As Hurricane Beryl crashes into the Texas coast, we're reminded that while the immediate impacts are dire, the long term consequences can be equally disastrous. In this piece, Michael T. Pugh and I argue that with more intense storms coming our way, we need to ensure that the most vulnerable communities - often the first hit and last to recover - are fortified for a changing climate future. In #WhatsPossible, some of the leading voices on climate and community development come together as one to show a roadmap for a cleaner, healthier, more resilient future for our frontline communities. Now more than ever, corporations, community groups, policymakers, financial institutions and climate advocates have an opportunity to combine financial resources and local expertise in ways that advance a just energy transition.

I'm proud and excited that DEPLOY/US is featured by the influential Founders Pledge as a high-impact funding opportunity to transform US climate action. ✨ DEPLOY/US builds the impact of orgs and leaders working right-of-center on #climatechange, as a foundation for #bipartisan policymaking. (And we're the only organization in the US with that mission.) Here are the five headlines for why Founders Pledge recommends DEPLOY/US: ⏩ US climate policy is incredibly important for global decarbonization. ⏩ The success or failure of US climate policy is strongly affected by partisan dynamics. ⏩ There is reason to expect this lever can be affected. (If you feel skeptical of this, read this section of their recommendation brief, linked below. It might surprise you!) ⏩ Funding for this work is very low. (Less than 1% of US climate philanthropy goes to groups mobilizing right-of-center climate work.) ⏩ Comparatively a high-leverage intervention for decarbonization. Read Founders Pledge's full research brief for their reasoning for why funders should invest in right-of-center climate action: https://lnkd.in/edqmAxNY

Can y'all help me understand why do power brokers continue to rely on ineffective approaches? Jailing issues away, encouraging fear mongering and the lack of honesty in sharing data or information. Even philanthropy, who is uniquely positioned to empower communities authentically, tend to lean on levers that, by design, have limited capacity for change. There's a growing interest in involving people with lived experience in system adjustments. I say "adjustments" because systems often don't understand accountability; they're designed to be above it. Over the past few years, I've been embedded in the San Francisco community, engaging with those impacted by policies crafted from perspectives far removed from the real issues. We frequently hear calls to clear the homeless from the streets, a move to avoid reminding the well-off of the disparities and the way wealth is currently being distributed. But where are the conversations about those who own multiple units in San Francisco without living here, establishing power while disregarding the families they displace—some of whom end up on those very sidewalks? Leaders need to be balanced in their roles. As servants there should always be consideration of how an approach causes harm to those who don't have the capacity or resources to fend for themselves. The smoke and mirrors need to stop. I recently heard from a community member that made me think. “Leaders can spend millions on campaigns, trips, and even provide safe housing for pandas, while families in SF remain unsheltered.” Involving people with lived experience has always been crucial. How can we ensure that their invaluable perspectives are genuinely integrated into the system, not just tokenized for appearances? #Communityengagement #Homelessness #humanity

Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability
How do we make a bigger impact? By supporting organizations’ success. Through the improvement of operational, programmatic, and financial capacities, nonprofit organizations can enhance their ability to manage funding, track data, build a skilled workforce, and ultimately make a greater impact on addressing climate change. Strategic Program 10: Community-Based Organization (CBO) Capacity Building Program (SP 10) was unanimously approved by Portland City Council today, Thursday, June 20. SP 10 will offer a multi-year cohort program for CBOs that includes training, technical assistance, consultation, operational funding, staff support, and more. The program equips organizations with resources and support to help them fulfill their mission and enable us to achieve ours. With 16 strategic programs and over $180 million in Community Responsive Grants in the Climate Investment Plan, we’re moving toward a more climate-resilient Portland. FSG
What does a strong partnership between funders, community organizers, collaborative practitioners, and other stakeholders look like in movement-building work? At last month’s Collective Impact Forum Action Summit, FSG CEO John Harper moderated an incredible plenary conversation with Jason Q. Purnell of James S. McDonnell Foundation and Charli Cooksey of WEPOWER. 10 years after Ferguson, they spoke on power-building, trust, and how they are partnering to sustain the movement for racial and economic justice in St. Louis. Some insights from the conversation: 💭 We need to activate the entire ecosystem in order to sustain and scale movements. 💭 Collaboration needs to be someone’s job — a well-resourced part of their job. 💭 Philanthropy alone is not enough. Philanthropy needs to be a resource to activate the power and scale of government and the private sector. Watch the full recording: https://lnkd.in/eXh6jv8T

The Foundation for Social Connection
🌟 Strategy Spotlight & Funding Opportunity 🌟 Research shows neighborhood associations can help foster social bonds and cohesion as well as build social networks among resident. In our Action Guide for Socially Connected Communities, our promising strategy catalog highlights neighborhood strategies that build upon civic engagement and the built environment to cultivate a connected community! As highlighted in our Built Environment Report, Block Parties, often organized by communities, use street spaces for social events with music, games, and meals - extending streets as a communal living room. Associations role in addressing climate change 🔍 "The reason people associate in the first place is to solve big problems." – reflections from my recent Mission: Impact podcast podcast episode with Shelly Cumbie Alcorn Alcorn and Elizabeth Weaver Engel on associations' pivotal roles in addressing climate change. Every industry, whether directly or indirectly, is affected by by climate change and the environmental shifts it is creating. In facing something as monumental as climate change, it's easy to focus on the extremes — either leaving everything to global entities like the UN or taking individual measures like installing solar panels. However, the real work for associations lies in that critical middle ground where practical, collective action can drive significant change. This is where our expertise and collaborative efforts can truly make a difference We are positioned to implement practical, scalable solutions that can influence entire industries and professions. This involves not only advocacy and education but also setting standards and leading by example in sustainability practices. How is your association or nonprofit leveraging its influence for sustainable impact?
