First time funds will raise “unheard of” amounts of capital to fuel next gen deep tech startups - producing outsized, superior returns for LP’s compared to the rest. Prudent investors will act on this data and shift investment strategy as LP’s or risk being left behind savvy wealth managers and CIO’s / FO’s who saw this trend begin 4 years ago.

Is SF Climate Week banter a good barometer of the macro climate tech investment mood? Key nuggets to ponder: 💰💰💰 Climate solutions (like most science/engineering and hardware based deep tech) are capital intensive. They require an "all of the above", creative financing approach to obtain the capital needed to scale (from CVCs, government, public-private partnerships, green banks, debt financing...). 🤖 AI - Everything, Everywhere (all at once). As in most sectors, AI is white hot. It can be a key component of climate solutions, but also a demand accelerant ⏩ More AI = ↗ compute and power demand ⚡= ↗ need for energy storage and grid enhancing solutions 🔋. 🏛 🤵 Political Angst. Real worry that a new administration will cut or impede climate tech catalyzing funding (e.g., DOE funding from IRA). #climatetech #climateweek

Earlier this year, we surveyed our fellow Los Angeles-based GPs to get a pulse check on the LA venture ecosystem. Here’s what we found: 💗 Deal flow is healthy, and most LA venture investors (68%) are seeing the same or more deal flow YoY. ✈ LA investors are spending time in a variety of markets, with NYC, Austin, and SF following closely on LA’s heels. 🔍 Innovation is concentrated in AI and machine learning, space, and commerce. 💸 Funding is happening, but it’s barbell-shaped, with deals concentrated at the early and late stages. Funding post-Series A has been challenging. 🚩 LA is differentiated, but not without its challenges. Key difficulties include not attracting enough AI talent (despite having the largest number of engineers graduating from our region over any other in the United States); talent relocated to more tax-friendly or less expensive locations; and the great SoCal / NoCal divide 🙏 Thank you to all our many respondents! VC funding in healthcare has been more resilient than in other industries. Here are some key takeaways from recent Carta data: 👉 At the priced seed, Series A, and Series B stages, dilution for health startups has noticeably decreased, while dilution for SaaS startups has stayed flat or increased slightly. 👉 In priced seed rounds, median dilution for healthcare companies dipped to 14.2%, compared to 20% for SaaS.  👉 The frequency of bridge rounds surged in the health sector in Q1, jumping to 44.3% from 36.9% in Q4 2023. This is the first significant increase in bridge rounds in healthcare over SaaS since early 2022. 👉 More founder-friendly terms for health startups may result from enduring VC interest since COVID. Healthcare has remained strong through economic turmoil, enabling higher valuations with smaller round sizes. What are the implications? The healthcare sector might see a rise in new ventures due to favorable investment conditions and lower dilution rates. The surge in bridge rounds suggests that certain sectors within healthcare face unique challenges that require interim financing solutions. Prime Coalition has long taken a different tack to climate finance compared to its for-profit brethren. It makes the usual venture-style investments in startups through Azolla Ventures and also helps philanthropists direct their money to climate-related projects that it deems high impact. Trellis Climate follows the latter model with a focus on middle stages, where capital has grown scarce. #climatetech #climateVC #climatefinance

I recently sat down with Michael Batko, CEO at Startmate and Founder of Puddle Pod for Episode 11 of Insane Ambition. Startmate has invested in 230+ startups, much of it under Michael's leadership, and now has $3.5b in value across its portfolio companies. The GLP-1 space has continued to explode, with the potential for impact expanding to cardiovascular risk, sleep apnea, and liver disease. So who are the emerging players poised to challenge Lilly and Novo? The incoming players to watch are a mix of startups and incumbents. In the startup realm, Viking Therapeutics, Inc., and Altimmune, Inc. have gained significant attention as their GLP-1 candidates demonstrate solid weight-loss outcomes. For San Diego based Viking, weekly doses of VK2735 delivered weight loss of up to 13% compared to placebo in a Phase 2 trial. Perhaps most exciting, the weight loss did not plateau at any time during the 13 week study, suggesting longer duration doses would result in further weight loss. Meanwhile, Altimmune's Pemvidutide (being studied for both obesity and MASH) is on track for an end of phase 2 FDA meeting in Q3 of this year. Notably, Pemvidutide has showed promise in limiting the amount of weight loss derived from muscle, which is a notable problem with the existing GLP-1s. A recent phase 2 trial showed only ~25% of weight loss was from lean mass, more in line with the ratio seen in typical diet & exercise programs. There are also several incumbents working hard to establish their presence. Roche's $2.7B acquisition of California-based Carmot Therapeutics, Inc. Therapeutics in December and Amgen's MariTide are both notable. Roche recently announced data from a Phase 1B study for CT-388 showing placebo-adjusted weight loss of ~19%, with 85% of participants seeing weight loss of more than 10%. Not to be left out, Amgen has recently advanced MariTide into Phase 2 studies, with Phase 1 results published in February showing weight loss of up to 15% in 12 weeks, with some dosage levels only required once a month. To have a credible chance at challenging the existing market leaders, new GLP-1s will have to demonstrate meaningful improvements on the following: 1. Dosage - most approved therapies today (with the exception of Rybelsus) are subcutaneous injections, given weekly. Having an easier form (tablet) or frequency (bi-weekly or even monthly) would be a big advantage. 2. Preservation of lean muscle mass - helping patients derive weight gain from regular adipose tissue instead of muscle mass. 3. Benefits beyond weight loss. Novo's recent FDA label expansion for Wegovy for reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events provides a blueprint of how to expand the area these medicines can be helpful in. While there are many companies active in the space, it's worth noting just how large a lead Lilly and Novo have in this future $100B+ market. A recent GlobalData report noted that even by 2029, these two giants will have ~80% of the market between them. That said, 20% of a $100B market is still a sizable prize for other innovators, and continued innovation will only help patients.
