When Oil and Gas CEOs Sit Down to Talk Is a Time to Listen  Headline speakers at industry events are the forever premium attraction to draw an audience. Who doesn’t want to hear from the nation’s top oil and gas CEOs sharing their company stories and foresight? But aside from those presentations largely scripted, one-on-one interviews can offer other takeaway gems when energy leaders sit down to address questions. And while we can’t share them all, Reese Energy Consulting today is following the latest two Q&As in case you missed them. They’re worth the read. Alan Armstrong, president and CEO of Tulsa-based pipeline giant Williams, is a familiar figure on the speaker circuit with a whole lot to say about natural gas. He preaches and teaches about the evolving role natural gas plays in today’s energy spectrum and how Williams—a company now more than a century old—continues to rise like cream at the top. In a recent Q&A with McKinsey & Company, Armstrong shared WMB’s acquisition strategy following its recent series of pipeline, gathering and processing, and storage pick-ups that add to its sprawling infrastructure network, saying “Doing deals just to get bigger is a failed strategy.” Maybe not so much for Houston-based E&P Chord Energy, whose February acquisition of Enerplus has been wet-kissed the largest operator in the Williston and now valued at $11 billion. In a Hart Energy interview with Chord’s Danny Brown, the CEO reveals “Getting bigger isn’t always better but there’s more ways to be better if you’re bigger.” Now supersized in the Bakken, Chord operates 1.3 million net acres, reported 168.4 MBOED in 1Q, and not at all entertaining an acquisition trip out of the basin it knows best. EnCap Energy Transition, a Houston-based firm, closed its second fund at $1.5 billion. The fund, known as EETF II, is dedicated to investing in solutions for decarbonizing the power industry and supporting low carbon fuels and carbon management. The company has made investment commitments to five portfolio companies through EETF II, aiming to support renewable energy projects that struggle to attract traditional financing. EnCap Energy Transition's Managing Partners Jim Hughes and Jason DeLorenzo express pride in their sizeable capital pool dedicated to decarbonization. #ICYMI: Earlier this month, John Pope, CGC's President and CEO, presented at the Wyoming Energy Authority's Next Frontier Energy Summit! John presented an "Ignite Session" entitled, "Coal-Assisted CO2 Capture & Sequestration," which outlines CGC's unique #carboncapture and storage (#CCS) process of sequestering #carbondioxide into #coal seams. During the presentation, John spoke about how this process has many benefits, including #economic impact. By letting coal assist in #CCS, we can dramatically drop the cost of #CCS. In fact, natural coal filtering significantly reduces the cost of #CCS for 80% of #industrial sources. Additionally, John noted how there's currently around $100 billion of methane sitting in the ground between the Powder and Green River Basins in Wyoming, representing $20 billion in taxes and royalties from Wyoming. Supermajors Chevron and Exxon Mobil are continuing to lean on U.S. shale for oil and gas production growth. Chevron Corp. highlighted the importance of its shale portfolio in the Permian Basin and the Rockies during first-quarter earnings on April 26. Chevron’s worldwide production averaged approximately 3.35 MMboe/d during the first quarter, a 12% increase from 2.98 MMboe/d during first-quarter 2023. U.S. net production increased by 35% over the same period. Chevron CEO Mike Wirth attributed some of the gains to Chevron’s $6.3 billion acquisition of Colorado producer PDC Energy last year, deepening the company’s footprint in the DJ Basin. DJ Basin production grew by 263,000 boe/d year-over-year in the first quarter. The Permian Basin, the nation’s top oil-producing region, also helped lift the company’s total production in the past year. Chevron’s Permian volumes grew by 142,000 boe/d year-over-year. Many shale producers plan to keep their oil and gas output relatively flat this year, while a handful of smaller public E&Ps and private producers aim to raise production. Chevron said cumulative shale and tight oil and gas production fell by around 17,000 boe/d from the end of 2023 through the first quarter. Permian volumes averaged 859,000 boe/d during the first quarter, down from 867,000 boe/d during fourth-quarter 2023, Wirth said. Chevron expects first half of 2024 Permian output to be down less than 2% compared to the fourth quarter; The company had anticipated a decline of between 2% and 4%. “We've got more wells online and expect to exit the year around 900,000 (boped),” Wirth said. Chevron is driving some D&C efficiencies in the Permian, including “significantly shorter frac-to- [put on production]” cycle times, he said. That resulted in a few additional wells being brought online in the first quarter. Wirth said Chevron is “seeing strong performance” from new wells drilled in the Permian, including both the Midland and Delaware basins. The strong Permian performance includes contributions from Chevron’s non-operated joint venture portfolio and its royalty acreage. Wirth said Chevron’s royalty acreage delivers the company’s highest-return barrels because the company isn’t spending to develop the asset. Some of Chevron’s most productive wells are coming online in the Delaware Basin of West Texas and southeastern New Mexico. Chevron expects to get a healthy bump in U.S. shale production through its $53 billion acquisition of Hess Corp., one of the largest producers in the Bakken Shale of North Dakota. Hess’ Bakken output averaged 190,000 boe/d during the first quarter, up from 163,000 boe/d year-over-year. But Chevron’s massive acquisition of Hess is less about the Bakken and more about Hess’ ownership interests offshore Guyanathe world’s newest and hottest oil discovery. However, the outlook for Chevron closing its acquisition of Hess has been muddied by rival Exxon and the ensuing legal and regulatory red tape.

More Smokin’ Hot Deals to Be Had in the Lone Star State  Reese Energy Consulting today is following the latest buzz from the nation’s largest oil-producing state where the Texas horse trading continues among midstreamers and Eagle Ford producers. First up is Houston-based Phillips 66 (PSX), which operates a midstream powerhouse with 72,000 miles of crude oil, natural gas, and NGL pipelines, along with fractionation and gas processing—all of which serve its diverse business segment to include chemicals and refining. After a years’ long JV courtship, PSX last year acquired DCP Midstream for $3.8 billion to further beef up its NGL business following record fractionated volumes and growing export demand. The company will now add even more meat to its NGL bones in the Permian Midland with the pick-up of Pinnacle Midstream II LLC for $550 million. The deal includes the Dos Pico processing complex with 220 MMCFD of capacity, ample space for a second 220 MMCFD gas plant, and 80 miles of pipeline. In short order Houston-based WildFire Energy LLC has shrewdly executed its pure-play South Texas strategy to create the largest consolidated acreage position in the Eagle Ford. The company has now landed its fourth acquisition in three years, this time in a deal with Apache Corporation. The price was not disclosed but wraps up Apache’s non-core asset sale that fetched a total $750 million. Wildfire will gain 237,000 net acres, 11 MBOED, and interests in 465 wells. Pro forma, the company will operate 850,000 net acres, 50 MBOED, and more than 2,000 gross wells. What do you think?
