My favorite thing about working at the American Cancer Society has been being a part of an organization that responds to disparities with innovation as we chart a path towards health equity! ACS is never afraid to be the first and the only. Today I’m excited to share the post below highlighting our VOICES of Black Women cohort study, for which ACS is the FIRST to conduct a cohort study focussed on the recruitment of 100,000 Black women, and the ONLY to have a study of this size focussed on the lived experience of Black women and the linkage to cancer outcomes. 🚨Everyone has a role in this: - If you are a Black woman between the ages of 25-55, please consider learning more about and enrolling in the VOICES of Black Women cohort study - If you are an employer, consider sharing this opportunity with your employee resource groups as every ERG can participate through amplification or eligible participation. (Message me for details on a lunch and learn for your networks) - If you aren’t eligible for the study, you can still help us in amplifying this message in your networks and community. Cancer impacts everyone, but it doesn’t impact everyone equally. Help the American Cancer Society find out why as we chart a path to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. #healthequity #DEI #Inclusion #BlackWomen #Diversity

Tomorrow and Tuesday, I will be back on the Hill speaking with Congressional Black Caucus members about the ways kidney disease ravages Black communities and what they can do to help improve the quality of life for their Black constituents at-risk for and living with kidney disease. Did you know: 💡 Black people are 4x more likely than white individuals to experience kidney failure and often “crash” onto dialysis by initiating this life-saving therapy emergently? Kidney disease is asymptomatic until its advanced stages. 💡 Black individuals have lower rates of doing dialysis at home? If you ride through under-resourced neighborhoods in the U.S., you’ll surely see dialysis centers on every other corner. 💡 Despite experiencing higher rates of kidney failure, Black kidney patients are less likely to be referred for transplant by their nephrologist? Kidney transplantation is the most optimal treatment for kidney failure. 💡 The Medicare End-stage Renal Disease benefit is basically universal healthcare for people with a kidney failure diagnosis but it eventually costs the government less to pay for kidney transplantation versus long-term dialysis care? This is personal to me. I, a Black woman, walked into an emergency room in 2005 to learn I was in kidney failure and needed dialysis. Fortunately, my nephrologist put me on peritoneal dialysis, a home dialysis modality, and I received a living donor kidney transplant from a courageous college friend in 2007. So, my purpose in life is to pay it forward by helping all kidney patients, but especially those who are most vulnerable, live their best lives by having access to high-quality, discriminatory-free healthcare. No theatrics, no performative narratives, just pure passion and tenacity advocating for people to live the width of their lives and not just the length of it. I hope the Hill is ready for me 🧡✊🏾 *The shared statistic is from the UK but the sentiment rings true here in the U.S. as well.

🌟 **Celebrating Juneteenth: A Day of Freedom and Reflection** 🌟 Today, we honor Juneteenth, a pivotal day in history marking the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. At The JPI Group, a woman minority-owned firm, we celebrate diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values. 🔹 **Honoring History:** We pay tribute to those who fought for freedom and justice. 🔹 **Commitment to Change:** We are dedicated to creating opportunities and advocating for equality. 🔹 **Empowering Future Leaders:** We invest in programs that support education and career development. On this Juneteenth, let's remember that true freedom and equality come from understanding, empathy, and action. Together, we can build a future where everyone thrives. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #Diversity #Inclusion #TheJPIGroup

Happy Juneteenth, Happy Pride, Happy Black Music Month, and Happy #BlackFacts Week! Sometimes the loudest voices aren’t telling the whole story. NBJC, along with amazing partners @nclrights @humanrightscampaign @taskforceaf @glsen & @familyequality, just released a groundbreaking study called “Black Facts” with research collected by @hitstrategies. #BlackFacts flips the script by centering Black voices and experiences in vivid technicolors. This research exposes the “matrix of domination,” a system designed to divide us. But guess what? Our data also highlights the power of unity and shared struggles. What happens to one of us, truly affects all of us. ✊🏾 So, let’s disrupt the white noise and embrace “white supremacy rehab” (thanks @thecicibattle!). “Black Facts” is packed with data for anyone who wants to protect Black lives, build a stronger democracy, and have real conversations. Head over to https://lnkd.in/eRURKgcy to download the study and join the movement! #CiteThisData #Data #Research #CiteYourSource #CiteYourSources #DataScience #AI #Technology #Tech #Advocacy #Action #LetsALLGetFree ✊🏾

Excited to share that the 2023 impact report for LISC's Black Economic Development Fund (BEDF) is now live. Since 2020, with generous support from our investors, BEDF has committed a majority of its capital, investing $211.9 million to fuel Black-led financial institutions, Black-led businesses, and other organizations doing business in predominantly Black communities addressing economic challenges and contributing to closing the racial wealth gap. Through initiatives like BEDF, LISC remains at the forefront of efforts to enhance capital access for entrepreneurs serving communities of color. Here's the breakdown: https://lnkd.in/epq7mrN5 LISC Strategic Investments

Continually proud to work for this organization. This initiative will have a lasting impact. "African Americans have a higher cancer burden and face greater obstacles to cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and survival. In fact, Black people have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial/ethnic group for most cancers in the U.S." - https://lnkd.in/e7BUazj2 "The VOICES of Black Women is a study led by the American Cancer Society. The focus of this study is to better understand cancer and other health conditions among Black women. Results from this study will help inform how to improve the health of Black women for generations to come." - https://lnkd.in/ePry_MT2

Black Fathers Matter Wallace & Ashley Strength Black fathers often embody remarkable strength, both physical and emotional. This strength is crucial in facing and overcoming the unique challenges and adversities that come with their role in society. It represents their resilience in the face of systemic barriers, their ability to provide and protect their families, and their steadfast presence as pillars of support within their communities. This strength is not just about enduring hardships, but also about thriving and setting powerful examples for future generations. Guidance Black fathers provide essential guidance that shapes the lives of their children and communities. Their wisdom, life experiences, and moral compass are vital in teaching values, ethics, and life skills. They play a key role in mentoring and nurturing their children, fostering a sense of identity, pride, and self-worth. This guidance helps to build strong, confident individuals who are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of the world, thus contributing to the betterment and upliftment of their families and communities.

Educational opportunity and literacy equity are facilitated, or frustrated, by broad and complicated systems of public financing. Andrew Kahrl's work, _The Black Tax: 150 Years of Theft, Exploitation, and Dispossession in America_ presents a story to be reckoned with, and some thinking about how these systems can be improved toward the goals they ought to serve. Let's continue to challenge this narrative together. It's time to prioritize well-being over unrealistic expectations everywhere. #BreakTheMyth #BlackWomenAtWork #wellbeing
