Healthcare is “hard.” We’ve all been saying it for some time. Often using it as an excuse to ignore or underestimate new entrants into the market. Maybe it’s true that some of these retail and Silicon Valley disruptors were aiming at the big healthcare spend without realizing the complexity of caring for human beings. But when healthcare as an industry celebrates these departures, it misses the point and the profound impact left behind. The reality is that consumers are frustrated with the healthcare experience. New “disruptors” promised to fix that for them. But most have failed so far. It’s up to the real healthcare industry, those with the heart, head, mission, and purpose to fix this for the community. Celebrating the failure of the disruption would be like wishing we could go back to the video store on Friday night to pick this weekend’s movie. We’ve moved on. I urge my colleagues to look at the lessons learned from these ventures. Listen to your communities and your consumers. Healthcare is complex, but we don’t have to make it so complicated to access. That’s on us. Big changes are inevitable; the American consumer won’t stop asking for a better experience. And they deserve it.

AI, traditional machine learning, and deep learning are projected to result in net savings of $200 billion to $360 billion in healthcare spending. Pretty cool to be working at one of the most innovative companies in the space, where every objective is to make healthcare simple for providers and patients. Even cooler to be marketing one of the most potentially impactful solutions in the Patient Access Curator, where AI, ML and RPA converge to deliver accurate demographic, insurance coverage, eligibility and MBI data in less time it took for you to read this post.

💯 I know this article is mostly addressing the humanism of medicine but it’s also really interesting to think about the when, where, and how AI should be used in diagnosis and treatment. On the one hand we know the simple straightforward cases often don’t require a doctor (and in the case of AI, maybe don’t require a person at all…) but it’s identifying those cases that’s hard. I’m always thinking about the exceptions to the rule and I find myself caveating the hell out of things to our product and eng teams. ���Most of the time x means y, but sometimes x means a or b or even c.” It’s probably really annoying to folks just trying to build something that solves the most common 90%, but as a physician, I know that edge cases is where people die. Coincidentally, same problem for autonomous driving. (For the record I do strongly believe there is a bright future for AI in healthcare…and in cars.) #healthtech #AIinhealthcare

Conferences can be great...but what happens to your notes and learnings? 😬 You've moved your schedule around so you can make the trip. You've spent the time, money, and brain power attending a conference. You've listened to remarkable leaders talk about hot topics (probably AI). You take copious notes, listen intently, and truly experience the experience. And then you get home. Unpack your bag (at some point), address your laundry, and get back on your schedule. 💡 Before you lose that conference notebook or deprioritize your doc of notes, make these three slides to share with your team during your next team meeting. 1) Your top 3-5+ learnings. One line each. It doesn't have to be groundbreaking, think high level aha moments. 2) A brief summary of you will start, stop, or continue because of those learnings. 3) Photos. I know you have them. One of my favorite things about working in Health Tech is witnessing innovation in real-time. This week, I sat down with Co-founder & CPO Kristina Furlan at Iron Health to discuss how they are leveraging RPM technology to improve patient outcomes in their weight management program. I highly recommend giving her blog a read: https://lnkd.in/eAiS48a3 As a Woman myself, I have seen firsthand how care can seem confusing, intimidating, and at times, feel as if I'm not being cared for at all. Iron Health is empowering its patients with the knowledge and support needed to be self-advocates-- breaking the social norm of patients believing they do not have the right to receive high-quality care. Kristina explained the reasoning behind having a habit-building framework "(cue -> routine -> reward)" to accomplish a long-term goal. A framework that can be relayed in every aspect of life. The smallest task such as giving yourself a high-five can make all the difference in achieving success. For Iron Health's patients, RPM allows these trends to be visible, emphasizing that growth is not linear, and small consistent efforts result in big outcomes. Give this framework a try, I think we all could give ourselves an extra high-five now and again!

Running Signify's Care Coordination Services, I am constantly monitoring how our operations are performing. We track things like reach rate, transfer rates, handle time, etc. through Salesforce so the data is always available. However, there is natural variability day to day, week to week. Are things running OK or did something go wrong? How do we know if we variability is random variability of the process itself or special cause variability, where something has changed that we need to address? Quality control methodologies can help us figure it out!   In the early 20th century, Walter Shewhart devised fundamental quality control techniques while at Bell Laboratories. He focused on statistical process control, monitoring performance of a process over time to reduce variance and identify when a process has gone awry. I have found the X-bar chart to be the most useful of Shewhart's innovations. It displays the average of a variable (e.g. average reach rate per week) through time, as well as the control limits (upper, lower, center). This chart makes it easy to see when the process is performing "within tolerance" or outside of the normal limits.   The #R package qcc has a wealth of functionality to measure and plot the output of a process. For many of us in health tech startups, it's so much more than "just a job". It's personal. We are passionately driven to positively improve people's lives. While that may sound Pollyannaish to those outside the industry, IYKYK. 😏 But it's also hard. Frustrating. Interesting to see that digital health funding is relatively stable. Only a couple of exits. I think we'll see more deals like DarioHealth's acquisition of Twill, since from a sales perspective, the narrower the solution, the more difficult it is to acquire customers. This difficulty has nothing to do with the quality of offerings, but with the data management and administrative complexity on the customer side.
