Your supply chain teams don’t have data access problems, they have a lack of automation. This blog from a few months ago showed up on my feed again, and I was happy to see it, as it’s the perfect anti-thesis to what we do. IBM: “How Generative AI is Revolutionizing Supply Chain” https://lnkd.in/ereDtsGR >> “Let’s get one thing clear right from the start: generative AI is unlike any technology we’ve ever seen before in supply chain. It’s a game changer. Do not be tempted to discount generative AI as another Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Blockchain or other “hype cycle” technology. Over the next five years, generative AI will fundamentally change the way we work in supply chain.” Oh … um, ok. How is gen AI revolutionizing supply chain in their view? By empowering end users to … poke an LLM with the same prompts over and over again, to try and coax out the information they need to drive their pile of manual day-to-day decisions and tasks. >> “Our supply chain digital assistant allows users to interact with data conversationally to interrogate vast transaction data, such as hundreds of thousands of documents and visual images. Users can go from getting an overall picture of the health of the supply chain to understanding a specific transaction by just asking.” I’m not saying that a properly tuned LLM can’t perform as advertised here. The question is: what’s actually gained? Avoiding the buildout and maintenance of dashboards? Reinventing BI just because? Hardly revolutionary. This post – and just about everything else touting gen AI in supply chain – takes a narrative leap that we can’t continue glossing over. Somehow we jump from being able to ask questions to access and summarize data, to being able to perform repetitive tasks without direction or intervention. >> “Ingesting high volumes of data at speed and contextualizing them to each persona is a given. The “machine” learns, thinks and executes repetitive tasks while allowing supply chain professionals to focus on high impact business events.” And it’s left at that. How we get from fancy natural language filtering of data, to fully self-thinking self-directed systems is left to the imagination. Because it’s imaginary. Novel means of enabling access to data is a bandage to problems at best when it doesn’t at all reduce operational overhead. At-scale supply chains move forward from here through software automation, built with intention, and – yes – with CODE.
