Node.js: Node.js v22 was recently released (April 2024) and is now the current version. It includes some key features like: Support for requiring ESM (ECMAScript Modules) Built-in WebSocket client Upgrade to V8 12.4 Task runner (node --run task_name) Major Feature: 1. ESM Support (ECMAScript Modules): Node.js v22 introduces the ability to directly require ESM modules using the import statement. This is a significant step towards using modern JavaScript features in Node.js applications without additional tooling. Node.js v21 did not have built-in support for ESM. Other Features: 1. Built-in WebSocket Client: Node.js v22 includes an experimental built-in WebSocket client accessible through the --experimental-websocket flag. This allows developers to write WebSocket code without relying on external libraries (v21 required external libraries). 2. JavaScript Engine Update: Node.js v22 upgrades the V8 JavaScript engine to version 12.4, which may bring performance improvements and support for newer JavaScript features compared to the V8 11.8 engine used in Node.js v21. 3. Task Runner: Node.js v22 introduces a new way to execute tasks using the node --run task_name command. This can be a simpler approach for running specific scripts within your project (v21 did not have this feature). So, Node.js v22 offers significant advantages for new projects due to its built-in ESM support and other improvements.
