A virtual water network of the Roman world
Hydrology and Earth System Sciences
The Romans were perhaps the most impressive exponents of water resource management in preindustrial times with irrigation and virtual water trade facilitating unprecedented urbanization and socioeconomic stability for hundreds of years in a region of highly variable climate. To understand Roman water resource management in response to urbanization and climate variability, a Virtual Water Network of the Roman World was developed. Using this network we find that irrigation and virtual water trade…
Using this network we find that irrigation and virtual water trade increased Roman resilience to interannual climate variability. However, urbanization arising from virtual water trade likely pushed the Empire closer to the boundary of its water resources, led to an increase in import costs, and eroded its resilience to climate variability in the long term. In addition to improving our understanding of Roman water resource management, our cost–distance-based analysis illuminates how increases in import costs arising from climatic and population pressures are likely to be distributed in the future global virtual water network.

D3.js in Action
Manning Publications
A deep exploration of how to use d3.js for creating charts, network visualization, maps, DOM interactivity and reusable components. This includes a whole chapter devoted to network visualization and another whole chapter devoted to geospatial information visualization (or web mapping, but you can do so much more than traditional web mapping with D3) as well as chapters about creating your own layouts and using the most popular and some of the most complicated layouts available with d3.js.

Çatalhöyük Living Archive Network Studies
This project consists of three separate sub-projects as well as an accompanying paper. Two of the sub-projects are interactive network visualizations: one is focused on the social network of archaeologists over a 20 year period at the Çatalhöyük dig. The second looks at the connection between documents based on topic signature from LDA topic modeling. Along with these network visualizations is a visualization of the topics from that topic model using word clouds and spark lines. All the…
