📰 Hot off the press! Today CSS released a technical report estimating future #hydrogen demand in Michigan's #hardtoabate #industrial 🏭 and #transportation 🚚 sectors. Examining #petroleumrefining, #chemicals, #pulpandpaper, #steelmaking, #cement, #glass, #semiconductor manufacturing, and medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (#MHDV), the team of researchers estimated potential near- and long-term growth in hydrogen demand, and the associated impact on #GHGemissions. I had an opportunity to speak to the NAATBatt International Battery Recycling Committee today. It was a full agenda with informative presentations by Hayley Hirsh Ph.D., P.E. of Exponent, Tom Evans of Netsch Pumps and Paul-Miki "PM" Akpablie of Sankofa.  We also received an update from Renata Arsenault of Ford Motor Company on the upcoming Lithium Battery Recycling Workshop VII: Closing the Circle to be held in Montreal, Canada, August 7-9, 2024. (See: https://lnkd.in/gAKViE7R) My remarks focused on the topic of secondary market transaction costs.  There is widespread consensus that EV batteries should not be discarded. Rather they should be allocated to their next most valuable use. This can happen in a number of ways: reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and, as a last resort, recycling.  The challenge is that there are a host of transaction costs associated with reverse battery logistics. For example, to maintain a steady flow of batteries a battery remanufacturer must aggregate batteries across multiple sources (car dealers with EV trade-ins, scrap yard or buy salvaged cars from insurance companies by attending insurance auto auctions). There are also various services that must be arranged, such as testing and grading, logistics, storage and insurance. Just finding these services is one form of transaction cost. There is also the cost of bargaining, such as the time spent negotiating price and resources spent on due diligence.  But this is not all. There are also enforcement costs to ensure the terms of agreements are met and resolve any business disputes. A detailed study would be required developed a refined estimate for the transaction costs associated with buying and selling used EV batteries. However, if we assume that these costs tally to $200 per battery through various stages of resale then the transaction costs of associated with managing 18.2 million used batteries in the US over the next 15 year could burden the industry with $3.6 billion in transaction costs. The solution is to establish a digital marketplace. Digital marketplaces significantly reduce transaction costs in sales between buyers and sellers. They reduce search costs, negotiation costs, monitoring, and enforcement costs as well as payment and delivery costs.  Transaction costs cannot be eliminated but they must be tackled to remove unnecessary cost and friction for the EV battery industry to go circular. #circulareconomy #EVbatteries #marketplaces #digitaltransformation #platformstrategy #circularplatforms #reverselogistics McFadyen Digital

Did you know that lithium, a valuable element used in rechargeable batteries, is found in abundance in produced water from Marcellus shale gas operations? “The NETL (National Energy Technology Lab) research suggests that Marcellus Shale production wastewater from the two Pennsylvania regions could meet 38–40% of current domestic lithium consumption. The research shows that Marcellus Shale produced water has the capacity to provide significant lithium yields for the foreseeable future. “HYDROGEN ELECTROLYSER PROJECTS PUSH INFRASTRUCTURE AMID 55 GW SURGE IN 6 MONTHS” April 24, 2024 - “Hydrogen electrolyser projects in development globally total 1.2 TW, with a staggering 55.2 GW of new projects added in the last six months alone, according to Aurora’s global electrolyser database. While Europe remains a hotspot, projects show global momentum.” - “90% of projects are categorised as early stage, while approximately 130–140 GW are advanced-stage developments. The global pipeline for hydrogen electrolyser projects has surged by 55.2 GW in the last six months, now standing at a staggering 1.2 TW according to the latest Q2 2024 European Hydrogen Market Report by Aurora Energy Research. 🔹 Europe leads the charge with 32% of project development capacity, closely followed by Oceania at 21%. 🔹 Notably, Germany takes the lead in electrolyser development within Europe, boasting approximately 9 GW in advanced stages, followed by the Netherlands and the UK. 🔹 A clearer policy framework and support schemes have propelled the advancement of electrolyser projects globally, with new ventures and existing ones securing Final Investment Decisions (FIDs). 🔹 However, while progress is evident, further collaboration remains crucial for meeting national targets and ensuring the successful rollout of a future hydrogen market, as highlighted by Dilara Caglayan, research lead at Aurora Energy Research. 🔹 Looking ahead, Aurora projects that by 2030, Europe's installed electrolyser capacity will reach 35 GW, though falling 76% short of targets outlined by the EC's Net Zero Industry Act and REpowerEU. 🔹 The report also underscores the disparity in hydrogen production costs across European countries, ranging from EUR 4 to EUR 20 per kilogram, with the Nordics and Spain offering the lowest costs. Earlier this week, Green Li-ion, a US-based lithium-ion battery recycling technology company, launched its FOAK commercial-scale installation. The plant will produce battery-grade cathode and anode materials from concentrated components of spent batteries using a novel and advanced hydrometallurgical approach that directly converts recycling scrap into battery-grade precursor cathode active material (pCAM). Currently, the majority of industrial-scale hydrometallurgical recycling plants are located in China, but European and North American players are catching up. SMI is committed to helping turn into reality the nation’s historic plans to domestically produce more clean energy. And we are pleased that client Nel Hydrogen is among those leading the way by producing green hydrogen through the electrolysis of water. The company has been spotlighted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for being selected for a $41 million investment under the Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Credit (48C) that was expanded with $10 billion in tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. "The company has initiated a significant expansion and industrialization of its manufacturing capacity and is preparing for a future site in Plymouth Charter Township, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan,” DoE said on Friday. “When fully developed, the facility will be among the world's largest electrode facilities, where Nel will manufacture its next generation pressurized alkaline and [proton exchange membrane (PEM electrolysis] technologies.” Unlike many of the tax credits under the IRA, the advanced energy project tax credit is allocated on a competitive basis. "And to ensure that money helps smooth the transition in the U.S. to cleaner forms of energy, at least $4 billion of the total must go to communities whose economies were historically dependent on coal,” POLITICO's Kelsey Tamborrino reported. Nevada has a massive lithium deposit that’s vital to batteries and green energy. But a mining giant is squatting on its groundwater rights, blocking out competition. Some observations: • The incumbent is using only a fraction of the water its entitled too, but wants to preserve the rights to help supersize their growth • Competitors want the rights divvied up so they can enter the market. Typically, this would drive up innovation and lower costs • Smaller players in the region are turning to “brine mining.” Instead of going after the big rocks, they frack up a lithium slurry from deep underground • Conservationists are on the alarm: they say the mining giants are overstating how much water is actually available, and they definitely don’t want Texas-style fracking damaging the environment • The state is stuck in the middle, trying to respect rights holders yet drive competition, and pursue economic development without destroying everything around them Rock and a hard place. Today, we announced the opening of the United States’ first-ever commercial-scale sodium-ion battery manufacturing facility in Holland, MI. We are proud to contribute to the fast-growing clean energy sector in Michigan, where our new facility will support more than 100 high-quality jobs.    Our Holland facility is projected to produce 600 MW of sodium-ion batteries annually, serving as a blueprint for future Natron giga-scale facilities. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) recently made much needed updates to pathways for funding the maintenance of and expansion of our nations power grid in order to meet increasing needs. This update is important for many reasons, but here are a few critical excerpts: 1. "This rule cannot come fast enough," FERC Chairman Willie Phillips, who voted for the final rule. "There is an urgent need to act to ensure the reliability and the affordability of our grid." 2. It also asks operators to identify opportunities to modify existing transmission facilities instead of replacing them when needed 3. To meet that target, the country needs to more than double regional transmission capacity  4. the first time the FERC has ever squarely addressed the need for long-term transmission planning US overhauls electric grid to make way for more renewables | Reuters

Utilizing our proprietary dry electrode battery manufacturing process, we have successfully produced lithium battery cells with PFAS-free electrodes at Dragonfly Energy. Concerned about “Forever Chemicals,” also known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), due to their environmental persistence and potential health risks, the European Union (EU) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are proposing restrictions on their use.
