San Diego’s senior population is set to increase in the coming years, raising concerns for those who don’t have the support of close family, also known as elder orphans. In the next 10 years, adults over 65 will outnumber children under 18 for the first time in United States history, according to Census Bureau data. San Diego County’s senior population is projected to grow by more than 21% during that time. This is a growing concern for elder orphans. “When you get older, the risk factors for becoming more likely to be isolated or alone, are increased. You’re more likely to lose family and friends and significant others as they pass away. You’re more likely to become more frail and less mobile,” said Ellen Lee, MD, geriatric psychiatrist at UC San Diego Health. "It is challenging for clinicians to identify these individuals, making it difficult to manage the complexities involved in delivering care, especially if they don’t volunteer the information." Over 1,000 organizations across California agree: We must #ProtectFURS Yesterday, through The Children’s Movement of California, over 1,000 organizations signed on and sent a letter to Governor Newsom urging him to keep the Family Urgent Response System in the state budget. The in-person helpline specifically designed to support foster youth and caregivers is currently proposed to be eliminated. This collective show of strength sends the clear message that California should never abandon foster kids to balance its budget. Summer is fully upon us, but as always, as we are in the midst of one season, we are always looking forward to what is next and reflecting on what has happened within the sector in the past. On June 25, 2024, The Giving USA Foundation, in partnership with Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, released Giving USA: The Annual Report on Philanthropy. We wanted to take a bit to talk about the trends this comprehensive report is showing and about upcoming reports that NAO will be releasing as well. Knowing the trends and impacts within our sector is critical for future planning of what giving may look like. The Giving USA report looks at giving trends, comparing 2021-2022 to 2022-2023. Much of the information is similar to what we already know – individual giving is down as inflation rises. However, the news isn’t all bad. 2023 saw an all-time high in giving, with 557.16 billion dollars, even when adjusted for inflation. Bequests saw the only positive change over 2021-2022, with an increase of .6%. With 77 million Americans age 60 and older, bequests and planned giving are areas we should start focusing on now, as this number is expected to grow as the Baby Boomer generation continues to age. Their wealth grew 30% between 2019 and 2023, so stewarding these donors should be a critical step in your development planning going forward. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gd6NYycc

As long as poverty persists, so will hunger. 1.1 million Californians on SSI/SSP should not have to choose between food, shelter, and medicine, yet the price of these basic needs exceeds the individual SSI grants in ALL counties. Poverty caused by insufficient SSI/SSP grants doesn’t just hurt low-income people, but it also hurts the community & costs CA money for other services. We urge the #CABudget Scott Wiener Jesse Gabriel to protect and support investment in #SSI to allow recipients to reach economic self-sufficiency & live with dignity.

#TruthTuesday The University of California San Francisco’s Benioff Homelessness & Housing Initiative has found new and worrying statistics regarding homelessness and our elderly members of society. Their recent study has found that 48% of all unhoused single adults in California are aged 50 years and older. Of those numbers struggling with homelessness, 41% did not become homeless until after the age of 50. There are many contributing factors to these statistics, ranging from a lack of rent protection to the lack of access to support materials and programs to poor health, increasing medical costs, and many other factors stemming from everyday challenges. It's a big day for my alma mater, Oregon State University, and the Oregon State University Foundation. For this year's Dam Proud Day, I'm supporting the Finish in Four scholarship program because I believe that more Oregonians should be able to attend OSU and graduate with little to no debt. OSU aims to become a university where every student graduates. But some just don’t have the resources they need to stay in school. Currently, students with high financial need and underrepresented students of color typically graduate at rates 10% lower than their higher-income peers. The university’s new Finish in Four program is designed to close those gaps and make it possible for more Oregon resident students to graduate in four years with little to no debt. Finish in Four provides four-year scholarships, but the program is more than monetary aid: it’s part of a multifaceted, university-wide effort designed to help students thrive. Program participants will be part of a supportive cohort that builds a sense of belonging and provides programming and services to ensure academic success. https://lnkd.in/gvP65jiv

#Trust in government, civic institutions, and even each other, are at historic lows. Wonder: Strategies for Good has been developing and testing strategies to better understand the facets of messages that facilitate trust. Daniel Gonzalez Galvan from Goodwin Simon Strategic Research (GSSR) and I recently testified before the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) about the #messaging interventions Wonder developed in partnership with CSAC. In the research Wonder co-led with GSSR to boost confidence among students and parents to pursue financial aid, we tested the trustworthiness of our messages. Here's what we learned: Eighty-four percent of students and 85 percent of parents found the messages we developed for CSAC to be trustworthy — a remarkable level of trust. These messages also increased the confidence in students — especially high school students not currently on a college track — to pursue #financialaid and a #postsecondary education. Today marks the launch of OBI's inaugural Oregon Competitiveness Book, a collection of more than 50 indicators of economic competitiveness, from per-capita personal income to public school performance. For each indicator, the Oregon Competitiveness Book ranks Oregon among the 50 states. What do the Oregon Competitiveness Book and companion site show? They describe a state that has a great deal of work to do if it wishes to remain competitive. Oregon is exceptional in some areas, including quality of life, technology and innovation. But it is exceptionally uncompetitive in others. State and local taxes are among the nation’s highest for individuals and businesses, for example. And its regulatory environment is ranked among the country’s most stifling. “States are locked in a fierce competition for talented people and innovative businesses, and the Oregon Competitiveness Book shows that Oregon is not competing nearly as well as it can,” says OBI President and CEO Angela Wilhelms. “By many measures, in fact, Oregon is becoming increasingly less competitive.” Click the link below to check it out.
