Every business owner needs to hear this: Inflation isn’t your fault, don’t be the solution My hairstylist is so amazing, I flew 28 hrs to have him give me a cut rather than risk a foreign experience. While girls talk gossip, we always talk business. During the appointment he told me why he changed locations. Being a salon owner was too stressful so he returned being just a stylist. As he was complaining about the cost to stock product and the stress of moving clientele over, I could tell he was really worried about finances. And I could imagine why: He’s the most talented stylist in town, yet his prices the lowest… I asked him why he doesn’t rebrand as a premium experience and up his prices. (After all if I am willing to look like a hippie for months on end until I can get a haircut from him, certainly there’s many loyal clients who feel the same and wouldn’t mind paying more to keep him employed.) As we talked about the transition, we uncovered his sabotaging fears. The reason he’s kept his prices low is because he feels guilty that the economy is rough and he doesn’t want to add a burden to his customers (especially struggling seniors). It’s like he’s is crusading against the unfairness of inflation. It’s a noble desire, but its already run him out of business once and if he continues it’s going to run him out of his profession for good… As we worked on mindsets I helped him recognize that he gives a premium experience, but he’s only charging for a budget cut experience. I helped him see that he’s not selling a haircut, he’s selling self confidence. His true customer isn’t going to care about a price increase. And those seniors? They can find plenty of other budget options in town. Inflation isn’t his fault and taking a moral stance against it only means the world will eventually lose his amazing talent. He needs to charge his worth and stop footing the bill of macro economics. I got him so pumped up to increase his prices but when it came time to charge me $35, he felt guilty and tried to reason himself back down $25.🤦‍♂️ Seeing his hesitation, I reassured him I want to pay a premium price because it’s a reflection of my self image. He punched in the numbers but I could see this was still an uncomfortable experience and I knew this was the perfect time to utilize my charity fund to reinforce the lesson. So I left him a $200 tip with a message: “You are worth even more than this”. I left the shop before he realized what happened. A few minutes later, he sent me a text saying that this message was needed and this gesture put him in tears. We continued a conversation over text to work on messaging, positioning, objections, and discounts. I’m happy to report that I checked his website this morning and saw he increased his prices by 40%! 🙌🥳🎉 Success!!

Paul’s mother gave advice “In your 20s, try everything. In your 30s, figure out what you do best. In your 40s, make money from what you do best, and try not to do too much in your 50s.” Too many people beat themselves up because they don’t have everything 100% figured out. Let me tell you about my buddy, let's call him Mike. Mike's a go-getter, always chasing his dreams. One day, he tells me he wants to start his own business. But you know what he keeps doing? Making excuses. "I don't have enough money," he says. "I don't have the right connections," he complains. But here's the thing: excuses don't make you money. They hold you back. So I sit down with Mike, and I lay it out for him. "Listen, buddy," I say. "The most unprofitable thing you can manufacture is an excuse. It won't get you anywhere." Fast forward a few months, and Mike's taking action. He's networking, he's hustling, he's making things happen. And you know what? His business starts booming. Remember, excuses don't pay the bills. If you want success, you gotta ditch the excuses and start taking massive action. That's how you make things happen.

How would you sell a pen? The other day, in the office here in Scottsdale, Arizona, my team member Ben asked me to sell him a pen. “Well, jeez… I don’t think I’m cool enough to sell you this pen… I guess, like… I would need to understand… What kind of pen do you use now, Ben?” “It’s just a basic BIC pen from the store.” “Ahh, like… the plastic ones?” “Right—it’s one of the plastic ones.” “Ohhh… okay. What about, like… Do you have your clients authorize agreements? Like are they signing stuff with you?” “Yeah, they are.” “Ahh, I see… And do you want them to view you as a higher status, like, Oh he’s got a really nice pen… He must be successful, he must know what he’s doing, he must get his clients results..? “Or do you want them to view you like, He bought his pen from the dollar store. I wonder how good his company is..?” “Yeah, I definitely want to be seen as successful.” “I understand… and in your opinion Ben, what is going to increase the odds of your prospects seeing you as successful? Using that 39-cent plastic BIC pen? Or using this $100 silver chrome-plated pen?” “I’ve never seen an unsuccessful person using an expensive pen. So I think that chrome-plated pen would make prospects see me as more successful.” “Well Ben, if that’s how you feel, what do you feel you should do? Continue using your plastic BIC pen, or invest in this silver chrome-plated pen so prospects see you as successful?” “Definitely invest in the chrome-plated pen.” “I see. So what would you like to do next, Ben?” “How can I pay you for the pen, Jeremy?” Here’s a breakdown of how I just sold Ben that pen. First, I asked him what we call an NEPQ Situation Question. I wanted to understand if he would even benefit from investing in a new pen, so I needed to know what pen he was using and what he was using it for. Once I learned that he was using a low-quality pen with his clients, I associated his pen with his clients’ perception of him. Then I made his choice of pen make him seem like either a high-status expert who gets his clients results or just another salesperson using a cheap pen. Remember this: people don’t buy your product or service; they buy the result. And in the case of a pen, the result is how other people view him because of his pen. It’s not about the pen. —Jeremy

How about I share with you our latest system that connects with your clients” To quote Randy Jackson from the original American Idol “It’s a no from me dog” Personalized selling is all about genuinely getting to know your clients, treating each one as a unique individual with distinct needs and preferences. Take, for instance, a real estate agent who invests time in understanding more than just the budget and basic requirements of a client, also their lifestyle, family needs, and future aspirations. A comprehensive approach allows the agent to recommend homes that go beyond the basic criteria and truly resonate with the client's personal and long-term goals. 💡 Tip: Start by making a deliberate effort to discover more about your clients beyond traditional metrics. I don’t know. What do you think?     My doctor is retiring. He became my doctor when we were both young. He, a new professional in his first practice, me a go-getter building my business. I was one of his first patients.   I had gone to see him about some rash or other inconsequential thing. I showed him my arm and asked, “What do you think it is?” Then he said the magic words. “I don’t know. Let’s look it up”. He reached back for a thick medical book and in that instant he became my doctor for life.   In management you’re expected to know everything. You’re supposed to know the answer to every problem. That’s why people come to you. That’s what they pay you for. That’s also an impossible expectation because no, you can’t possibly know everything.   Pretending you do is a prescription for problems.   Whenever you can admit you don’t know, and you don’t, you’re just stating the obvious. That you don’t have the answer for everything. That you are in fact, human. Not some mythical beast with a title.   You may as well admit you don’t know because people will find you out regardless. When you admit you retain control of the issue. When you don’t you pass control to the whisperers behind your back.   You can stall of course. “I don’t know, but I’ll get back to you”. But you had better get back with the answer. Failing to do so is not just an admission of ignorance. It’s also a commitment broken. Two strikes in one.   In my long management life I came to believe my doctor had it about right. “I don’t know. What do you think?” This is the magic cure-all. Because it often happened that person asking actually did know. And transferring the solution to them creates all kinds of healthy outcomes.   You demonstrate respect for their opinion. You foster further engagement. You provide confidence for them to take the initiative. You give their contribution meaning and purpose.   And you get the problem solved.   Even if they don’t know, at least you’ve shown the kindness to ask and mitigated your own ignorance in the process.   There are few things more frightening than a doctor who doesn’t know but thinks they do. And there are few things more damaging to a business than a manager who doesn’t know but pretends they do. “I don’t know. What do you think?” solves a lot of problems before they become problems.
