What new tech companies will change the UK? The UK tech sector is thriving, with a record number of new companies being incorporated in recent years. These new companies are developing a wide range of innovative technologies that have the potential to change the UK in several ways. It feels like only yesterday Adam and I were kicking things off, trying our best to spend our way through personal savings on coffee meeting after coffee meeting to get out there and introduce Intrinzic to the market. In the toughest year for many in the industry, some raised their eyebrows at our decision to start at that moment in time…… The thing is, there will never be a perfect time. If you were ready for it, it wouldn't be growth (thanks James Clear). And whilst there have been some tough initial months, we have never let that change our approach. Adam and I never set out to focus on quick wins, we set our sights on building genuine, value-driven relationships over time. This is why we set out our core behaviors: Authenticity, Resilience and Commitment to excellence. These core behaviours, alongside the trust we've built with our network, are what have allowed us to ride out the rough patches and come out feeling positive on what I would feel is a successful first year as Intrinzic. Travel debit card Currensea has raised over £1.7m from 760 investors in just four hours on crowdfunding platform Seedrs. Currensea initially targeted a raise of £1m at a valuation of £28.5m. The successful campaign comes after the #fintech hit 100k cardholders in March, with its money-saving app now used globally every nine seconds. Currensea says the funds raised will support future customer acquisition and continued development of its co-brand offering. James Lynn, co-founder of Currensea, comments: “Consumer appetite for travel has almost fully recovered from the pandemic and the unprecedented investor demand for Currensea demonstrates the need for a simple solution that eliminates FX fees and maximises the value of our savings." In 2022, Currensea raised over £4.5m through a Seedrs crowdfunding raise as well as VC investment from venture capitalist Blackfinch Ventures and 1818 Venture Capital. General election. Seasonality. Tough market. The perfect storm? I wish this month's Firefish Software recruitment industry performance update were more positive, but it's been a challenging month across perm, temp and contract. TL;DR🚀: - The total volume of placements decreased by 8%. - Temporary & contract placements decreased by 6%. - Permanent placements decreased by 10%. Further insights📖: - Jobs created decreased by 8% in June however placements made were still 2% higher than June 2023. - Total applications decreased by 14% on the month. - Only the Finance & Accountancy sector delivered positive growth on May. A really interesting time for the technology hiring space. Positive news on inflation today will act as another step to improving market confidence. The prospect of rate cuts in the second half of the year has already had an impact in the amount of money the sector is raising at seed and series A,B & C level. With powder needing to be deployed I anticipate 18 months of increasing activity in this area. That impacts hiring. Earlier this week I spoke about rising confidence on candidates in employment to make a move. This will increase leading to churn in technology departments. Already we are seeing strong profiles receiving multiple offers. Whilst it may not be a return to the end of 2021/2022 levels, I predict a strong rise in demand and competition and, almost inevitably, another rise in wage inflation in the sector. Hiring processes need to be on point and efficient. Looking forward to speaking to 50 Asset Managers from Europe, the US and Asia this afternoon about what this means for recruitment and retention across all sectors.

Are reference checks redundant? Suppose you've got a robust recruitment process for hiring software engineers, hiring managers who are confident in their decision-making, and group consensus from the team. Is there a need for referee checks? It's rare to receive transparent feedback from a referee, mainly because, in my opinion, people fear that that feedback will be exposed. Manual/electronic reports are now the norm, so you have to pick your words wisely. Referee checks conducted over the phone are the most effective medium; they enable both parties to be more candid and phrase things appropriately, but they are arguably less time-effective. The solution? -Fine-tune your recruitment process so you can confidently assess eq/culture/tech skills within a 2-3 stage process, -Upskill hiring managers around recruitment, communication & decision-making, -Ensure your TA, HR, & external recruitment partners are doing their due diligence and deeply understand the profile of candidates that work best in your environment and are doing adequate upfront qualification. On the candidate side, I'm a big proponent of requesting a written recommendation from your direct manager or somebody responsible for your work during your exit from the business. Request to add that to your LinkedIn profile or a separate recommendation doc you can attach to your CV. This will give your next employer more context, help your profile stand out, streamline the process, and alleviate the need to take up previous employers' valuable time. #refereechecks #softwarengineers #recruitment

June 2024 UK IT Salary & Contractor Rates If your company is thinking of hiring, do it now. As demand rises, so too with the rates of pay and the difficulty levels of attracting and securing the right talent. If, however, your company is slowing down - beware! If your IT staff start to feel insecure, talent competitors and recruiters will find it very easy to persuade your staff to interview elsewhere. Despite the stress and negativity that may exist, take the time to focus on reassuring your team and, where appropriate, reward their loyalty. It's a false economy to avoid salary increases for your best people. Doing so risks leave yourself vulnerable to losing key staff and the larger costs in both time and money of replacing them. UK Tech Trends in 2024 📈 Happy belated #WWDC day to iOS network. Every single year it is exciting to see what one of the world's most famous innovators come up with to improve the iOS space. This year we had iOS 18, further development of visionOS and Apple Intelligence. Big year ahead once again! 🎉 I read a fascinating article by TechRepublic which perfectly summarised the same trends I am seeing in the UK tech market. Some of the key stand outs I am noticing at the moment include: ⭐ Increased AI and LLM integration whilst keeping in mind the consequences of utilising this technology ⭐ Appetite from investors to place their money into FinTech, ClimateTech and HealthTech ⭐ Strong focus on increasing team size heading into H2 of 2024 and start of 2025 With all the negativity of the tech crisis in 2023 and start of 2024, it is good to hear positivity ringing out across the market again. An alarming reminder of the challenges we face in the recruitment market! CityA.M.'s latest report shows that over 400 UK recruitment companies went bust last year 🤯😩. Some of which were boutique SME's & Start-Ups, others were prestigious enterprises which you would've never predicted.
