What can guitarist Nuno Bettencourt teach us about enterprise processes?    I’ve been playing guitar since I was 13 years old, and the harsh reality is this: It’s not the gear, it's you. Nuno Bettencourt said it best in a recent interview with Rick Beato (check out Rick's YouTube channel for more info). One day, Nuno got to try Eddie Van Halen's guitar and amp on stage. Van Halen was his hero, and he thought he would finally get the chance to sound just like him... only to find out that he sounded just like the same old him! Of course, you need to have a decent rig, but the most expensive items you can buy won't bring anything new to your playing. It’s all in the hands and in the head. So, why am I even talking about this? Because when talking to our clients, we hear the same kind of behavior all the time. “Oh, we can't do this or that right now. We need a new tool for that.” Now, it is possible that the process to get a specific piece of information is so time-consuming and complicated that a tool is indeed the only way to get it. But most of the time, that's not the case. The problem lies in the fact that there's not a clear picture of what needs to be done to achieve a certain outcome. What’s unfortunate is, if you try to solve the problem with a new tool, you will often lose weeks, if not months, finding THE perfect tool (which might even be quite expensive). In the meantime, you will have lost time and money for little to no improvement in your day-to-day operations. That's why, at Quanta, we often say to our clients that what you can do with a tool, you should, in theory, be able to do with a pen and a piece of paper. If you can't do that, then maybe you haven't thought enough about what you are trying to achieve. Maybe the solution you are looking for can be achieved simply and for a fraction of the cost. That’s also why we believe that starting early with a simple solution will always beat a grand and spectacular digital transformation. So, that’s my piece of advice from the music world. Don’t spend too much time looking for that shiny piece of gear. Instead, concentrate on getting better with what you’ve got today. You won’t believe the rewards.

As they say on The Best One Yet, there are “Fees” (i.e. mandatory fees for goods & services) and then there are “Fee, Fee” (i.e. additional fees companies place on consumers for unbundling the cost of goods & services and charging it directly to the customer). The question is, when will consumers begin to feel the weight of these additional fees on their budget.

I'm regretting connecting with so many people interested in AI. All I'm hearing now is massive anti-AI sentiment because OpenAI poisoned the well for all of us. And these are people who connected with me on the basis of a shared interest in pro-AI. A while back I said that Sam Altman was going to be an Adam Neuman style catastrophe. After Sam mentioned his ridiculous $7tn chip investment scheme, I adjusted and said it would be far more spectacular a failure than I could imagine. I think we are seeing that failure happening right now. I initially thought it would be funny because I thought it would be limited to him and his hype cult, but it looks like I was wrong. There are a lot of people just plain straight up saying AI is fraud. Which I deeply disagree with. I don't think most of it is brain inspired and people can sing to the hills all they want about how AI thinks just like humans, and I'll be calling BS when they do. But I don't think AI is fraud. People are taking their disdain for companies like OpenAI and painting it across the entire industry. On top of that, AI development was already very overhyped, and a bunch of startups are closing up shop because they thought a stupid "Talk to my PDF" was going to be a billion-dollar company. So now you have public hatred, tons of wasted cash on overhyped products, and leery investors. In my mind, I think the whole industry is going to take a pretty big hit here pretty soon. Like the 2008 financial crisis across the AI industry, which will punch into the already weakening tech industry who greatly exposed themselves in AI in order to get ahead. If all of the Nvidia investors start dropping the stock because of a poor AI outlook, we could see people pulling out of tech in general just because they don't understand how involved a company is with AI or not. If people want to get ahead of that, they need to start educating their customers, friends, and family that a hit in AI confidence is not going to affect X, Y, and Z. Specifically, if you are an AI first company, you need to explain to investors and companies why, why not, and how you or your services are exposed to regulatory or economic changes. I would definitely not try to convince them that AI outlook is good, even if it is. What will happen is people will freak out and they will take signals from the crowd not the one lone voice assuring them everything is alright. So, just let people know what would happen to your company when the coming AI winter knocks at your door. Take steps to steel yourself against any anti-AI sentiment/AI disappointment/AI downturn trends. And most importantly, just keep building.

These things are tools — not panaceas — and we need to be able to discern how best to put them to work. "The best response to failed experiments is not, 'What a dumb idea, there’s nothing here.' For what it’s worth, I prefer: 'What can we learn from this? What’s next?'" I'm so grateful to have a partner with such a reasoned perspective on all of this.
