“Carol Shu is a fashion designer with experience working for Stewart+Brown before she decided in 2010 to return to graduate schoolin the Design Department at University of California, Davis. I was her master advisor for her MFA project, so I have extensive knowledge ofthe extraordinary talent and skills of this remarkable woman. Carol worked for two textile companies in India during the summer of 2011,and then returned to Davis to create an exceptionally creative line of contemporary garments that incorporated Indian textiles. Carol is not only a sophisticated and talented fashion designer: she also is a skilled seamstress, who sewed all of the garments for her MFA exhibition. She designed all of the garments, and they were a great hit with everyone who saw them. During her two years in graduate school, Carol also helped found a novel student-run campus store, the Aggie Reuse Store, that exclusively features post-consumer products from clothing to art supplies for students. The store is conceived as a way to creatively reuse a broad range of items that otherwise would be landfilled. Carol’s expertise in marketing, merchandising and design have been a major factor in the success of the store. Carol remains very involved in the store and helps train student volunteers to run the store: she teaches them all aspects of retail. In short, Carol accomplished four years of work in only two years, a remarkable feat for anyone. Since her graduation in 2012 Carol has worked on sustainability initiatives for the UC Davis office of sustainability. She is so highly regarded that she has been hired for a new position involving further sustainability initiatives. Carol is deeply committed to sustainability and to making a difference as a designer. Carol is incredibly hard working, super efficient and organized, and is a team player. She is wonderful to work with, and I can’t say enough about this talented designer.”

Bags Across the Globe (BAG) is a global intervention conceived and carried out by Ann Savageau from 2008 to the present. The large-scale installation addresses the disastrous unintended environmental consequences of one of the most widespread consumer products on the globe, the single use plastic shopping bag. It offers a more benign and attractive alternative: reusable cloth shopping bags designed and made by Savageau and her students from discarded fabric swatches. This piece challenges our conceptions of the useful and useless and raises our awareness of how a single consumer product has altered our environment.
This project was featured at Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design (SOFA) Chicago in 2012.
Created by Ann Savageau, artist and professor, with the assistance of Christopher Beer, artist and principal preparator at the UC Davis Design Museum, and design student Jessica Dutt. Thanks to Bob Morgan and the UC Davis Center for Lighting and Technology, whose expert advice and assistance made this project possible; and to Carol Shu and Nicole Stark for technical assistance. Also a special thanks to the Jean Albano Gallery, Chicago.
