As of 2023, students of color and indigenous students made up about 38% of Minnesota’s K-12 population, but teachers of color and indigenous teachers made up only about 6% of the total workforce. Because of these gaps, EdAllies convened a Community Action Team (CAT) cohort in 2023 to examine the barriers that discourage and prevent teachers of color from entering the workforce. The report generated by that team is available now! Read about the barriers our CAT cohort members experienced firsthand and the proposed solutions to improve teacher pathways for people of color. BLOG: Research has long highlighted the profound inequities in public education on students based on their identities and demographics. Four years ago, a public outcry emerged, advocating for addressing systemic racism and inequities. However, recent years have witnessed a growing backlash against implementing changes that could potentially improve public education. What does DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) look like in K-12 schools today? It’s about more than just policies—it’s about ensuring every student feels they belong. This involves creating inclusive environments and providing equitable access to resources. A recent Pew Research Center survey found that a quarter of U.S. public K-12 teachers believe AI tools, such as ChatGPT, cause more harm than good in education. About a third see an equal mix of benefits and harms, while only 6% believe AI tools are mostly beneficial. High school teachers are more critical than their elementary and middle school counterparts. The National Early Care and Education Workforce Center has released a new tool to assist higher education institutions in assessing their readiness and capacity to participate in programs that aim to create a pipeline of skilled, diverse early educators from within their local communities. This tool builds upon the center’s new brief, “Higher Education as an Essential Partner,” and provides a framework for reflection and discussion for faculty and leadership at institutions of higher education.
