#Friday Auqa Insights 🌊 Here’s a brief roundup of policy changes and regulatory updates in New Jersey's wastewater management sector. 𝐅𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞: The EPA has initiated new rule makings under Preliminary Effluent Guidelines Program Plan 15, focusing on reducing contaminants like PFAS and nutrients from certain industries. This step is part of ongoing efforts to enhance water quality and reduce wastewater pollution. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬: New Jersey has updated its Stormwater Management Rules, mandating the inclusion of green infrastructure in major development projects. This policy aims to improve stormwater runoff management and bolster water quality across the state. 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Through the Water Quality Management Planning (WQMP) program, New Jersey continues to prioritize sustainable water resource management, aligning with the Clean Water Act's standards to ensure future development considers water quality and quantity protection. #wastewater #wastewatertreatment #waternews #aquainsights

Did you know the 1st U.S. application of the water treatment technology #FRRO was at Santa Monica’s Arcadia Water Treatment Plant? BC’s own Adam Zacheis conceptualized the process in the early stages of his career. Learn why FRRO was the right solution for Santa Monica in our new interactive web series, “From Proof to Proven: Journeys to Water Independence.” https://ow.ly/8F2x50Sx7pp

Hydrogen sulfide is present in wastewater due to anaerobic activity, which favors sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and results in the generation of a poisonous rotten egg gas called H2S. ALKA-Mag+ effectively locks up H2S to prevent release as a gas that produces odor and facilitates corrosion. ALKA-Mag+ is safe to handle and cost effective with many benefits that reduce treatment costs at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). #IER #Calix #ALKAMag+ https://loom.ly/JNmiWhQ

Bullseye - Jeff Holyoak, To think for decades we have spent money to get CO2 out the ground in places like CO, NM, MS etc., etc. to be used in manufacturing and industrial applications ... So, now we wanna recover post combustion CO2 and from other sources such as ethanol, clean it up so we can liquify it for super critical transportation and injection BACK in the GROUND. 🤔 All these solutions or applications are in the beginning phases or nascent. Getting tax credits in many instances till scale or advancements allow commercialization. It is not waste .... it is a product. Is it the applicability of tax credits that minimize that path be taken?

The EPA has now set individual PFAS Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) that go into effect today. The stated MCLs for PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) include the following: *Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) - 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt) (also expressed as ng/L) *Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) - 4.0 ppt *Perfluorohexanesulfonic Acid (PFHxS) - 10 ppt *Perfluorononanoic Acid (PFNA) - 10 ppt *Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) (commonly known as GenX Chemicals) - 10 ppt

Project Summary - Active Gas Station—Eastern Michigan ORIN successfully implemented Free Product Removal (FPR) in-situ chemical oxidation using catalyzed sodium persulfate to treat LNAPL, contaminated soil, and groundwater. Treatment chemistry was injected while the Geoprobe rods were raised throughout the target interval. A vac truck was present to remove LNAPLand desorbed contaminants while providing hydraulic control. Approximately 2,400 gallons of 20% sodium persulfate catalyzed with PermeOx Plus was injected into 47 DPT injection locations. A second polish injection was needed to achieve site cleanup goals. In June of 2011, 24 DPT points were injected with approximately 1,200 gallons of 20% catalyzed sodium persulfate treatment. Project Results The catalyzed sodium persulfate treatment chemistry removed the free product and reduced the dissolved phase BTEX concentrations at the most contaminated well by an average of 78%, between pre-injection and post-injection sampling. Additionally, subsequent sampling events have observed no measurable LNAPL. The residual PermeOx Plus catalyst will continue to provide an oxygen source promoting bioremediation. https://lnkd.in/gqFwMs3A

Why do the regulations/requirements for direct potable reuse look so different from one state to another? Shouldn’t public health protection be the same regardless of where you are? The current issue of the Potable Water Reuse Report dives into this question and sheds light on several elements OUTSIDE of the public health sphere that often drive these requirements. We interviewed regulators and stakeholders from multiple states that are working on (or already have) direct potable reuse regulations to understand what is shaping their regulations and requirements. DPR regulations will not be one-size-fits-all…take a read to find out more! Thanks to Karthik Kumarasamy, PhD, PE, Darrin Polhemus, Tyson Ingels, Bart Weiss, Lynn Spivey, Shellie Chard, Gilbert Trejo, PE, BCEE, Danielle Zebelean, M.S., P.E. for sharing their insights for this issue. Laboratories generate four types of chemical waste characteristics. The characteristics of these waste materials include: Corrosivity- Waste that can decompose and rust with the ability to melt through steel materials Toxicity- Waste that is fatally poisonous when absorbed or ingested Ignitability- Waste that is flammable with the ability to create fires Reactivity- Waste that is unstable or explosive under normal conditions #EMSLLC #HazardousWasteMangement #ChemicalWasteManagement #LabPackDisposal #LabPackManagement #ChemistryLab #WastewaterManagement #LabTech #LabManager #ChemicalWaste #DrugDisposal #HazardousWaste #RadioactiveWaste #GoGreen #WasteManagement #OffSpec #EnvironmentalProtection #GreenCompany #ChemicalWasteSolutions #WastewaterSolutions #PharmaceuticalWaste #UniversalWasteManagement #HazardousWasteDisposal

CERCLA regulations are a new world for non-hazardous landfill owners and operators. With two PFAS compounds being designated as hazardous substances under CERCLA and the presence of these compounds in leachate, all landfill owners/operators should have a basic understanding of CERCLA. This piece presents a brief CERCLA 101 as well as information about other recent EPA actions concerning PFAS. #CERCLA #leachate #grantfunding #MCLs #PFAS
