Not everyone gets as thrilled about data exchange as some (me!) but allow me a minute of your time to show you why you should be excited by this work we're pleased to share with the world today! As many organizations in the apparel sector know, after Rana Plaza, the Transparency Pledge (https://lnkd.in/eYHDA7vT), led by Clean Clothes Campaign Human Rights Watch Worker Rights Consortium and others, successfully established a de-facto standard in the apparel sector for how to share supply chain data transparently. With others in our community, we sat down and asked the questions: - What would it look to expand this concept to all sectors and supply chains? - What if all supply chain data was exchanged on one common language, in an open community, dedicated to quality data, interoperability, eliminating confusion and redundancies and a absolute mess!?! - What if we seized the opportunity of a new legislative landscape, namely CSDDD, CSRD, EUDR and more, and established a common language, open to all, to facilitate data exchange and create harmonization when the legislation doesn't? As new regulations, changing environmental conditions, and shifting consumer values rapidly change the state of supply chains reporting, we need tools for interoperable data sharing. I'm excited to introduce the Open Data Exchange Standard for Global Supply Chains (https://lnkd.in/em6XNAhh). This data exchange standard is built to 1) support up-to-date policy implementation around supply chains due diligence reporting 2) serve and be used by stakeholders spanning corporations to communities impacted by supply chains and 3) provide technical tooling built on open data to streamline transparency and collaboration across supply chains. Based on the foundational work done by Mapped in Bangladesh (MiB), Open Supply Hub, and Wikirate through the support of the Laudes Foundation, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and Humanity United, we’ve activated five main workstreams critical to co-creating a data exchange standard. "D2C or not D2C? That is the question".* At a time when Nike is pulling back from an aggressive move towards the Direct to Consumer channel (more here: https://lnkd.in/eDiVyD3C), Levi's and other brands are leaning into D2C. On the face of it, the strategy is driven by sales and brand loyalty but supply chain strategy and execution is central to success. For example: - More D2C means more inventory carrying costs and more transportation and warehousing costs. - In Levi's case, this is, in part, being offset through a SKU rationalization plan; a reduction by as much as 25% of unique items. On top of this, Levi's is offering in-store customization such as patches and paint. - Another way of increasing efficiency (and discounts) is to reduce the time between the 'product idea' and the product being on a shelf by leveraging more/better customer data from the D2C channel. - The brand loyalty and market intelligence benefits of good customer intelligence are a theme throughout and speaks to Nike's significant investments in digital consumer platforms. “This trend is more than just annoying – it's a sustainability nightmare.” This informative BBC News report by Kathryn Lindsay confirms what most of us have experienced – we order products online that arrive in boxes that are significantly larger than required.   According to the report, more than three billion trees are cut down every year to make the paper-based packaging that ends up cluttering your home or stuffed in a refuse bin.   We’ve just recognized Earth Day 2024. We’re 3 years past the start of the pandemic, when the world started to order all our needs and wants online for home delivery. We should all be learning better, faster, how to optimize this process.  There are solutions and data that can help this process, but as with other areas, much of it comes down to behaviors and what is measured.   I know most retailers are trying hard, and have made strides. I also understand that teams in warehouses are under tremendous pressure for efficiency and speed. But we also know that many retailers have not made it a high enough priority, and in some cases, per the article, they even subscribe to the theory that psychologically many consumers value getting larger boxes versus right-sized boxes.    As it turns out, we received two boxes yesterday at home, both containing the exact same item, from the same retailer, and the same warehouse. I’ll include a photo of the boxes in the comments, and as you can see by the smaller box, it was a record album (shocking to my friends, I know). Putting an album in the larger box seems ridiculous, and looked that way pulling it out.

Amazon continuing its test & learn strategy to expand its grocery business. Also noteworthy is that it includes grocery retailers on Amazon.com, not just its own grocery ( continuing to build an ecosystem and offer more to customers) Excerpts: Dive Brief: Amazon announced Tuesday a new grocery subscription available to Prime members and customers using EBT. The subscription, which costs $9.99 per month for Prime members and $4.99 per month for non-Prime members with an EBT card, provides free grocery delivery on orders over $35 across Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market and grocery retailers on Amazon.com such as Cardenas Markets and Save Mart.   The subscription adds to the string of changes Amazon is making to its grocery offerings as it looks to sharpen its presence as a grocer as well as bolster its Prime membership. Dive Insight: Amazon is positioning its new grocery subscription as a “low, monthly fee” that “pays for itself” after one delivery per month. “Our goal is to build a best-in-class grocery shopping experience — whether shopping in-store or online — where Amazon is the first choice for selection, value, and convenience,” Tony Hoggett, senior vice president of worldwide grocery stores at Amazon, said in an emailed statement. “We have many different customers with many different needs, and we want to save them time and money every time they shop for groceries.” Grocery delivery has been one area in particular that Amazon has grappled with recently. In January 2023, Amazon Fresh raised its threshold for free delivery to $150 but then 10 months later lowered that minimum to $100. A month later, Amazon said it started offering grocery delivery and free pickup to non-Prime members in all markets where its Amazon Fresh stores and online services operate, with plans to expand grocery delivery and free pickup from Whole Foods to shoppers who aren’t Prime members. #amazon #grocery #ecosystem

Amazon.com has been successful with many unusual strategies over the years, but one of the company’s most recent wins has been convincing retailers to undervalue their physical assets and focus on trying to compete in the online sphere. This focus on digital commerce has successfully distracted retailers from fully monetizing the massive opportunity already within their control — real estate and in-person consumer audiences — and instead shifted them to try and battle with Amazon in an arena that the brown boxes already dominate. #omnichannelretail #retailstrategy
