Well done to uAvionix Corporation and Viasat for teaming up to make a multi-mode data link for drone operations beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). The link uses a DO-377A complaint link manager to seamlessly switch between Viasat's L-band SATCOM (INMARSAT), C-band SATCOM, or cell phone (LTE and ISM). This allows BVLOS drones to use a cellular link in urban areas and automatically switch to SATCOM when out of cellular range. Now all we need are BVLOS rules . . .#drones #uas

Amazon's Imminent Project Kuiper Challenge to Starlink & Other LEOs Amazon will soon be putting up its 3,236 LEO (low earth orbit) satellite constellation. By mid-2026 half the constellation is scheduled to be up and running. Its satellites are engineered to provide have much higher individual link transmission rates than their Starlink counterparts. For example, consumer speeds will be 400 megabits per second between the receiver dish and the earth station. Business and governments can get one gigabit links. Not only will Kuiper offer higher 'last mile' speeds than Starlink, but it also use narrow beam free space lasers to reach customers on islands or moving targets like ships. Kuiper is a credible challenge to Starlink despite the latter's head start because it enjoys lower customer acquisition costs. Starlink must acquire each customer from scratch, but Kuiper's parent company, Amazon, has a huge existing household customer base via its retail online division and a huge corporate customer base via its cloud business. This is a huge advantage because the marketing and sales acquisition costs are much lower. What killed American local competitive carriers during the dotcom era were the high customer acquisitions costs. They were competing against incumbent local carriers that had the entire captive market and could market and sell to the existing customers at low cost. Hence I expect Kuiper to rapidly gain customers and enjoy a low ratio of overhead costs (including sales and marketing expenses) to revenue. Kuiper will be the first satellite service provider that does not face the build it and they will come problem. Furthermore, Amazon has mastered online sales and is extremely efficient in acquiring customers and providing customer service. Moreover, it is estimated that Amazon has roughly a third of the global cloud business measured in terms of revenue. All those large corporations would be excellent targets for satellite for remote locations including rural areas without fibre optics, ships, islands, and other remote locations. In addition, satellite could be used as backup to landline connections. Maybe some day data centers in outer space. 😀 Kuiper has another major advantage over the rest of the industry. It can leverage Amazon's huge terrestrial network that is used for its retail online division, the Cloud subsidiary, and Prime Video broadcasting. Building a global network is hard and Amazon already has a high capacity backbone consisting of submarine fibre pairs, wavelengths, and a terrestrial network consisting of long haul lit and dark fibre capacity, lit metro dark fibre, and hyperscale data centers. Building a big network that is empty from day one and burns a lot of cash to run is not an easy road to travel. #leo #amazon #competition

Are Industry Predictions on Small Cell Rollouts Overstated? Let's Dig Deeper. I find the articles from organizations like the Greater Washington Board of Trade advocating for easier small cell regulations at municipalities quite fascinating. It's hardly surprising that these views are supported by their members, which include major players like AT&T, Comcast, Crown Castle, and Verizon. Moreover, they continue to quote estimates from industry trade groups—estimates that are now six years old—claiming that 800,000 small cells will be "needed nationwide by 2026 to meet the growing demand for wireless broadband." However, if the need for small cells is as pressing as suggested, why have carriers significantly reduced the development of small cells over the past two years, opting instead to upgrade macro cell sites? Clearly, while the need for more small cells is undeniable, the reality of reaching 800,000 by 2026 might be a stretch unless we start counting 4G and 5G nodes separately, including DAS and indoor systems. DroneLife June 10th: GAO Report: Remote ID Not Living Up to Potential https://lnkd.in/dTeD6CpD The RID is an attempt to install an RF/net licensing plate onboard drone.  Imagin a new invention: a revolutionary car that costs less than 20% of an average car and its operating cost is just a fraction of car’s, and its typical pollution is less than 5% of a small car.  Great, isn’t it?   Well, the new car is invisible! Now what? The NRC (New Revolutionary Car) owners suggested that the NRC will give way to all other cars. Not accepted.  No one agrees to share the road at night with a car without lights… The only way to make the NRC visible is by adding a small, inexpensive, chip on every car’s windshield to virtually display the NRC. Now what? Will all drivers agree? Will the regulator enforce all roads users to install the chip? Aren’t drones much like the NRC? What does it take to allow vast usage of that life changing technology?  Requiring all airspace users to transmit their locations and receive their neighbor’s locations via a V2V short latency radio network. Once all air space participants broadcast their locations via a V2V radio network, the full impact of the drones’ industry on society will be applied: Taking significant load of the roads: Less traffic jams Less pollution Time saving for roads users Improved safety / health services: Firefighters Police Healthcare Better jobs: less drivers (Cars, motorcycles, bikes) more drones related jobs There are some challenges, true, but doesn’t the benefit for society justify the effort? With Ciconia’s C&CAS (Coordination and Collision Avoidance System) onboard aerial vehicles, all could safely share the skies: swarms of delivery drones, inspection and monitoring drones, first responders’ drones, helicopters and fixed wings. All can operate together at the same time and place.

IoT. DERs. Ai. And a river runs through it. The Delaware River to be exact. So, a little closer to home, a friend of mine from Startup Bucks asked me why I am fixated on RIoT - Internet of Things. The answer was simple. And pithy. Right here in Bucks County PA we have a serial entrepreneur, at the cutting edge of, well, whatever is the cutting edge in telecom. His name? Barclay Knapp famously. Most recently of Iota Communications, Inc. fka M2M Spectrum Networks. Right here in the Heart of Bucks (as natives call it) that built spectrum and Link Labs (no, not Sidewalk Labs (Part of Google)) technology into a durable brand at SolBright Energy Solutions and Iota Communications, Inc.. IoT meets solar. Ahead of its time. (We worked with Link Labs to build practical use cases for in building benchmarking, but that is another story.) Anyway, I keep asking: Why, here in the Philadelphia 'burbs of Bucks County, don't we at Startup Bucks, Ben Franklin Technology Partners and Bucks County Community College don't leverage minds, capital and success like this to build a similar accelerator environment? https://lnkd.in/ePanDKGA
