Mielle Organics’ origin story is by now the stuff of legend among Black female entrepreneurs: In the early 2010s, Chicago nurse Monique Rodriguez was frustrated with the available range of multicultural hair products. She whipped up her own concoction in the kitchen, shared it with friends, gained a loyal following and soon attracted the attention of major investors and international beauty conglomerates. But though dozens, if not hundreds of Black women have undertaken a similar journey, the number who found even a fraction of Rodriguez’s success — or even made it past the kitchen counter stage — is vanishingly small. A decade after launching her first product — a blend of scalp-stimulating peppermint and amino-acid rich almond oil — and a year since becoming one of the few Black women to achieve a lucrative exit by selling her business to Procter & Gamble in 2023 — Rodriguez remains in a rare class. Her peers include Carol's Daughter founder Lisa Price, who sold to L'Oréal in 2017, and Sundial’s Richelieu Dennis, who sold SheaMoisture and several other multicultural hair brands to Unilever in 2014. (Rodriguez and her husband Melvin remain actively involved as chief executive officer and chief operating officer of Mielle, respectively.) In 2021, Rodriguez was one of fewer than 100 Black women to have ever secured over $1 million in venture capital funding (Berkshire Partners invested a reported $100 million into Mielle that year.) Instead of opening doors, that year proved to be a high water mark for Rodriguez and her peers. After edging up only slightly in the immediate post-George Floyd era, funding for Black female founders remains less than one percent of total start-up investment each year, according to data from the nonprofit advocacy group Digital Undivided. The research underlined the urgent need for the creative industries to take action to close not just the gender pay gap, which has long topped industry headlines, but to urgently address the ethnic pay gap.

As someone who intentionally seeks out black women for any kind of medical care or treatment, it is refreshing and inspiring to see a group of such professionals. Research actually shows that many patients seek treatment from professionals who share similar backgrounds and experiences, and this is particularly important for Black men. Historically, Black men have faced significant barriers to accessing mental health care, including stigma, cultural mistrust, and a lack of representation among mental health professionals. But by encouraging Black men to seek therapy and ensuring they have access to therapists who understand their unique challenges, there is hope for more trust, communication, and better treatment outcomes overall for a group that is not often encouraged to create space for their mental health needs — ultimately leading to stronger and healthier communities. Increasing awareness and representation in the field of mental health is an essential component in breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for all individuals, especially those from marginalized communities. There are several choices you could make today as a social media manager. You could choose to assume how Black people in your audience might like to see your brand recognize #Juneteenth. You could quietly observe how other similar brands have decided to acknowledge this important annual holiday. You could take a queue from them, and hope it strikes the right chord. Or, You could ask Black communities within your organization or Black customer ERGs how they would ideally like to see the holiday recognized. How they envision your brand could do justice to such a monumental marker of freedom for people of color in American history. You could ask fellow Black employees if they’d be willing to share what Juneteenth means to them, and historically how they have observed it. How their family first told them the story of how the holiday came about. You could assume, or you could open up a conversation with the community to whom this holiday is most meaningful, and KNOW. In 2015, just a few credits shy of graduating from Spelman College, I encountered LinkedIn in Alexandria Lockett's Rhetorics of Advertising class. Shamefully, as a Comparative Women's Studies Major pursuing an entertainment career, I failed to see the value in an employment-networking platform. How do creative hires navigate the job market? I took an unconventional route. Now, after two years of entrepreneurship and countless "let's connect on LinkedIn" requests, I'm finally ready to share my journey! I’m Maura Chanz (@maurachanz everywhere), a creative producer, writer, director, and the Executive Producer and HBIC of Brilliantine Productions. Starting my career at 13 as a commercial actress, I quickly found my passion at the crossroads of storytelling and advertising. 👩🏾‍💻 Growing up on the internet, I launched my first blog, Lips Unsealed, at 14, diving into the world of digital advertising. Managing my platform felt like my own Jacobs by Marc Jacobs for Marc By Marc Jacobs era. I honed invaluable skills, including graphic design, which has been my saving grace and side hustle through many seasons. Outgrowing Lips Unsealed, I teamed up with Kofi Siriboe (yes, ladies, HIM) to launch TheBlakSheepTV on YouTube. We amassed over 10M views and thousands of subscribers, featuring guests like Skye Townsend, Jhene Aiko, and Nipsey Hussle...The Marathon Continues. Meanwhile, I continued to refine my skills behind the scenes through internships at BET, True Story Agency, and Konlive Distribution, closing out my college career as an on-campus segment producer for BET's digital series What's At Stake. Degree in hand, I founded my first creative agency, Glitter & Hustle, and returned to the spotlight as an on-air personality for Bossip on WeTV. Opportunity called and I was on the first thing smoking back to LA to learn under one of Black Hollywood's Fairy God Mothers, Mara Akil, serving as her apprentice and creative assistant at Akil Productions. This seven-year Hollywood journey catapulted me through studio lots, tentpole events, writers' rooms, and award shows, culminating in my role as Director of Creative & Content Production for Yara & Keri Shahidi's 7th Sun Productions. In this role and as a freelance creative producer, I've collaborated with Dior, Samsung, IGTV, Live Nation, and more before founding Brilliantine Productions. Back in the entrepreneurship realm, Brilliantine Productions aims to illuminate our stories through creative and physical production. Since our 2022 launch, we've partnered with Skillshare, Meta , Amazon Music, Walmart & Goldman Sachs through collaborations with HOORAE and ColorCreative. Reflecting on my journey, I once felt like my curiosities pulled me in every direction. Now, I see it as a tailored path, accumulating transferable skills along the way. I am now OFFICIALLY a founder 🥳 The PR Habitat company page is live. In founding this community, I saw a chance to fill gaps in the industry. There is a shortage of colleagues, particularly among Black men, who can be mentors, sponsors, role models, or allies. PRSSA, despite being a lighthouse for PR hopefuls, isn't common in NAIA schools like the one I went to. My goal is to help mold the PR industry's future by providing educational content and instilling early awareness about public relations as a promising career path. This is particularly crucial for high school students from underprivileged areas who may not be well-acquainted with the field. By bridging these cultural and informational gaps in early-career recruitment, I aim to diversify and enrich the field of public relations for future generations. The Hab isn't just a digital community—it's paving the way for Gen Z in PR. As for what's next? I hate being the first one. But I always find myself in this same spot The first Black woman copywriter to: -License a copywriting course to 1K colleges -Launch a flat-rate sales writing agency -Build a culturally smart AI copywriting tool I wish I wasn't the first. I wish we had more diversity in higher education. I wish we had more diversity in agency ownership. I wish we had more diversity in AI technology. But we don't. So, someone has to walk through the doors first. To set the stage. To break the barriers. To challenge the status quo. To create a new narrative. To inspire the next generation. To show them it's possible. To make a difference. To change the game. And if it has to be someone, why not me? I'm not just doing this for me. I'm doing this for us. For every brand that wants to be heard. For every brand that values diverse voices. For every brand that wants to feel AI gets them too. I'm doing this for you. So, here's to being the first. But definitely not the last.
