The insurance industry in Illinois has been exceptionally strong for decades. Insurers have been attracted to Illinois for a wide range of reasons. A healthy and stable marketplace are the driving factors that draw insurers to the state. Legislation that will destabilize the marketplace and drive-up costs for consumers is not the answer. HB 4611 will have an adverse effect on senior citizens as the average senior will see an increase in their automobile rates by $303. Illinois consumers have benefited significantly from auto insurance rates in Illinois, as Illinois is ranked 31st in affordability while being the 7th largest state. Auto insurance rates in Illinois are 23% lower than the national average.  The best and most fair way to price policies is to use a wide variety of actuarially sound and predictive driving and non-driving rating variables. This leads to the most accurate pricing and assures that no single rating variable has a disproportionate impact on an individual’s premium. When insurers can accurately and responsibly underwrite and price policies, consumers benefit with lower rates overall, more choices, and greater market and price stability, which we have seen in Illinois for years. We urge you to proactively contact your local legislators to Vote NO on HB 4611 and any legislation restricting the use of actuarially sound underwriting practices.

How I overestimated a luxury hail damaged vehicle by over $2000 by making one small mistake. I was deployed to St. Louis Missouri working a catastrophic drive in for a paintless dent repair company. We were handling 3 different insurance carrier claims. I was newer to catastrophic hail, this was my third hail storm, but I'd been writing auto damage appraisals for 5 years. I was confident in seeing and counting the hail dents on the panels. This particular vehicle had a lot of chrome moldings on it and due to the way the hail had fallen all of those moldings were damaged. I was shocked as I wrote my estimate that the moldings were over $250 each. Between all the moldings it was over $2000 in moldings. Along with the hail damaged metal panels the estimate was a little over $4000, half of it moldings. I explained the estimate to the owner and walked over to one of the veteran adjusters on the catastrophic line. "Wow those moldings are expensive and every single one of them was damaged." He quickly got up from his seat and walked down the vehicle as the owner pulled away. He sat down next to me and smiled a cheesy, knowing smile and said, "Those went hail damaged moldings. Those were were the clips of the molding snapped into the door." I about threw up. I had overpaid the insured by over $2000. Everything worked out, I didn't get fired and all was fine, but I learned a valuable lesson about hail damage. If something seems weird, inconsistent, it's OK to ask someone for a second opinion. Stubbornly high auto insurance inflation grabbed headlines last week but homeowners insurance costs also remain stuck at higher levels than overall inflation, S&P Global Market Intelligence said in a new report. Higher costs for materials and labor to repair damaged homes, as well as a record number of weather events causing more than $1 billion in damage last year are among the reasons driving those higher rates, Karen Collins, vice president for property and environment for the American Property Casualty Insurance Association, told S&P Global Market Intelligence. The price of wood is a good example. The price for 1,000 board-feet of lumber just before the pandemic was $264. A year later it had skyrocketed to $1,686, the report noted. Prices have since fallen dramatically to just shy of $500 but that's still nearly double what it was pre-pandemic, and that leads to higher costs for homeowners carriers, which they are now trying to pass on to customers. Labor shortages are also driving up the costs of reconstruction, the S&P Global Market Intelligence report said.
