By defining sensible timeouts for AWS service calls, we can gracefully handle scenarios where responses are delayed or unavailable, maintaining system responsiveness and resource efficiency. 🔄 **Retries**: Transient failures are inevitable in distributed systems. Implementing retries allows our applications to recover from these transient errors automatically. By configuring intelligent retry policies, we can minimize the impact of temporary service disruptions and increase the likelihood of successful request completion. ⏳ **Backoff Strategies**: Exponential backoff is a powerful technique that progressively increases the time between retry attempts, reducing the likelihood of overwhelming downstream services during periods of high load or congestion. I had the opportunity to talk to a class of UW Oshkosh students this morning about my favorite nerd topic, SQL. (Thanks for the opportunity, Michael Patton!) The focus of the talk was "SQL in "The Cloud"", and I reiterated the most important thing - Structured Query Language is a fundamental skill. - SQL (the language) is the same no matter which cloud you're in. - Learn the basics - how to write good queries, what order the optimizer processes a query in, and how to do basic performance troubleshooting. - The Next Big Thing is AI, and clean OLTP data is the foundation of analytics, ML, and AI. Learning data and treating it as your greatest resource will serve you well in your IT career.

Not sure how closely you follow model releases from day to day, but a new model launched yesterday is one worth taking a look at. Highlights of the new Anthropic Claude 3.5 Sonnet model: 1/ available on Amazon Bedrock in us-east-1 2/ better benchmark performance than opus and GPT4o 3/ is priced the same as prior Claude 3 Sonnet model To better put that in perspective, consider the price per 1k input tokens to get close to similar level of intelligence on wednesday: - Opus : $0.015 (+400% more than 3.5 Sonnet) - GPT4o : $0.005 (+67% more than 3.5 Sonnet) - Claude 3.5 Sonnet: $0.003 Leading performance + prices that make it very attractive. Diving into Braze's most recent update, one innovation immediately caught my eye…. The early release of CDI from an Amazon S3 bucket!  This capability unlocks so many use cases. Many clients are already using S3 and this lets us get data into braze without needing to have users manually upload a file, make SDK updates or create credentials to support a direct database connection to a supported data warehouse. What data should you send to Braze through CDI or real time via SDK? Deciding what data to funnel through CDI or SDK in real-time isn't just about technical capability; it's a strategic decision. The timing and manner of data integration should be thoughtfully aligned with the outcomes it aims to achieve. Is a file upload the end goal, or a bridge to more comprehensive development? These considerations shape the effectiveness of our engagement strategies. I’m a sucker for a good data problem. Working with clients to unravel the complexities of data integration, tuning into the nuances of a data ecosystem, and pinpointing the most impactful path forward — that's an area where Stitch shines and its what makes us different!
