Some articles I read today about the USPS Parcel Select 25% price increase coming in July. USPS has filed a notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission on Friday to increase Parcel Select rates by an average of 25% on July 14th. USPS expects a 1.5% revenue increase and a 2% volume decline for Parcel Select next year due to this change. https://lnkd.in/dS2TNMe4 Their main objective is to get workshare consolidators - Pitney Bowes, DHL eCommerce, and OSM Worldwide - to inject volume further upstream in their network. USPS believes this will improve the utilization of their Ground Advantage service facilities https://lnkd.in/dvcVbRBw This change is not expected to affect Amazon and UPS relationships. https://lnkd.in/dDq4y2DA When consolidators lose margin, they may seek alternative last-mile providers. https://lnkd.in/d5Hbkg8r —— ** Background for those unfamiliar with the consolidator model ** When you ship a package with USPS, it typically goes through several nodes in the network to reach the final destination. Local post office => Origin Sectional Center Facility (SCF) => Origin Network Distribution Center (NDC) => Destination NDC => Destination SCF => Destination Delivery Unit (DDU) => Destination. To make this more efficient, USPS has historically partnered with companies like Pitney Bowes, DHL eCommerce, and OSM Worldwide through “workshare” programs. These partners consolidate, sort, and deliver packages directly to the DDU, receiving discounts in return. Now, USPS aims to reduce this last-mile injection, preferring to move more volume through their own network to increase the network utilization.

This is super interesting and the exact problem I've grappled with building fraud tools for payment providers. Most merchants that are interested in a PSP's fraud tool are looking for a for a 'set-it-and-forget-it' type solution with an ML model. It's hard to compete when the data quality isn't there. However collecting more data from merchants can also be sold with an acceptance rate angle to it, which seems to have more success than the fraud angle. Merchants are more inclined to use a pixel to send more data when there's a promise of converting more payments!

USPS is under the microscope this month as they are raising their rates. Let’s look at how they’ve delivered our brand's 2.5 million domestic shipments over the last quarter. Our brands shipped with primarily 3 service levels: - Parcel Select (58%) - USPS Ground Advantage (31%) - Priority Mail (11%) I analyzed the data by: - Breaking down the time in transit in business days per service level and zone - Focusing on the 80th percentile, which means 80% of shipments were delivered in X business days (80/20 rule). I chose this because I’ve observed 100+ brands using this as a benchmark. Obviously, some brands prefer a much higher standard. Before I get to the raw data (for the data geeks), I want to mention my key takeaways: - The difference between parcel select and ground advantage is 1 business day. - Priority Mail is only worth it for Zone 8 where it consistently beats out the other options by 1-2 business days. If your warehouse is on the west coast and you ship a lot to the east coast or vice versa you're probably doing a significant percentage in Zone 8. - The more expensive service levels provide a higher level of reliability as we approach the 90th percentile, meaning fewer shipments experience delays compared to the lower-cost options.
