If it’s Sunday morning, it’s coffee and Holly Scott’s #medtech roundup. This one is on M&A. Biggest news for the vision care space, where I live, is Alcon’s surgical acquisition. But what I found most interesting was in the article about M&A trends being the lowest level in many, many years. Which begs the question - what do corporate development folks look for in acquisition targets? The analysts at Needham were cited in the article. “We think the primary things are high growth and large market opportunities,” the analysts said. “Secondarily, we think that they also prefer companies with high gross margins, differentiated products and barriers to entry (patents, regulatory approvals, etc).” In people speak: ✅ fast growing ✅ highly profitable ✅ a regulatory or IP advantage ✅ in the right size market And with the price tag for Johnson & Johnson’s latest #medtech acquisition, it doesn’t need to be a small, bootstrap startup. "What's hot, what markets/technologies should I be watching?" is a question I hear daily. And yes, I am often quick to respond with the obvious: -> EP/PFA - All the rage.. -> Neuro - Brain is the new heart. It's the last true frontier in Med Tech. Specifically stroke, growing 20+% CAGR. -> AI powered SaMD - Clinical AND economic value props are a must. And who's gonna pay for it??? -> Wearables/Biometric Tech - Diagnostic & Therapeutic, and specifically closed loop systems are winning here. -> Robotics - SRS was bananas two weeks ago! Movement towards specialization has caused this category to explode. But a couple not so cliche' opportunities exist: -> Smart Implants - See Canary Medical Inc.. 5-7 years from now we will gasp at the idea sewing up a patient w/ an implant that can't talk to the outside world. Thank you Bill Hunter for your leadership in this market! -> Ophthalmics - Yes...the often forgotten city of Med Tech. There is something very special going on in this market at present...IYKYK. (see attached..congrats BELKIN Vision & Alcon!) At the urging of a very trusted colleague, Bernie Haffey I recently attended the Octane OC Ophthalmic Forum. A few interesting takeaways: -> Although the overall percentage of total Med Tech VC investment in Ophthalmics is relatively small (roughly 3%), capital is actively being deployed across the board: cataract, refractive, glaucoma, & retinal disorders. -> The bio-tech side of Ophthalmics is red hot...some of the coolest innovation in healthcare is occurring in this space. -> The economics of healthcare make more sense in Ophthalmics than perhaps any other at present. This is fertile ground for thriving innovation. Fun facts to keep in mind as you are building your career. There will soon be a lot of frustrated people in this world. At least when it comes to vision. Millennials are now entering their 40s. Add this group to Baby Boomers and Generation X’ers, and you have >200 million people with presbyopia.....just in the USA alone. When surveyed, presbyopic-aged patients responded that their quality of life is more affected by the loss of near vision (37%) than by arthritis (21%), high blood pressure (17%), hearing loss (16%), dry eyes (5%), or high cholesterol (4%). So, there will soon be A LOT of frustrated people in this world. “3 Peats” are rare “4 Peats” are unheard of… Yet Bill Hunter and his incredibly talented team at Canary Medical Inc. have done just that. The news below related to their spinal fusion technology makes four straight (knee, hip, shoulder and now spine) products which have been granted “Breakthrough Designation” by the FDA. Bill was quoted in the presser as saying that it was an “unparalleled accomplishment in the industry”. That’s putting it mildly. This feat is beyond remarkable. Most great companies are fortunate to have one such pelt for the wall. Much less four! The Digital Health market is very challenging at present. Funding is scarce. So are proven value propositions. However, Canary Medical Inc. serves as a shining example of what is possible in this market when stakeholder interests are strategically aligned around the patient. Something tells me (perhaps a little birdie???) that this won’t be the last we hear from Canary Medical Inc. either. The potential applications for their data driven solutions are endless. THIS is the future of medicine. 👏

I'm proud of the work by our amazing team and innovative clients at Validic that led to being recognized by the 2024 MedTech Breakthrough Awards! Last week at #NYValves, late-breaking data demonstrated our continued commitment to evidence generation and momentum for the Evolut TAVR therapy.   In Medtronic’s SMART Trial, the clearest predictor of valve performance was valve type – patients treated with a balloon-expandable valve had 8x the odds of developing BVD within the first 12 months, when adjusted for annulus area and body surface area - emphasizing the importance of valve selection when determining the best treatment for each patient.   Medtronic’s expanded 5-year BVD analysis confirmed that the CoreValve/Evolut platform is the first and only TAVR platform to demonstrate a performance and durability benefit over surgery at 5 years in RCTs. This analysis including >5,000 patients is the first to show that development of BVD is associated with an increased risk of death and hospitalization. It is a priority for our heart teams to lower the risk of BVD for patients after aortic valve replacement.   Valve performance is critical, regardless of procedure or platform.
