💪 Vigilante Justice: A Milwaukee Community Takes a Stand Against Inaction Four years ago, a Milwaukee community took matters into their own hands when they felt the police didn’t acknowledge their complaints about a "Known Sex Trafficking Hub." Community members had been tipping off police and local authorities for years about this property, believed to be a hub for young girls coerced into prostitution and runaways forced into sex trafficking. The breaking point came when two girls went missing, and it was rumored that the owners of this home had been trying to coerce them into trafficking activities before their disappearance. Frustrated family members rallied the neighborhood, deciding to take action themselves. They showed up in force, breaking into the homes associated with the property and vandalizing the cars on the premises. Why would the community resort to such extreme measures? As they noted, there was no Amber Alert for the young women, and they felt police officers had brushed them off for years, despite numerous reports and tips about children being lured to this location and exploited. The property owners had never been investigated or charged and even taunted community members about not getting caught. When minorities are overlooked, and their children are at stake, angered parents will take matters into their own hands. They become their own warriors, feeling the need to ostracize those in the community who violate the safety of their children. But why must it take such extreme measures in minority communities to save children from exploitation? Why are minority children higher in statistics for exploitation and trafficking, but there are no sound policies in place to protect them? Why do mechanisms such as safety or missing child alerts often fail to serve these communities? How do we rectify this without it becoming a racially charged conversation? These are pressing questions that demand answers. It's time to ensure every child, regardless of their background, is protected and valued equally. Let's push for change and accountability. Instead of blinding applying to companies Ask for as many informationals as possible Meaning, reach out to alumni, your friends parents, neighbors, other adults in your life And ask them: -> What do you do day to day? -> Is this a great place to start my career? -> What skills are required for these roles? -> What are career trajectories at this company? -> How do I apply what I've learned to the role I want? -> What can I do to advance my skills and prepare for a role there? And do not end the conversation without knowing: 1. What other people in their network you can speak with about roles 2. What (if any) are next steps to pursue a role at your company Remember to stay active AND persistent in your job search.

Honored to have the opportunity to speak with the Detroit Free Press about the recent Deepfake legislation passed by the Michigan state legislature. Drawing from my research on image-based abuse on social media platforms, I believe these laws are crucial for addressing such issues. They empower both victims and law enforcement agencies to take necessary actions. However, now is the time for lawmakers to collaborate with researchers and practitioners in this field to understand the depth of the problem and devise these legislations accordingly. Here are some tweaks I'd suggest: 🔎 Precision and Specificity: These bills cannot afford to be open-ended or vague. They need to be precise and specific to ensure clear enforcement and protection for victims. Perpetrators in this domain are often more tech-savvy and knowledgeable about legal workarounds than the victims. Ambiguities in the legislation can provide loopholes for exploitation. 🛫 Cross-Boundary Consistency: Since this form of crime knows no boundaries and state laws typically lack power beyond state borders, it's essential to ensure consistent protection across the nation and internationally. These laws must address cross-boundary issues to offer comprehensive protection. ⚖ Incorporating Restorative Justice: We need to move beyond purely punitive measures like criminalization and work towards incorporating restorative justice models alongside punitive actions in these legislations. How many career decisions have you made without really realizing their implications? Looking back, I can think of tons. I started college thinking I wanted to major in Environmental Science, but then switched to International Studies, then added an Economics major, then added a Chinese major. I graduated from UW-Milwaukee still not knowing what I wanted to do. My first full time job after college was a customer service rep in a phone center. I hated it, so I applied to the Hopkins-Nanjing Center, and found a job as a copywriter in the small town of Changsha (population 8M+). I put my all into applying for a Boren Fellowship, and was thrilled to reduce my out-of pocket tuition cost, so of course I left Anker Innovations LTD for Nanjing. In Nanjing I got back into education, teaching economics, history, and academic writing to brilliant middle and high school students. I decided to stay in Nanjing and helped build a new international program (国际部）from scratch at a school in north of the city. After a couple years of being a teacher, I was ready for a change, so I moved to Shanghai for a project manager job, but after a few short months, I was missing working with students and families, so I started working at an admissions consultancy. After a year of COVID that company was struggling, the owner found an excuse to let me go and sold it for pennies on the dollar. That was a low point for me as I had little savings and was scrambling to find a job to put food on the table. Luckily, a recruiter found a great position for me at a school in Shanghai as a university guidance counselor. Two years later I was ready to move on, start my own education consulting business and start an MBA at China Europe International Business School (CEIBS). I didn't realize getting my Master's of Arts in International Studies (They've now rebranded to Int'l Relations) from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) would open up so many doors. That interdisciplinary education and the lifelong friends I made has been like rocket fuel for me as I build my business. My short stint as a project manager actually helped me build the leadership and management skills that I would later leverage as an administrator and College counsellor at a school. Now almost a year into my MBA, I have more clarity than ever about my future career. I started Journey Far to bridge the gap between the US and China. Rejection from grad school doesn't mean you're not good enough. It means you need a better plan. How to turn a "nope" into a "hell yes" from your dream grad program. 1. Reflect on your application Rejection sucks. But take it as a learning opportunity. Check your application. Could your proposal be clearer? Do you have a statement of purpose? Why are you the best fit for the program to which you're applying? 2. Seek feedback Contact the universities that rejected your application if possible. Politely ask for feedback. Not all institutions will do this. Some might, though. If they do, you get invaluable insights to improve the application. 3. Find a mentor If you don't have one already, get one. Someone who can provide advice in your field. Maybe a professor you've worked with. Maybe an advanced grad student in your area. Get tips about what admissions committees want. 4. Improve your CV Sometimes, your CV might not be strong enough. Improve it. Add: • Any forms of academic involvement • Relevant work experience • Research experience • Conferences • Publications Volunteer if you must, but get what's missing from your CV. 5. Re-evaluate your choice of institutions The programs you're applying to must fit your research interests. If you keep getting rejections, though: 1. Widen your search 2. I'm so grateful for Cardinal Health's investment in me and my colleagues through Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Respond) training. So when I saw this Harvard Business Review article, I knew I needed to read through it. Christina and Jeffrey start the article by asking if you would address a colleague when you noticed they were stressed. As they share, "dealing thoughtfully with employees' negative emotions is a critical yet difficult leadership skill." In order for employees to feel comfortable and even safe enough to bring 100% of themselves to work, they are naturally going to have days when they are at their best and others when they are struggling. The article first shared three common misconceptions: 1. Discussing emotions at work is unprofessional. 2. Getting involved in personal matters is too perilous. 3. People who share their emotions want you to solve their problems. It shares a great framework to help a leader determine how best to respond to an employee's emotion. Using empathic wording to acknowledge is such a powerful first step which then allows for a next-step response that best fits the situation. It comes to end by sharing ways we can best build our skills and how critical it is to be self aware: ** Identify our default behavior. ** Pay attention to others' and our own reactions. ** Expand your repertoire. I'm still a work of progress in this area, and have to work so hard to keep my questions simple, to avoid over-inserting myself into a situation, and to minimize the amount of times I share my own stories to relate to someone's emotion. A Deeper Dive on Michigan's 2024-25 School Aid Fund Budget In a recent post I offered some highlights on what I am seeing from the official 2024-25 School Aid Fund (SAF) budget that Michigan uses to fund K-12 schools: - The state expects 2025 student enrollment to drop by 0.5%, to reach 1,385,000. That is a whopping 20% drop since 2003. Brutal losses for local districts. - Total SAF aid will drop 3.8% (or about $800 million) from 2024 to 2025. Quick math: school funding rate is falling 8x the student loss rate. - The state froze 2024 per pupil funding amounts into 2025. This means, since districts are losing student enrollment and thus funding (and losing Federal funding), almost all schools will have less money to spend in 2025. - In a dastardly quirk, the loss of student enrollment which is so painful for local districts actually translates to a savings to the state level budget (since they have to pay out LESS per pupil funding). 2025 Michigan student population loss will save the state $267 million, a cost now that must be borne by the local districts (who are NOT getting any higher per pupil funding). - The state's 2025 budget cut a whopping $2.4 billion in what it calls "one-time expenditures". Almost all of this translates to districts losing ESSERS (Federal) pass through funds. This adds to the misery index. - Some may have heard the noise about the state spending money (about $630 million) that was earmarked for school employee retirement funds. While this is true, the fanfare has been less pronounced that elsewhere the state INCREASED its spending on state employee retirement by $444 million. Summary: 1. This will be a TOUGH budget year for early every Michigan school district. Expect to see LOTS of annual deficit spending everywhere. 2. District's that stockpiled Federal / ESSERS funds will turn to that in 2025, but anything funding directly by ESSERS will be bound to fall away soon. 3. The public school state employee retirement beast continues its ravaging of state and local school budgets. The state is now about half-way through paying down its unfunded employee pension debt. I don't see this getting a whole lot better anytime soon. Until the state finally concludes the retirement debt (anticipated to be around 2038) this will be a hard slog for Michigan K12 schools. I’m on the job hunt. It’s not that I don’t have a job right now, but finding a good-paying one in this field is tough, even with a degree. People often say there are many career options in psychology. As a recent graduate, my choices include: 1. Starting as a psychotherapist under supervision: This option doesn’t pay well, and I might even have to pay the supervisor.     2. Starting a social media page for potential clients: This ties into giving psychotherapy, but let’s be honest, it’s hard to start right after finishing a master's.     3. Becoming a research assistant: It’s tough to get these positions, and the pay isn’t great. 4. Working in a corporate job: This often involves tasks that don’t directly relate to psychology. I’ve interviewed with several corporate organizations and startups. They all wanted someone to use psychology to boost sales, handle marketing, create content, or promote services/products at events. The work seemed more like what someone with an MBA would do. I found the work interesting, but the pay was disappointing. Through this whole process, I realized something important: we don’t have standard job roles in the industry like other professions. This is both a disadvantage and an advantage. The downside is that it’s hard to find your place in the professional world. The upside is that we, as psychology students, have the opportunity to create our own job titles and paths. We can make unique roles for ourselves and grow from there. So, while the whole psychology world is challenging, it’s also exciting. We have the chance to innovate and shape our careers in ways that other fields might not allow.
