New NTIA Listen for Life Charter Launches to Safeguard Workforce and Consumer Hearing Half (50%) of regular gig goers think that loud music has damaged their hearing, a figure that climbs to an astonishing 92% for those who work in venues, a new poll reveals. It comes as a new Night Time Economy Charter launches to help music venues better look after the hearing health of colleagues and customers.   The charter, developed by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), the trade body which represents the UK’s clubs, bars and pubs, is only one element of the NTIA’s Listen For Life Campaign. The charter sets out a 10-point-plan for businesses, which is in accordance with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Global Standard on Safe Listening Venues and Events. Partnering with Specsavers, the NTIA has launched this charter as part of a new report called ‘It’s time to talk about hearing’, saying it’s worrying how common hearing loss and tinnitus are for those working in the night time industries.   Mike Kill, CEO of the NTIA, says: “We want those who enjoy going to festivals, gigs, pubs, bars and clubs to be able to enjoy them without damaging their hearing – and for those who work in loud environments to be given the knowledge and tools to take care of themselves. This charter can play a massive part in doing that.”   The charter is being backed by DJ’s Nicky Blackmarket – who lives with hearing loss and Woody Cook – who suffers from tinnitus, as well as music legend Lulu who has recently been diagnosed with moderate hearing loss.   The new poll, commissioned by Specsavers, found that 42% have noticed a negative impact on their hearing immediately after a gig – with 58% experiencing ringing in their ears, 45% buzzing and 35% a muffled sensation. Nearly a quarter (23%) said they had suffered temporary hearing loss, while over one in five (22%) experienced pain in their ears.   Despite this, nearly half (46%) of those planning to attend a live music event this summer are unlikely to wear hearing protection. Of these, 44% said they avoid ear plugs because they wouldn’t be able to enjoy the experience as much, and over a third (36%) thought they would alter the quality of the music, which is not the case.   According to Specsavers, it is not uncommon for sound levels at live music events to reach between 115 and 120 decibels (dB) – which could damage hearing if exposed to it for long enough without hearing protection. The survey found over three-quarters (76%) of people didn’t know that the volume of sound was that high.   In a second poll of those working in venues with loud music, 92% have experienced a negative impact on their hearing, with a third reporting tinnitus (34%) or hearing loss (31%). Nearly a third (32%) rarely or never wear hearing protection at work – with over half (53%) saying that’s because their employer has not provided them with it. What We Heard @ eTourism Summit 2024 by Matt Zornes, Director of Sales Development The annual eTourism Summit 2024 was in Las Vegas recently, and I was fortunate to attend along with hundreds of travel and tourism professionals including DMOs, state and regional travel associations, attractions, cruise lines, airlines and hotels, tour operators and marketers and advertising agencies. This was an opportunity to network and gain a deeper understanding of the forces at play as the travel and tourism industry continues to recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The bright spot is travel is predicted to reach 98 percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2024 with a full recovery expected in 2025. Most of the DMOs at the summit are looking for more ways to boost visits. Interestingly, about 20 percent in attendance are dealing with the phenomenon of “over tourism,” the situation when too many people visit a place all at one time, and the locale is spoiled, making it difficult for tourists and those who live there. “Travel is sexy again” was a common theme along with lots of talk about shoulder season – the low points on either side of seasonal peaks. Think about the days or weeks before and after Spring Break and holidays. The general sentiment is destinations need to try and segment their audience in new ways and push them to come in the right before or after peak season. There was significant discussion around cookie deprecation and the methods for acquiring or using first-party data to counteract the gap. The main ideas for acquiring first-party data were giveaways, in-person activations (including welcome centers and travel kiosks that capture travelers) and paid digital lead-generation. The key was to not sit on the data that DMOs and others in the industry already collect. CTV/OTT and YouTube are becoming havens for both broad reach and niche content, and perfect for an industry where video and sound demonstrate attractions and events. These are a just a few of the many topics that also included conversion metrics, TikTok and other social media platforms, the most-prolific travelers (Millennials, and how to reach them and keep them engaged), and the challenges of performance measures with legacy media. I have seen tremendous changes in the Live Event Industry in the past 30 years. Here are a few areas I expect to see continued changes in the coming years. (random order) 1. Technology. Obviously an area with many facets. Marketing, Ticketing, Safety, the areas where technology will impact live events is endless. My advice, embrace it, do not try to continue with the "old way". You can't stop it. 2. Event Production. The audience is always looking for something new, something they haven't seen before, and something that improves the experience. Stages will improve, the audience will become an ever bigger part of the show, and artist/fan interaction will become close than ever. 3. Audience options and experience. People want options and to make their own decisions. People will pay for what they want. I think audience experiences will become ever more customizable. It's already happening. Do you just want to get into the event? OK, here you go. Do you want to get into the event and.......? you name it, you're going to be able to do it. There will be almost no limits to the options, just a matter of paying the price. 4. Even more diverse entertainment options. As the internet has made so many things simply a click of the button, it allows for the consumer to have broader tastes in music and entertainment. What was once considered a "niche" may still fly under the radar for the general public, but it will develop vast audiences almost unnoticed by others. "Niche" entertainment will fill arenas and be a business worth billions. 5. Logistics. One of the things that holds people back from participating is the fear of the "hassle" of certain logistics. Traffic and Parking, restrooms, dining options, security etc. These things will all improve with time and there will be less of a barrier to people being part of the events. 6. Food and Beverage. More money is spent on food and beverage than any sport or entertainment option. Everyone eats, and everyone loves great F&B options. The opportunities to be creative, provide options, and generate additional revenue are endless. We've seen this grow immensely already, and it is just beginning. When I got into this business I was told "basically event event in human history is just an excuse to sell beer." Turns out, it's true, but it is become far more sophisticated and prolific. Obviously, I've left out a ton of obvious areas here as well. Ticketing, Social Media and Marketing to name a couple. Simply too much ground to cover in a Saturday post. :-) I feel like I am missing even more areas than I am covering. It's going to be fun watching what is coming down the road. I'm going to share some Cheat Codes (you may not like them) for having a career in the Live Event Industry. These will work if you stick with them, but it's like going to the gym, it takes time and dedication to make progress. They are not difficult, or complicated, but they do require discipline and patience. If you are willing to do the work, you will succeed. Ready, set, go! 1. Keep showing up. You'll beat 80% of the competition by simply continuing to show up over time. This isn't easy, they will fade away and you will endure and overcome. 2. Accept that you are going to have to put in the work to see the results. Stop looking for that shortcut, it's a lie. 3. Don't believe the doubters and naysayers. Listen to them, use it as fuel. Nothing better than proving them wrong, but never believe them. 4. Decide that you are going to do it, whatever it may be and then go put in the work. Don't try to do it, make the decision that you ARE going to do it and then put in the work. Never stop moving toward that goal. 5. Learn and accept that the journey, the work, the path you are on IS the reward. Don't set your sights on some dream destination, it's the path that is worth taking. 6. Don't try to do this alone. Make friends and allies, it is far more rewarding, and more importantly, you're going to learn from them. You don't and never will know it all. You're going to need them, they will make you better (and you can help make them better as well). 7. Realize that who you are, your character, your willpower, your dedication, is your best asset. Honesty and hard work will always (maybe not right away), win out in the end. Don't get caught up looking for the fast or easy path, those never go anywhere you want to go. 8. Be humble. Even when you make progress and become a leader, and one of the best, there is always someone better. If you become the best in the world at what you do, it is only for a period of time. Enjoy it, but don't be arrogant about it or you will end up alone and it isn't worth it. 9. Set big goals, but put together a plan to get there with small milestones. If you run a mile, and you get one second better a day, you'll make progress a lot quicker than you realize. One Second a day is FAST when you apply it to a year. Usain Bolt trained for years to run the 100 meters, but it was only 9 seconds. He won during his training, not the 9 seconds. 10. Don't quit. The best cheat code there is. If you do not quit you cannot fail. You only fail when you accept it and stop moving forward. Not quitting is tough, really tough, brutal, but it always overcomes. What you feel is impossible today, you will one day look back and think of that as a warm up if you do not quit. You WILL improve. You WILL overcome. Now that you have, share what you have learned and help others. You're going to fail in the Live Event Industry. It's going to be hard, tougher than you expect it will be and I think that is a good thing. Why? because it will make you stronger, you will have to improvise, you will have to adapt and overcome. "A calm sea does not make for a strong sailor." We learn and improve with adversity. Don't shy away from it, embrace it, turn to face it head on. Failure. It's going to happen, but none of us win all the time. Failure is an event and a temporary situation. A person is not a failure. "I have not failed, I have only found 10,000 ways that it won't work." We are better when we face things head on, there is no Armor for your back. Are you being attacked? good, means you're doing something right. No one attacks the people doing things wrong. Don't get me wrong, failure hurts, it sucks, but don't accept it. It is temporary, it is what paves the road to your success. I want you to succeed, I'm telling you truth so you can prepare for it. Sometimes "failure" feels like the end of it all, but it's not. Life continues. Too many people speak what people want to hear and do not tell the truth. The truth is often difficult, but it is true none the less. Your success will not happen quickly, it will take months, years, decades. Why do you think that you see athletes so elated when they win a championship? it's not because what they achieved was easy, it's because it was nearly impossible. They endured the test, they fought through the challenges, overcame obstacles, they failed many times before they won. They know it will not last, tomorrow, the grind starts all over again. When you fail, listen to the haters, and the doubters, remember what they say about you. Now you have fuel. Use it. Grind it out when they are not working. "The only thing you have in common with your competition is time." What are you doing now to make you better than them? how are you building a better mousetrap?"
