⚡ Key learnings after completing 30 days in Product Operations ⚡ ✅ 100% of my focus is process-related vs less than 20% when I was a Product Management Leader 📈 ✅ While my focus is on processes, I can't work in isolation. - - The people are part of any process - - Their roles and departmental needs need to be considered - - In a growing organization approaching 700 employees, finding and getting to know all the right stakeholders takes time but is so important to achieving success together. 🙌 ✅ It is important that Product Ops report directly to the CPO for buy-in and support in implementing cross-functional changes. 📣 ✅ Leaders will take the time to share their departmental processes and areas for improvement if they understand you are there to help. 🆘 ✅ Learning the organization's nomenclature and uniting on terminology makes getting the "buy-in" much easier to achieve. 🔖 Are you thinking about Product Operations as your next stepping stone? 🤔 Do you have insight and advice to share? 💡

+1 Shobhit I strongly believe PM must have the needed tech depth. It’s absolutely essential. For example, as a PM for a car manufacturing company such as Tesla or GM, you can’t have an insightful decision making discussion with engineers about the differentiating features of engine, transmission etc.,  if PMs don’t have the needed technical understanding of those components. However, as a PM, you are there to uniquely add value to other business areas such as in depth understanding of what features your company/brand should sunset or double down on based on your in depth understanding of customers (like no other), growing up sales, adoption etc. In essence, you are a business owner. So, even though it’ll never hurt to be a very technical sound person, you have others (e.g. scientist with a PhD and two decades of specialized experience on the car engines ) in team to fill that gap. You should know why your company is writing that check to you to uniquely fill what void.

Product Management drill up on roles: . . . . Senior Product Managers: owner of Vision/Mission/goals of a product. Product Managers: Wizard for Stakeholder management/negotiations/research/product roadmap/delivery. Associate Product Managers: Most important people who help in feature refinement/collaboration with engineering/delivery quality. Obviously if a company has only one/two person for the entire product, things can get messed up while it is the responsibility of folks in team to take up other areas or founder to define the right policies and expectations. At the end work shouldn’t stop. #product #productmanagement

TL;DR: Well written lines of relevant product thoughts are the measure of a product manager's output just like well-written lines of code are for an engineer. Long version: Q. As a Product manager, (PM) what is one (of a few other ways) way you know you did justice to your role? A. It's simple. Measure and compare words spoken Vs written by you in your day. Drawing useful visuals is an acceptable option to words written. Why? Words spoken >> are often ignored, not grasped, not recorded and ephemeral. They rely heavily on the audience to have noted, interpreted and acted upon. They are also not the most organized form of communicating. Words written (or a drawing) >> are near-permanent if chosen to be recorded on a searchable, publicly available medium like your internal Confluence, Sharepoint or a Slack broadcast that gets pinned. They can be iterated upon, reviewed often, referenced in the future and analyzed in greater depth faster than listening to a recorded meeting repeatedly. PMs can create a lasting, noticeable and wider impact by writing things down, even if its just in a meeting chat. Even if no one else read them, the writer themselves reaps the benefit of more thoughtful, organized and durable structuring of their ideas. Humble confession: Being vocally self-critical, I just went by for 1.5 "busy (meetings)" days without writing anything meaningful besides meeting notes and action items, and felt the need to share this. Rant: At every place I have worked, I have seen at least a few Product Managers never putting pen to paper and thinking their job is done when they show up to a meeting, provide lackluster opinions or worse yet, simply nod in shallow agreement or recap the standard procedural statements like "this needs additional prioritization discussion". #writemore #beabetterpm #whatdoesaproductmgrdoanyway #nongenaipost

Cement to be evenly spread to glue it Every alternating layer will be symmetrical ✅One on the LEFT They're aligned to deliver Experience They understood each line They want to delight ❌ On the right They're just completing their tasks They skimmed through it They want to go home I hold my Business, Engineering and Design accountable to read every word in the PRD. Exciting news—I accomplished something amazing yesterday and I'm still in awe! I demo’ed the Beneficiary/User Experience that my team and I have been tirelessly working on since I joined the company. All our sleepless nights came to fruition as I showcased our work to the entire organization. Even though I initiating the New Beneficiary experience from scratch to overseeing the discovery, brainstorming, design, and development phases, and collaborated closely with my engineers for the past six months. Yesterday's demo was particularly unique. Despite having presented to various groups over the last two months, this specific demo demanded intense preparation, knowing how much was at stake. Post-demo, I think you can say I am now FAMOUS 😂😂😂 (see screenshot below) I’ve received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback and messages—I might need a day off just to respond to everyone! 🤣 As a Product Manager, my core responsibilities doesn’t only entail collaborating with stakeholders, strategic planning, conducting research, brainstorming solutions, ensuring the delivery of usable features/products, and monitoring performance, but a crucial aspect is advocating for your product. Turning users, investors, and stakeholders into true believers because no matter how great a product is, it’s ineffective if you can’t successfully sell it. Working on an immigration product is deeply personal for me, and I am truly appreciative of this opportunity. It's surreal to think that the same immigration firm who represented me and I persistently contacted about long wait times when I was at Amazon, is now the place where I’m building features to address CALL deflection. It’s a testament to how everything happens for a reason. My client called me and said, 'Annett, I think it's time for me to be a #productleader. Is my company the right one for this move?' 🤔 He had been working in senior product management roles for the last five years. His goal was to step up as a Product Leader with people management responsibilities, moving from delivering products to leading a team of product managers. Faced with his company’s ongoing reorganization, he was unsure whether to stay or find leadership opportunities elsewhere. That was the reason he reached out to me to coach him through this decision-making process and transition into product leadership. I proposed a hybrid coaching strategy given the unstable company environment. We developed a goal-oriented career roadmap that focused on advancing his influence within the company, while also working out an effective and manageable networking strategy to leverage opportunities outside his current organization. A major milestone was choosing a strategic initiative, which helped him stand out and demonstrate his leadership potential in front of key stakeholders in the company. We worked on improving his communication and presentation skills, which had a major impact on his authority both inside the company and externally. Last week, he called me, telling me that he was offered a Product Director role in his current company. He was extremely happy because this position had people management responsibilities and was based on the strategic initiative he had been leading. We are often stuck in the scenarios, when the made up Organizational Optics around product discovery/delivery becomes more taxing then the execution itself. What the middle management or upper middle management, with limited authority should do? Shreyas Doshi has suggested an approach for building two "worlds", within your boundary. This is indeed more work for you, and arguably very few of us are able to do this, and fewer attain mastery. Inside World: Your team/department/people around you. Here, prioritize protecting them from negativity. This might involve ignoring unproductive company processes. Outside World: The broader company. Adapt to existing structures, even if frustrating. Play the game and deliver what the company needs, even if it feels superficial. Having said that, the approach of two "worlds", gives you freedom to build in your inside peripheral, it also gives you that slice of happiness and containment. #leadership #communication #workplacehacks #careerdevelopment P.S. I joined Stitch Fix 3 months ago and it's been an amazing onboarding journey so far! 🙌🏻 Here's my quick checklist on the first 90-day for Product Managers starting a new role: 1. Have deep-dive sessions with your manager, cross-functional partner and teammates 2. Understand the org structure, current team challenges and recent key deliveries 3. Familiarize yourself with company glossary, top metric definition 4. Review recent company all-hands decks, team monthly business reviews and partner team presentations 5. Discover commonly used dashboards by teams and the metrics that matter the most 6. Have coffee or lunch meetups with other product managers 7. Summarize jargon, learnings, and flow definitions into a “New PM hire onboarding manual” 8. Re-visit existing OKRs and align with the team on OKR changes 9. Facilitate a team offsite (especially for remote teams) and organize knowledge-sharing sessions 10.
