The key to successful visual merchandising training goes beyond the basics. Cannabis retailers don't typically have a team of merchandisers at their beck and call to create strategic and effective displays. So we have to be scrappy and resourceful. Here are two strategies I prioritize in my training with managers: 1. 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: I get them to step into the shoes of their ideal customer. Analyze behaviours and buying patterns to understand what drives interest and purchase decisions. 2. 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀: Sales reports hold a wealth of insights. Think about it: - Who's at fault when promotions get missed? - Why do some promos flop or thrive? - Do your budtenders understand the promotion's goals? - Do they understand who the target customer is? Budtenders have the power to make or break a promotion. Without their enthusiasm and understanding, even the best deals can fall flat. So, what moves the needle? Communication. If your customer experience takes a hit, what’s the first lever you should pull? No… It’s not competitive pricing strategies It’s not add more deals It’s not buy more inventory The lever you should pull is investing in employee training. The way customers shop for everyday items influences how they shop for cannabis. I was buying a new pair of shoes the other day, and the sales associate was helpful, but he didn’t do more than ask how the fit was and walked away. Remember when they would fit check you (the “where’s your toe” evaluation), tell you how great they looked, and give you features and benefits? Customers value the human element, now more than ever. That means budtenders who go above and beyond or offer exceptional service will move the needle. But that takes an investment in training and upskilling your teams beyond product knowledge. It also means hiring for skill. The in-person interaction is a powerful tool. Great websites and deals are bonuses, But nothing beats the impact of a great in-store experience. Sharing on New WM NHM larger layout: Since 1998, Walmart customers have looked to the convenience of Neighborhood Markets to get what they need. A smaller size meets a stellar assortment, creating a store that places the community at its very center. And that’s not changing. In fact, Walmart recently committed to opening or converting more than 150 stores in the next five years – with the Neighborhood Market format set to benefit. Two new stores, one in the Dune Lakes area of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, the other in the Vine City neighborhood of Atlanta, are the first to open under the new initiative. The stores aren’t just new or remodeled. They’re also bigger. With 57,000 square feet of salesfloor and pickup and delivery space, the Dune Lakes and Vine City stores will have a footprint that’s about 17,000 square feet larger than the average Neighborhood Market. Breaking our Crystal Ball!!! So many times in life and business we fail to get the Outcome that we ALL want (our customers and us) because we want to believe what our Crystal Ball tells us! Unfortunately for many people the Crystal Ball tells us the wrong thing. My customer doesn’t want a Healthy Sleep System, my customer doesn’t want Peace of Mind, my customer doesn’t want to buy, my customer doesn’t want me around, my customer wants to look, and so on. These beliefs are standing in the way of too many hard working people getting the results they ALL want because it keeps them from just asking the question or taking the chance to be able really know if their thought is true or false. At Broad River Retail we would rather know, so we Break our Crystal Ball and give the Customer the opportunity to decide for themselves. The Cali class action lab lawsuit is, in part, solely due to the inherent variability of the plant itself. The plaintiffs claim the required testing is inaccurate because no samples are within 1% of the original test. Anyone who manufactures products using cured, tested cannabis (flower copackers and preroll mfgs mostly) - knows that there is a MASSIVE amount of variation from matieral in one corner of a 20lb bag, to material at the top. Anyone who grows cannabis knows that too nugs are drastically different than side nugs, or larf. We have tested two portions of the same bag of cannabis and gotten a delta of 5%+ in THC, and just one of the two samples showed a detectable amount of Nickel. Moreover, both cannabinoids and terpenes rapidly breakdown in most packaging on the market today, especially cheaper glass/PET jars and unsealed mylars. Becuase the same degradation happens with all perishables, food products have nutritional values listed that equal the LOWEST POSSIBLE values a given food may contain at the END OF THE SHELF LIFE. Right now, cannabis products are marked with the highest possible values, based on the BEGINNING of their shelf life. If this same kind of court action moves forward nationwide, and continues to shape our regulatory framework. Say goodbye to inflated testing, but also say goodby to small batches. Say hello to much stricter barrier requirements for packaging. Say hello to modern perishable CPG protocols. At Road Trip, we roll strain specific prerolls in batches ranging from 2,000g to 20,000g. For many consumers, the fact that we deliver strain variety is a big reason they buy our product time and time again. If we had to ensure that every unit tested within 1% of our compliance label, we would have to pre-grind, mix, and rename 50lb batches into homogenized blends. Achieving consistent testing results at scale requires mass homogenization. Period. Greater requirements for homogenization are coming. Prepare yourselves.
