Research from Edison Research's "Sports Audio Report" reinforces that Radio and podcasts occupy a major place with the sports fans: 64% of sports fans frequently or occasionally listened to sports audio content with AM/FM radio the most popular consumption channel. These consumers TAKE ACTION: 63% of sports audio listeners have decided to learn more about a company or product after hearing an ad on a sports program or podcast and more than half have bought a product or service after hearing an ad on a sports program or podcast. Gabriel Soto Senior Director of Research at Edison Research shares that 66% of the U.S. population consider themselves sports fans and that enthusiasm is rooted in a shared experience: 68% says following sports brings their families closer together. https://lnkd.in/e7WgX3rx

Launching anything NEW is fun, scary, and mostly scary. I've been in the TV business for 20 years, and I've witnessed our industry go through many changes, some good, most not so good. Streaming technology has given the power to the little guy, or at least that's the perception. The industry term for streaming is called OTT or Over The Top. It implies we can jump over the top of networks and directly distribute our content to viewers. After 20 years of distributing through a network, we launched an OTT channel last April. We are only a few weeks in, and there is a lot we don't know. What I do know is that this is not easy. We are centering our niche channel around one geographical location and seeking subscribers willing to pay for access to our content. The idea is to create a personalized streaming experience that feels familiar. A channel full of original and exciting content curated for an audience invested in a single location. I don't know if I've ever seen an SVOD-formatted channel centered around one location. Who knows if this is possible—that's the scary part, I guess. The fun part is creating beautiful content I'm passionate about, free of sponsor/brand interference, and, as a creator, that spells freedom. So, if we can make the business model work, we can show there's a place for the little guy or girl in our fragmented streaming landscape. This is an interesting article and I agree this is the beginning of the end of legacy MVPD's. Eventually, the media rights owners will figure out they do not need these networks and can go direct to consumer as well. Why dilute their brand and lose the relationship with their community or lose so much of the ad revenue? https://lnkd.in/dkcG9rT2

"In aggregate, this year the industry is putting on more shows, charging more for tickets but getting fewer butts in seats and seeing lower average grosses and still seeing a record setting total gross. " This snippet pretty perfectly illustrates that the business of live entertainment is an art. So many achievements co-exist with the challenges. It's exactly why I think we, the puzzle solvers, have to give a shit about music from either a talent or fan experience perspective to get the wins. I've found those who claim differently to be the players in this world who fizzle out (or fuck up royally at some point...to be frank). Empathy has always narrowed the gaps. Meeting every economic moving part of a live event where it is, where its realities are, gets us to the black in a more consistent way. Makes me wonder a bit...are we spending a balanced amount of time listening as much as we are burying our noses in the numbers? I've definitely never been as creative with spreadsheet cells as I have been with human feedback to close deltas. Numbers simply show us WHO we need to be having the convos with.

5 years ago I provided you with the maturing of cable tv and I just want to remind you that the cost and technology hasn’t changed much: Rabbit ears Out door stick antenna Cable tv Wireless Internet Streaming TV Originally, content on the tv was owned by the creating company Then larger companies started to buy tv channels to create a content packages that were then licensed to cable tv companies to sell to their consumers. Now, the cable companies, have purchased the smaller companies to put on their cable systems. The difference is other cable companies now have to negotiate with their competitors to get content for their cable system. Streaming has become even more complicated as as the larger Companies still own themselves, BUT, the smaller streaming companies have been bought by bigger streaming companies/cable companies and that is now why you are starting to see streaming channel packages with multiple companies contained in the packages. So, residentially the hope of a lower cable tv bill is disappearing. Commercially, the price you will pay is going to go up because certain channels are moving from one package to another. There are several companies that saw the writing on the wall and can deliver individual channels you need plus adding off air tv which is free. 12 years ago I got rid of my cable service which I was paying over $255.00 a month including internet. I installed an outside antenna to receive all the local networks ($0.00). I got separate internet for $39.99 and added the FREE streaming services: Roku, Tubi. Finally I broke done on got a streaming service for $9.99 month.I saved over $150.00 a month and still have all the sports I like So, good luck and feel free to contact me if you need help

SiriusXM reported its Q1 earnings this morning, and the headlines are justifiably focused on its loss of subscribers (nearly 500k). Like all radio, its subscription business is highly vulnerable with the move to digital audio, especially in cars. But a bright spot? If you paid attention to Spotify's earnings, you wouldn't be surprised: "off-platform revenue." For SXM, this includes Pandora and podcast revenue, which saw a 7% revenue increase. During their investor call, they signaled the growth for podcasts, explicitly saying, "Podcasting revenue saw a 22% year-over-year lift in the quarter, while programmatic podcast revenue increased 12% sequentially and 97% year over year." I'd love to see SXM break out the podcast numbers even further, but if you look at what they do provide, it's easy to conclude that podcast revenue is growing much faster than other segments. For example, Pandora continues to bleed users (64k paid subs in Q1 alone), so podcast revenue seems to be the tide lifting all "off-platform" boats. When asked about their podcast initiatives, Scott Greenstein said, "One is, you know, the podcast thing and industry is really still in the second or third inning, so it's evolving." He is 100% right. SXM also signaled that it will continue to license more podcast content and is not closing the book on exclusive content. One more fun nugget: On today's call, podcasts were mentioned 30 times. Pandora was only mentioned ten times, SmartLess nine times, and Howard Stern... zero point zero. If we are needing to have a system sit idle and be on standby onsite, not because of equipment failure but because of connectivity reliability, then what's the point?!
