The focus of this study is the poor flotation performance observed for ores containing certain non-sulfide gangue mineral species such as serpentines. The poor flotation behavior is characterized by a reverse C shaped grade-recovery curve. The role of gangue mineral species in this is verified by conducting model system studies in which serpentine mineral content of a sample is varied, and the atypical grade-recovery curves were reproduced. It is further observed that the conventional mechanisms of transport of gangue to the concentrate such as true flotation and entrainment are inadequate and a novel phenomenological model is proposed that appears to explain this better. The insights developed in this study would allow for the development of better processing conditions for such ores.
