Congratulations to Adianne Alamban and Muneeza Ahmad for their publication in "Nanomaterials" entitled "2D Ruddlesden–Popper Perovskites with Polymer Additive as Stable and Transparent Optoelectronic Materials for Building-Integrated Applications"! This work benefitted from funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and shared facilities at ASU, specifically the Eyring Materials Center and the Advanced Electronics and Photonics Core Facility. In this article, they demonstrate how to design solution-processed light absorbers with semitransparency for integration into the built environment. The use of 2-dimensional (2D) perovskite materials combined with a polymeric additive enabled an improved combination of transparency, optoelectronic performance, and operational stability under accelerated stress testing! New Article Alert: “High Voltage Electrolyte Design Mediated by Advanced Solvation Chemistry Toward High Energy Density and Fast Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries” @Advanced Energy Materials. https://lnkd.in/gfSMjiwC Electrolyte is critical for transporting lithium-ion (Li+) in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, there is no universally applicable principle for designing an optimal electrolyte. In most cases, the design process relies on empirical experiences and is often treated as highly confidential proprietary information. In the article, a solvation structure-related model for the quantitative design of electrolytes is introduced, focusing on the principles of coordination chemistry. As a paradigmatic example, a high-voltage electrolyte (i.e., 4.5 V vs anode) aimed at achieving a high energy density and fast charging LIB, which is specifically composed of an emerging, well-constructed hybrid hard carbon-silicon/carbon-based anode, and lithium cobalt oxide cathode, is developed. Not only the functions of each electrolyte component at the molecular scale within the Li+ solvation structure are analyzed but also an interfacial model is introduced to elucidate their relationship with the battery performance. This study represents a pioneering effort in developing a methodology to guide electrolyte design, in which the mutual effects of the Li+ de-solvation process and solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the electrode surface are explored concurrently to understand the root cause of superior performance. The innovative approach presented in the paper, establishes a new paradigm in electrolyte design, providing valuable insights at the molecular level. 【Polarization‐Induced Mechanically Socketed Ultra‐Stretchable and Breathable Textile‐Based Nanogenerator and Pressure Sensor】 Advanced Functional Materials ( IF 19.0 ) Pub Date : 2024-05-23 , DOI: 10.1002/adfm.202401593 Textile-based wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as viable power sources for wearable electronics. However, it is still a daunting challenge to realize a high-performing textile-based nanogenerator without compromising its intrinsic textile-like properties, such as stretchability, breathability, and conformability. The above challenge is addressed by fabricating a record high-performing wearable, breathable and stretchable nanogenerator based on polarization-induced ultra-stretchable EVA/Nylon-11 micro/nano-fibers (1250%) as the triboelectric positive layer and polarization-induced ultra-stretchable EVA/PVDF/BA2CsAgBiBr7 micro/nano-fibers (1480%) as the triboelectric negative layer. The excellent stretchability, breathability (1.15 Kgm−2d−1) and high energy-harvesting performance (650 V, 19.5 µAcm−2) are attributed to the mechanically-socketed structure of the aligned stretchable EVA microfibers with the polarized nanofibers, thus providing a universal framework to fabricate stretchable piezoelectric fibers. Compositional engineering and polarization-induced surface charges coupled with triboelectric-induced surface charges enabled enhanced performance compared to other wearable stretchable textile-based nanogenerators. Additionally, it is utilized as a stretchable self-powered pressure sensor with an ultra-wide pressure sensing range (0.05–500 kPa) and high sensitivity (2.5 VkPa−1) even under deformations. To the best of the knowledge, PI-STENG stands out amongst various stretchable self-powered pressure sensors in terms of pressure sensing range and stretchability. Excited to share a new publication led by Doo Hyun Chung and Edward Graham, in collaboration with Landon Schofield, Prof. Benjamin Paren and Prof. Yang Shao-Horn, on the design space for cost effective hydrogen production via PEM electrolyzers. The paper uses a physics-based PEM electrolyzer model coupled with design and scheduling economic optimization model to explore the drivers of low-cost electrolytic H2. Highlights include: - Dynamic operation reduces LCOH vs. static operation, with increasing maximum current density increasing cost savings, particularly in future renewables dominant grid scenarios - Differential pressure operation upto 30 bar H2 becomes more cost-effective under future grid and capex scenarios - Achieving $1/kg remains a challenging target for available capex projections and would require further reductions in capex and electricity supply - Grid-electricity based hydrogen on its own will not be eligible for 45V without additional measures either at the grid level or producer-level https://lnkd.in/ec29vHSP

An article by Dr. Hyunsoo Kim, assistant professor of physics, has been featured in a commentary in the prestigious Nature Physics journal. https://lnkd.in/dDgArzND "Now, Hyunsoo Kim and colleagues have demonstrated superconductivity below 5.4 K in a lab-grown sample of Rh17S15 (pictured), which is also found in nature as the mineral miassite (H. Kim et al. Commun. Mater. 5,17; 2024). Interestingly, the superconducting properties of this compound are quite different from those seen in most of the known superconductors."

For this hot #FreepaperFriday of course I'm going to try and work in something about heating or cooling. From Purdue University School of Materials Engineering Prof. Alejandro Strachan and his student Saswat Mishra (who, in a bit of cross promotion will be doing his PhD defense on July 2, check the Purdue MSE events webpage if you want to watch his defense online) have recently looked at how solids nucleate when you cool a multi-principal component alloy. Nucleation when you have 5 elements in a liquid in equal parts; do they start with a solid that is all 5 elements or do fewer elements start the process? Look at the entire article for free below, but spoiler alert, in CoCrCuFeNi it's a Fe-Co rich spot that starts the solidification process. https://lnkd.in/gKJN45Nc

Sharing the link of my recent work- Title: Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis and thermal mapping of different cross-sectional cathode channels in open-cathode polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell stack. Link: https://lnkd.in/gmwqxV45 The key highlights of the research work are: 1. Understanding the fundamental mechanism for open cathode PEMFC 2. detailed parametric optimization utilizing EIS method 3. A hybrid EIS-AI algorithm for fault detection with an RMSE value of 0.98 I hope this work will motivate peers to come up with new ideas. In the future, I plan to enhance this work with more advanced and accurate methods that can be applied to real-life scenarios.

【Self-Powered Terahertz Modulators Based on Metamaterials, Liquid Crystals, and Triboelectric Nanogenerators】 ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces ( IF 9.5 ) Pub Date : 2024-06-13 , DOI: 10.1021/acsami.4c04251 6G communication mainly occurs in the THz band (0.1–10 THz), which can achieve excellent performance. Self-powered THz modulators are essential for achieving better conduction, modulation, and manipulation of THz waves. Herein, a self-powered terahertz modulator, which is based on metamaterials, liquid crystals (LCs), and rotary triboelectric nanogenerators (R-TENGs), is proposed to realize the driving of different array elements. The corresponding designs can achieve an integrated design and preparation method for dynamic spectrum-reconfigurable liquid crystal metamaterials. In addition, for the type of cross-structure metamaterial liquid crystal box, a phase modulation of 1 GHz is achieved at frequencies of 0.117 and 0.161 THz with modulation depths of 13 and 11%, respectively. Because the R-TENG with a multifan blade and circular electrodes can generate 18 peaks of electric output in every rotation, it can successfully provide sufficient frequency alternating-current electric energy to drive the terahertz modulator and achieve a self-powered function. Our findings lay a solid theoretical foundation for further building self-powered THz communication systems and promote the development of a theoretical system for LC-driving spectrum-reconfigurable devices in the THz domain. https://lnkd.in/eWB3p9QN
