Recently, I spearheaded a successful PR campaign in Peachtree City to inform residents about a major road project. Our efforts resulted in building trust and transparency through earned media. Here's what we achieved: Community Engagement: Partnered with GDOT for a well-attended town hall meeting (nearly 250 RSVPs!) and livestreamed the event for broader reach. Proactive Communication: Encouraged public participation by soliciting questions in advance (over 3 dozen submitted!). Strategic Media Outreach: Secured impactful TV coverage (3 days on WSB, Fox 5, & Atlanta News First). I first encountered the term "earned media" as a 20-year-old volunteering on a political campaign. As many have said before, earned media is exactly that – you have to earn it. It involves pitching a story to journalists and demonstrating its newsworthiness. You then assist them in acquiring the information they require to write their piece on deadline. I'm a fan of earned media because it encourages a mutually beneficial relationship between organizations seeking to share their message and journalists seeking stories. https://lnkd.in/ez7aSTq8

Heard some great thoughts on preparing a social media communications plan BEFORE a crisis occurs!

Unlike many leaders in the public relations industry, I never studied PR in school or worked at a major firm. Instead, I cut my media teeth in journalism. It was while writing for newspapers and magazines in the mid 2000s – receiving hundreds of PR pitches a day – that I developed a sense of what worked and what didn’t in media relations. (There was a lot that didn’t.) Occasionally I’d tap into this knowledge while doing a little PR as a side gig, usually at the request of a business or artist who had never worked with someone in PR. Eventually those side gigs snowballed into the business that became Theirsay. As I built the firm, being an outsider to the industry was an advantage. Doing things differently helped us cut through the noise and land meaningful coverage for our clients. Our proposals didn’t look like proposals from other firms. We didn’t pay attention to competitors or the PR industry at all. We just focused on delivering value to both our clients and the press. Clients who had bad experiences with PR previously appreciated our fresh approach. As we grew and the caliber of our clients increased, our approach normalized a little. We adopted the tech tools every firm uses. We started doing more traditional press releases, while also continuing to place stories other firms might not think to pitch. I started to feel less like an outsider, but definitely not like an insider. Things seem to have come full circle now. The camping industry report and attendant PR campaign we executed for The Dyrt was recognized at the national level with an Anvil Award from Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). It was one of the top three data-based PR campaigns in the U.S. last year. So I guess this little firm is officially not an outsider anymore. But our philosophy of bringing forward great stories that support the public good of journalism while also driving business objectives for our clients has never changed and never will. The list of other Anvil honorees offers a much more encouraging picture of the PR industry than looking at my inbox in 2007. I see other examples of outsider thinking that are transforming this industry for the better. It turns out PR has more to offer than I used to think it did and there is room at the table for outsiders too.

📰 Media relations is more than just sending press releases 📰 I spend a lot of time talking to journalists so I can understand what issues they want to report on and how I can connect that to what clients want to talk about. Our Wes Streeting event was just one of the ways MHP Group tries to foster this mutually beneficial relationship. We brought together 65 of the UK’s top health and science journalists and 65 of the biggest brands in healthcare so both could hear from (potentially) the most influential man in the national healthcare conversation. The journalists got some great stories out it – more than 10 bits of coverage including pieces in The Independent, The Telegraph, and The Guardian – and our clients could understand what the media are interested in writing about. Using timely storytelling to help businesses engage in broader cultural commentary is why you hire a PR team. Taking the time to meet and understand the people to whom you are pitching is a foundational building block to securing opportunities to tell bigger stories about your brand. And that is ultimately what all good communications is about. #mediarelations #pr #communications

Brands considering neutrality with political issues should ask themselves four questions: ✅ Does addressing the issue align with our company strategy? ✅ Can we meaningfully address the issue and its outcomes? ✅ Will our customers and stakeholders want to hear from us on this issue? ✅ Will our employees want to hear from us on this issue? If the answer is “yes” to all four questions, you are in a good position to take a “leader” approach to industry commentary regarding the issue. Leaders communicate before anyone else because people want to hear from you on the issues at hand. There are other approaches you can take, like follower or listener, when you don't have "yes" across the board. Check out the roundtable I participated in with Traci Koller Mazurek, Paige Buescher and Abby O'Connor on navigating marketing during an election year. 🙋‍♀️ And ask me more about how to manage and communicate around political and social issues as a brand. Join Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) for this informative webinar on bipolar disorder, a complex disease that varies notably in different patients, clinically, cognitively, and in terms of brain function. The reliance on traditional disease classifications (e.g., DSM categorical diagnoses) has yielded an incomplete understanding of the illness. To overcome this Dr. Burdick has applied empirical approaches to classify individuals along neurobiologically relevant dimensions into more homogenous subgroups. These novel subtypes can then be further characterized on the basis of behavioral and biological markers to identify modifiable risk factors that contribute to poor outcomes in people with BD. It is her labs hope that this approach will make possible a more personalized approach to treatment.
