1 in 8. The demand for this type of support in the fight against obesity is real. The latest KFF poll is eye opening. Important for employers - as well as thier trusted employee benefits advisors - to keep an eye on this trend. This is going to continue to be “fight” and I predict some type of legal action soon testing the denial of this treatment/medication for this disease.

#pharmacists Please share qualitative and quantitative data on “how” we can help close these gaps. Across the United States, there's a dearth of family medicine doctors, pediatricians, and internists. And without significantly more primary care providers, there's simply no way for all Americans to get optimal primary care. The Health Resources and Services administration estimates a current shortage of 13,000 primary care providers. And that shortage will skyrocket to 68,000 by 2036 as the number of Americans needing care balloons and existing PCPs retire with too few trainees to fill their shoes. The Association of American Medical Colleges predicts a slightly lower shortage in 2036 — between 20,000 and 40,000 primary care physicians — only if more residency positions are funded nationwide.

I encourage all consumers to ask hard questions about the #clinics #medispas #ivinfusion clinics and #cryotherapy clinics offering compounded weight loss medications, vitamin infusions and selling supplements. My concern is your safety! Before you inject or infuse or consume medications from these clinics, ask questions and consider: - the training and experience of the provider prescribing the medication - the practice setting- is the setting a real medical facility? Do they have emergency medical supplies to manage acute issues? -if what they are doing ( ie weight loss) and what they are prescribing ( compounded medications) is part of their core business (weight loss in cryotherapy clinics??) -if they are upselling you to buy supplements or have procedures at the same time - ask them about data about what they are doing (there is no data about vitamin infusions showing benefit and there are risks) - did the prescriber take a complete medical history and do an exam before prescribing? Did they take the time to review your other meds and consider drug drug interactions? - will the provider take your calls and manage side effects from the medications they prescribe? - are they documenting the care they are providing in a medical record that you have access to? - are they sharing information with your other treating physicians? Consider if what you are paying for is quality medical care and safe!!! Be careful!! Practicing medicine and doing it well is hard and there are risks- don’t risk your health!! Good marketing does not mean good medicine. And remember- COMPOUNDED MEDICATIONS ARE NOT GENERIC MEDICATIONS! When it comes to the weight loss medications I know they are being falsely promoted by local centers as generic today! Don’t be fooled. Ms.Medicine

Blood cancer patients sometimes face tough odds. But there’s something that can help change those odds: clinical trials. Clinical trials can sound scary: they study whether new treatments work for patients and specific types of cancer. But trials put safety first, and they can be life-changing for patients with tough-to-treat cancers—like Valerie (see the link). As a #lifetimepatient and #patientadvocate I've had a complex medical team since I was a child. We've had many challenges to keep me alive to where I am today. Surviving #EndStageLiverDisease and #HepatitisC with the help of #treatment which had significant and unlawful access restrictions which have since been mostly dismantled. Being a survivor here, also means my life relies on my anti-rejection #medications. Without these pills, I am a short walk from death, as my immune system would attack my liver. I understand quite well the reality that without access to my treatment, and to the meds that keep me alive, I would be dead. So I was elated to see the news this morning regarding #Mifepristone and #SCOTUS. And my feelings in this case have little to do with what the meds functions are. Because the idea that a doctor can sue, based on belief, rather than evidence regarding someone's health in what can be a life or death situation is not healthcare. Imagine a #doctor suing because a patient was allowed access to Hepatitis C treatment because that doctor felt it was right to do so because they believe the patient uses drugs to manage pain. Or access to #PREP for #HIV because the doc is homophobic, and is totally cool with #epidemics. What happens, should a doctor believe that people shouldn't be artificially kept alive, like myself? That #Transplants are unnatural, that ventilators, #Dialysis or other #MedDevices are not within their doctrine. This isn't a slippery slope, it is a minefield of unknown proportion. The potential for states to suddenly put access restrictions on medications with such a simple avenue could have sewn chaos among our already challenging #healthcare system. When I was dying, with a MELD of 20 of #HepC, I would have been ineligible for treatment in 2014 on Medicaid/MediCal, because I didn't fit their unlawful eligibility requirements. (unlawful because CMS had issued specific orders to provide care regardless of liver heath or prior treatment.) It has taken a decade to fix these #access #restrictions, and some states still get a failing grade, I'm looking at you Iowa and Arkansas. (if you'd like to learn more check out https://stateofhepc.org/ ) This one case, could have upended that entirely, and put millions of lives at risk. I applaud this unanimous decision by an otherwise divisive court. Now, like many others in #LifeSciences and patients and Patient Advocates, we await the next SCOTUS case regarding the future of Chevron Deference.

Digital biomarkers and digital therapeutics are exponentially scaleable. They are the future of Medicine. As we learn more and more about the pathways leading toward disease, finding preventative applications will always require surveillance tests that provide a trigger for actionable responses. We now screen with routine labs (such as HbA1c for diabetes, or HDL/LDL for metabolic syndrome) and office visits. But these typically require physical blood and physical labs, which limits scalability. There's so much data available from so many wearable and lifestyle sensors, and such good generative and predictive AI, that digital biomarkers can now begin to move to the forefront. Preventative medicine can start to rely on emerging digital biomarkers, followed by digital prescriptions where the efficacy can be as high as traditional pharmaceuticals. Because of their freedom from physical constraints, these approaches can offer true democratization of health care at bearable costs.

~50% of American doctors believe that Black patients feel less pain. If you are a white soldier you will receive better pain protocols and medication than a Black soldier. Have any of your children ever had appendicitis? If you are white, they probably medicated them properly. If you are Black, they let your child suffer and feel more pain because they do not believe they need as much medicine. Why? Because these doctors, with medical degrees based in science, have a belief that Black people's nerve endings do not reach the surface of their skin making them able to withstand more pain. We can talk about health equity being driven by poverty for another decade but it's a fallacy. ALL low income patients struggle, so why are we the "poor" patients? Studies show that the wealthier Black patients are, the MORE they question the doctor and approaches to treatment. The reason for health inequity is baked into the foundation of the country. It is out and out racism...which does cause the poverty issues, but is a symptom, not the cause of the problem. We talk about treating disease and making people's health better, but until this country collectively addresses the racism, we will remain where we are. And, pharma cannot solve this. With underrepresentation from LatinX and Black communities, it is impossible for the industry to appropriately address the issue. If you work in pharma, check the racial demographics of your company and your neighborhood (especially if you live around any of the pharma corridors). The companies and communities are devoid of LatinX and Black people. It is comical that an industry comprised of people who have made a concerted effort (it is concerted in the NY area, which has 2-3 times the representation from these communities as our representation in the US population), think they can solve this issue. If feels like you want to exclude us. The language is too soft and the approach to slow because we are still centering whiteness and white feelings in the ways we choose to address it. Y'all need to get uncomfortable to solve it...the rest of us are always uncomfortable and sometimes you need a lived experience to drive change. Til I am blue in the face - 2042, US will be majority LatinX and Black. It takes 20 years for a tree to bare fruit. We have 17 and 1/2.
