Firebase vs. Supabase: Why I ditched Firebase and moved my backend to Supabase I’m currently building a production-level app with Supabase, I was initially skeptical about moving away from Firebase, but my client's main requirement was to avoid using Firebase due to its cost and the risk of becoming too dependent on the Google ecosystem. Once you get dependent on it, there is no going back, So we decided to use Supabase and the experience has been phenomenal! Supabase offers everything I love about Firebase but with the added benefits of SQL. The migration process was straightforward, and now I have more flexibility and control over my backend. The real-time features and seamless authentication make it perfect for my projects. Additionally, the ability to write complex queries and use familiar SQL tools has significantly improved our data management. The performance improvements and scalability options have also been impressive. Supabase’s detailed documentation and active community support have made the transition smooth and enjoyable Have you used Supabase before? If yes, what was your experience?

I successfully migrated the database for the Task Manager app from Neon to Supabase. In as much as Supabase gives me an endpoint, I believe it's best to have full control over the logic. After all, I only needed a Postgres instance with better DX, and not a backend. 😉 This is why I still have the backend written in Nest.js. Neon rocks for providing a free Postgres instance to everyone, but Supabase, from my experience, is more fun to work with as it's possible to delete records with a checkbox. I have been getting asked more about how to land work as a software engineer. This amazes me, so I would like to clarify a few things to my recent followers and connections. I don't consider myself a software engineer. I currently work part-time as a lead frontend software engineer at a stealth startup, but if I'm being honest, I consider myself a frontend software engineer, not a software engineer. Sounds silly, right? If I were a competent and accomplished backend software engineer also, I wouldn't call myself a frontend and backend software engineer, lol. No, I would probably be considered a full-stack developer, or just... a software engineer. So with that logic, I don't consider myself knowing half of what many software engineers know. I haven't worked in Java, or C#. I have rarely touched a database correctly, but even when I have, I haven't needed to connect it to a bunch of things other than with JavaScript. I haven't used DevOp tools, have never set up a CI/CD pipeline. My closest weekly interactions with server-side responsibilities is letting the backend engineer know what CORS errors I get in the console, git terminal (but not for server lol), etc. I have 5+ months experience as a LFSWE in preseed. Prior to this, I netted 2 years experience as a Junior Frontend Web Developer. I still feel like I am a junior, though some seniors have been kind enough to assess me and have said that I am probably at the (Junior + Mid) / 2 level. I know a lot more than I used to, and I know a lot more about what I don't know. But there is still so much that I don't know. I live in Northern Massachusetts, USA. My first role was a Support Analyst turned JFWD during the pandemic. My interview was 1 part personality and 1 part recovering from a failed SQL whiteboard challenge. I asked the right questions and showed that I was listening, could learn, and was making an effort to understand even though I had just shown that I lacked understanding. I gave an example that showed I learned the concept on the fly. Communication skills matter! In my second interview I was asked "how to create a navbar." I answered with flexbox, then rambled about sticky depending on whether it was supposed to be or not. As it turns out, the lead developer was about to follow up with how to stick a navbar, so I answered his second question before he asked it. I got my third job from posting a lot on LinkedIn. I am not the person you should go to about DSA interviews, though I have improved slightly with those. I am not well versed in performance. Rather, I am only somewhat aware that with regards to React, you want to be mindful of your re-render triggers, and with regards to JavaScript, you want to be mindful of your iterations and http requests. With CSS, your animations (and overall UX). With HTML, your accessibility (and overall UX). You can disagree with me if you like! Overall, I pride myself in my writing abilities. That has helped me in my career also.

In the world of frontend development, there's always more than one way to build something! This week, I explored a new approach to building a NextJS app with Supabase for a simple time log project. I tried Zustand for state management and experimented with Tailwind and ShadCN for styling, venturing outside my usual use of SCSS. This project helped me solidify the importance of exploring alternatives in our toolset. The time log app allows users to track their work hours and tasks, promoting consistency - the key to showing up and getting things done! The tutorial presented a different data structure for the time log, sparking curiosity about various approaches. While I've been honing my elevator pitch for the "app platform" we've been building, the pitch still sucked. Until now! The killer apps we've just announced sell the platform better than I could ever do. Look at these two: LandingAI is Andrew Ng's startup. Their Snowflake app simplifies the creation and deployment of computer vision AI projects ranging from automated quality control in manufacturing to healthcare. RelationalAI's app layers knowledge graphs on top of relational data. It comes with graph algorithms e.g. to detect communities in social graphs or predicting links and path. I hope it gets a sense of the power of the platform and the trust Landing.ai and Relational.ai have in it. (links below in comments)

Almost all SaaS companies will scam you in one way or another. To avoid this always use a virtual card with a limit set on it and note then down the start & renewal of the subscription in the calendar.

Migrate all my personal website to using Appwrite *there is a few bugs, last year my tech stack for SSR back end is Supabase + Prisma. 今週私のWebサイト変わります。デザインを作りました。 I want to try something new and realize Appwrite is free I believe for this year for hobbyist. There are a few animation I made in Rive, a few of them still on design and animating process, I still figuring out how to control their state and input, will update the design and other things as soon as possible. If your service/company low - medium I recommended to check Appwrite service. I don't know what to try now, should I go to back end with Elysia js with their bun runtime? or should I try Framer? "Selfies" are for teenage girls to post to TikTok. The idea that a "selfie" is suitable for securing money is foolish and foolhardy. The concept of "securing" payments by tying them to an identity is fundamentally flawed, especially where blockchain-based payments are concerned as two entities may not even be human. Two entities do not need to verify with a third to pay in cash. Two entities do not need to verify with a third to transfer value between non-custodial wallets. But, people have allowed themselves to be conditioned to give up freedom of commerce and their right to privacy for some kind of misguided claim of "safety". Stop placating to this flawed "security" practice. Question your financial institution when they want to "verify" you. Use cash. Use cryptocurrency.

Building a product: A lesson from those who nailed it. Attending yesterday's Supabase Open Source Meetup SF, inspired me to dive deeper into the companies behind the event. This led me to a 2021 blog post by Supabase - Ant Wilson detailing their launch process. And Here some key lessons from their approach: - **Deadlines with Flexibility**: Set firm timelines but stay flexible with goals. - **Community Involvement**: Treat users as partners for valuable feedback. - **Iterative Development**: Launch early, improve continuously. If generative AI turns out to be a force multiplier for developers, then one of two things will happen: 1) Corporations will maintain full staffs and use generative AI productivity gains to accomplish more work, faster. 2) Corporations will cut less productive staff and expect generative AI systems to make up the difference. So. Knowing US and multinational corporations as we all do, which scenario would you expect to play out. Get more done? Or improve the bottom line? One might keep in mind how events recently played out at Twitter...
