these basic needs exceeds the individual SSI grants in ALL counties. Poverty caused by insufficient SSI/SSP grants doesn’t just hurt low-income people, but it also hurts the community & costs CA money for other services. We urge the #CABudget Scott Wiener Jesse Gabriel to protect and support investment in #SSI to allow recipients to reach economic self-sufficiency & live with dignity.
