As a designer, this is such a clear example of how good design does not just come from a designer. Clear business priorities lead to great content design, great content design leads to an intuitive user experience, and an intuitive user experience sets a designer up perfectly to create clean and delightful UI. It works the other way as well, a good UI designer is always looking to make their design look visually appealing and intuitive. If unclear priorities impede this goal, they should raise questions, do research, and suggest options with clearer priorities. That's why it's important to have a designer who is part of the problem-framing and solution building process, speaking to stakeholders, and working with the whole team.

Great advice. Remove all friction when sending your portfolio. Keep it simple and remove all restrictions.

We have a large project that's primarily handled by my Design Director and PM—it's straightforward, but has a very detailed process associated with it. Review, QA, documentation all needs to be handled very specifically. So when we had an upcoming client review and we knew these team members would be out on PTO—we got together ahead of time, documented the process and debriefed two brand new team members who would fill in. And oh boy did it go...great. Document or Die folks. #yesterlearnings #prepare #documentation

UI design's love affair with Figma reminds me of 15 years ago when my classmates asked the professor for more instruction on how to use InDesign. The professor told them that several decades prior, *he* had been asking his instructors the same questions about Quark XPress. Of course, no one cared about Quark XPress then, and fewer people care about the Adobe suite every day. But the things you *do* with it remain. The fundamentals of layout and typography stay the same, as does the customer's Mark 1 Eyeball. If you know them, you can figure out how to apply them with any tool. If you don't know them, you can only be as good of a designer as Quark's/InDesign's/Figma's path of least resistance allows you to be.

A lot of what we do as designers is clean up. Sure, we talk about story arcs and designing the experience, but the average presentation may not have the time or resources to think bigger than getting it done, even when it’s an essential pitch by the C-suite for a new initiative. That's where following the template, using it wisely to maximize variation, and keeping it simple comes into play. Much of what you need to say should be in the talk track rather than in the slide, and if you need to go into detail, use an appendix, preread existing material, or a download to let people dive deep. Designing for a screen comes with practice, like riding a bike. In my experience helping thousands of presenters, the less design YOU have to do, the better it is for you and the AUDIENCE. Focus on *design that matters.* Be *intentional with design.* #presentationdesign

WOW This Fundamentals in UX Design course from the UX Design Institute is amazing. I just burst into the living room declaring to my husband PEOPLE DON'T BUY TECHNOLOGY, THEY BUY SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS! Then I looked at the remote control with scorn WHY DOES IT HAVE SO MANY BUTTONS?! 80% of users only use 20% of the features. Don't they know that features are a trade-off for usability? Designers need to be an integral part of the process from start to finish, advocating for the user and working with engineering team every step of the way so they make products people actually WANT and LIKE! Okay, rant over. I will get back to my course now... #uxdesign

Designers want to know how to level up and charge more. The path there is not as complicated as you think. First, analyze the market you are serving. Do they have large budgets? If not, shift to a market with more financial resources to invest in design.

Successful designers make it a habit to Put People First. How do you Put People First? Begin with the needs of the people you are designing for, instead of starting with the latest technology. User-centered design, human-centered design, and even design thinking all advocate keeping people involved throughout their processes and methods. Involve your customers and users throughout the process – early and often. Your outcome will be more valuable. User-centered design processes include user research at the start, user reviews and feedback during, and validation after design.
