Part 2 of my series on understanding and addressing gaps in discovery is now up on Mind the Product! Last time, I discussed ways to find the "why" behind a solution already in progress. In this article, I look at discovery gaps you might encounter and how to address them. At Lab Zero Innovations Inc., we often had to navigate the need for speed and the need to ensure solutions are valuable and viable. To set our teams and clients up for success, we've been experimenting with a framework to determine when we need to bring back more discovery and validation and when we can press forward (with guardrails in place.) Do you find your team is quick to jump to solutions without understanding the why? Or conversely, do they get stuck in analysis paralysis and resist transitioning to delivery? I'd love to hear from you if a framework like this might help the team know when they're on the right track. Feel free to share your experiences or ask any questions you might have in the comments section below the article. #ProductDiscovery #Design #Discovery #ContinuousDiscovery #Onboarding #Risk #CustomerOpportunity #Value #BusinessOutcomes #Validation #AssumptionTesting #UserTesting #UserResearch #ProblemSolving

🚀 Exciting insights on change management tactics shared by Nat Brown! 👏 Nat beautifully articulates the challenges employees face with change management and offers invaluable strategies to navigate them effectively. As the VP of Product at ServiceChannel, where user-centricity and seamless transitions are paramount, I resonate deeply with the importance of transparent communication, user collaboration, empowerment, and continuous learning in driving successful change initiatives. Transparency lays the groundwork for trust and understanding, ensuring stakeholders comprehend the "why" behind the change. User collaboration, facilitated through feedback mechanisms like surveys and focus groups, empowers individuals and shapes the transformation journey. Empowerment and support, crucial components in mitigating change fatigue, enable users to embrace new tools confidently. Lastly, fostering a culture of continuous learning cultivates adaptability, positioning teams for sustained success amidst evolving landscapes. At ServiceChannel, we're dedicated to not only delivering cutting-edge solutions but also ensuring our clients thrive in their adoption journey. Nat's outlined tactics align seamlessly with our ethos, reinforcing the significance of a holistic approach to change management. I look forward to implementing these strategies to drive positive outcomes for our team and clients alike. #ChangeManagement #UserCentricity #Empowerment #ContinuousLearning #ServiceChannel 🌟

Routinely harnessing customer feedback is a powerful way to fuel your product team's innovation. By actively listening to your customers, you can turn insights into actionable ideas that drive product success. Here are (5) simple exercises to help your team rethink familiar problem spaces and consistently build empathy and customer connection. 1. Empathy Mapping: Empathy maps help teams understand customers' thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. By visualising customer experiences, teams can identify pain points and opportunities for innovation. 2. Journey Mapping: Create a customer journey map to visualize the steps a customer takes when interacting with your product. This exercise highlights key touchpoints and areas for improvement. 3. "How Might We" Questions: Encourage your team to reframe challenges by asking "How might we" questions. This technique opens up creative thinking and generates innovative solutions. 4. Feedback Sessions: Hold regular feedback sessions where team members share and discuss customer feedback. This practice ensures that insights are continuously integrated into the product development process. 5. Rapid Prototyping: Use rapid prototyping to quickly turn customer feedback into tangible solutions. This iterative process allows teams to test and refine ideas efficiently. By regularly engaging in these exercises, your team can build a deeper understanding of your customers. This continuous feedback loop creates empathy and strengthens the connection between your team and your customers, driving more meaningful and impactful innovations. 👋 Contact us at MUSE to learn more about leveraging customer feedback for innovation. 🚀 Our "Super Sprint" programs combine product innovation with leadership and team-building skills, offering the compounding benefits of growing your people, product and culture together. 🙌 We'd like to hear from you! /// Contact us at hello@wearemuse.io /// Visit us at www.wearemuse.io #ProductDesign #CustomerFeedback #Innovation #ProductDevelopment #DesignThinking #CustomerEmpathy #DesignSprints

UAT has been frustrating lately with my Product team. Intended user behavior is missing. Stress settles in. Will we launch and make concessions on what we want? Will we hold back and add in the missing parts? There's also frustration about 'how did this happen?'. My observation is product requirements need to be more detailed; in particular the definition of done and acceptance criteria. To help the team, I'm setting up a low-lift 4wk training program. Here's the outline: Week 1: 2-hour training session teaching the fundamentals of acceptance criteria and definition of done. It will include: - Review of ‘what acceptance criteria & definitions of done’ and why is it important - Some frameworks on how to write acceptance criteria & definitions of done. I plan to find a few great online resources (YouTube etc) to take us through this. - When in our Product Ops process do we need to add the definition of done and acceptance criteria? - Intro to ChatPRD - how we can use this AI tool to help in our writing - Short activities to reinforce some initial learning - Ex: Let’s re-write some requirements together for the work that was recently missed. Week 2-4: Each week we’ll spend 1hr together to reinforce the skill. The team will come prepared to do a group activity and share. Some examples of activities are: - Come prepared to review an example of an existing item in the roadmap. As a group, we'll discuss what changes we should make and why. - Re-write acceptance criteria for 2 items currently in progress. Come prepared to review the before and after and why you made the changes you did. - During the session, we'll review a new feature. Each person will write the acceptance criteria and share them. The focus is on demonstrating the skills used during the normal work week. This reduces the amount of additional work. The expected total time dedicated to training over the 4 weeks is ~12hrs. I'm not expecting we'll be perfect after this training. There's always more to learn. And, we'll still miss things because humans aren't perfect. I'm excited about the investment of time and we'll iterate on building the skill. It will be good for people, and good for business.

And it is so easy to do — after a cutoff, new ideas are fine, but they belong in the NEXT release, not the one committed and in dev/QA execution. Why are the folks paid the big bucks always missing the obvious? Well, usually they are paid to. Meaning they have to strive for more (“raise the bar”). HOW they raise the bar is what differentiates the great c-suite genius from the incompetent dingbat.

It still amazes me how often I get asked the question, “what is product management?” I used to give an answer, which in upon reflection, I realized was more appropriate as a response to, “what does a product manager do?” Now I tend to focus my response in the articulation of the value product management practices brings to a company seeking to grow and evolve. Before diving too deep though. I am interested in what people in my network would say. Particularly non-product people. What is product management to you?

Following up on my previous post regarding the purpose and value of product management. The product management art, when put to the most effective use, guides companies to seize upon market opportunities by turning innovative ideas into monetarily impactful outcomes within the constraints of time, technical feasibility, regulatory environment, market trends, and competition. The balancing of various data and inputs against limited time and capacity is the art. When done well a company’s technology evolves, their revenue and profitability increase, and their lifetime customer value grows. This is what I do. This is my product passion, and I look forward to all the chaotic unsolved or underserved market opportunities out their.
