“Chris headed a very diverse European sales team comprising of people with different cultural backgrounds and levels of professional maturity. During this period I valued highly his extraordinary gift (ausserordentliche Gabe) of smithing such teams together and motivating them day by day. Even the most experienced team members appreciated his contribution to the success of the team. Chris successfully initiated the European part of the business with global key accounts of the company in collaboration with our North American and Asian/Pacific teams. He contributed significantly to meeting our new orders annual target. Chris' ability to quickly be accepted as a competent partner (kompetenter Gesprächspartner) with people of all levels and all functions is an outstanding capability. Having Chris as a key person of our team was a great experience for all of the members as well as for myself.”

How does LiDAR work in low light?
LIDAR does not need light as it uses lasers to measure the distance to an object, typically up to several hundred feet inside. The laser signal is sent out and bounces back and the time for the return give a very accurate distance measurement. 2D LIDAR swings in a plane, usually horizontal (parallel to & a few inches above the floor). The returning signal can be used to geolocate a mobile robot on a virtual map of the warehouse and for object avoidance. Because the LIDAR sensor provides its own laser light source, no ambient lighting is needed. This is in contrast to camera vision based navigation systems, which are more adept at identifying various objects, but need light. Expensive 3D LIDAR can return a 3D cloud of distance data points.

What are the most exciting career paths for ROS developers?
I've been in the AMR (autonomous mobile robots) for supply chain. It is a dynamic space with a few competitors and a lot of startups and creativity. Most companies start with ROS and then develop more robust bits to their solutions. As Gurpreet says below, startups can be risky, but that where the action is, and where a new ROS developer can get there hands in and make an impact quickly. (I'm a fan of startups!).

In some embodiments whether items are to be automatically picked before or after the manual pick portion of an order depends on which ordering will allow for packing of the items corresponding to an order into the least number of receptacles, e.g., totes which are transported by the robotic pick carts. -
Dual Carriage Lift for Automated Goods Storage System
Issued US United States Patent Application 20180208397
A material handling system has a vertical lift two vertically aligned carriages that are independently positionable on a vertical support structure by respective drive systems. A processor subsystem selects one of the two carriages to move an article from at least one in-feed conveyor to a selected level of an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS). The processor subsystem concurrently positions the other carriage to avoid a collision.
