On Monday, CMS issued the final rule for the Minimum Staffing Standards for Long-Term Care Facilities and Medicaid Institutional Payment Transparency Reporting. Following months of debate, the rule was informed by feedback from over 46,000 public comments about the proposal. The final rule requires defining minimum nurse staffing standards and the 24/7 RN requirement, which is a ‘one-size-fits-all' approach that will make the staffing shortage even more challenging. Specifically, for facilities in rural communities, it will become nearly impossible to meet the new standards. Technology will become even more important to #LTC facilities to help providers collaborate, communicate, and coordinate across the care continuum. UnitedHealthcare is anticipating a potential disruption in its #Medicaid business as millions lose coverage after the COVID-19 public health emergency ends. Investor concerns about Medicaid disenrollment caused a drop in UnitedHealth's stock price, impacting other major insurers as well. Andrew Witty, UnitedHealth CEO, acknowledged the "prolonged redetermination cycle" in Medicaid and the challenge of maintaining "perfect synchrony" between utilization and rates. UnitedHealth assured investors that recent cyberattacks won't impact their upcoming Medicaid program bids. Despite the Medicaid challenges, UnitedHealth outlined its investment strategy, highlighting areas like value-based care, pharmacy benefits management, and technology.
