Who should your first key hire be as a partnerships leader? Mekaela Davis - now the Chief Partner Officer of Trintech - started at Trintech as an SVP of Partnerships and shared her first hire was a Partner Ops/Analytics person. Armed with someone who could provide visibility into how and which partners were driving value for the business, her next task was connecting with the CEO and every functional leader to both explain and understand how partners could help drive strategic goals. Getting clear data, efficient ops, and internal alignment at the leadership level enabled her to further grow - and document - the impact partners were having on the business. This in turn made it possible for her to make the case for becoming a Chief Partner Officer. Without strong partner ops/analytics, it is incredibly difficult to not only prove partners' value to other stakeholders, it is also impossible to direct your team's and your partners' resources toward the highest value activities. HubSpot, Canalys, and Partnership Leaders' 2022 report on The State of Partner Ops and Programs showed mature partner ops was one of the most important factors in whether companies' were driving significant revenue from partners. I have watched the recognition of this role's importance grow over the last 5 years, but due to the combination of partner tech market being in a state of growth, a talent shortage, and the sheer complexity of partner ops, many companies still don't prioritize this role. Reading through earnings reports can be quite insightful, and I stumbled upon a line from a leading retailer that caught my attention: “Revenue was also impacted by the growth of its commission-only marketplace model.” In other words, the company is sacrificing margin on every sale, regardless of whether it’s a new or repeat customer. Interestingly, we’ve heard from brands using a closed-affiliate verification provider’s marketplace that 50-80% of the traffic is from repeat customers. These are customers that the brand has already acquired on another channel, so there's no need to pay additional commissions to reacquire them. At our company, we take a different approach. We believe that the brand should own the relationship and first-party data with the customer, not the verification provider. This approach gives brands the power to remarket and engage with customers without paying commissions on future sales. It's a win-win situation for both the brand and the customer.

Headline: CEO includes himself in layoffs/ a RIF. After an amazing 3.5 years at Dwolla, I made the difficult decision to put my role in last week's RIF as we redesigned our org chart around a strategic pivot to the recently announced "Connect" product. While the right strategic decision for the business, it was incredibly painful to see so many talented Dwollans impacted through the RIF. I've never had so much confidence and optimism in the future of Dwolla, and will consider my time there as one of the highlights of my career. To past and present Dwollans, I love you and can't thank you enough for the trust, loyalty, hard work and friendship. Y'all flipping killed it 🤘. I am a better person and leader because of each of you. I've got your back now and forever and will be cheering you on. Can't thank everybody enough for their support (clients, investors, bankers, board members, etc.), and consider myself lucky to have been part of this journey with you. I'll be heading to Costa Rica for a few weeks to 🏄‍♂️, meditate, journal and get my six- pack back, before slowly working on "what's next." No doubt there will be some board roles that I've been putting off, and looking at some cool FinTechs/SaaS/Payments companies. I feel incredibly blessed to be able to take some time, and know many (most) people don't have that luxury. To all impacted by the brutal layoffs and RIFs the last 24 months in tech, hang in there. I know the pressures and stress can feel crippling at times as you find yourself suddenly back in the market.
